This is a brainstorming article about the warlock and their powers, its my humble opinion and i want to ask the community about their opinion on my idea
Well i have been playing a warlock for some time now and something always stuck in my mind,if patrons can bestow powers at the warlock, why cant they bestow powers from other classes or creatures ? Example : Lets sey you are a warlock that wants the wizard divination passive (Portent), but he doesnt want to multiclass, what does he do? Well he ask his patron a female fiend is she could grant him this power in exchange of spmething , like 1/4 of his max Hp or 2 points from str or wiz, its up to the DM but what im getting at is that it feels way more organic for the warlock to request power and the patron to request smth in return. Like if a warrior found an amulet of a Faylord and requested one cast of wish spell but had to give a magical item. The point is that warlocks should feel like making a deal , not gaining power like a cleric (with levels ,a reward for bing a faithful follower),but like giving something and gaining something. The price is up to the DM, although the price should be equal or greater than the request. Im not saying make the class all over again but something like an choince that all the people selling their soul/lifeforce should make ,just to spice things up and give everyone with even 1 lv in warlock to roleplay and unlock the powers the wants.I know it can be kind of broken but... hey its DM's job to balance things out. This is just as i said a brainstorm ,and i would like the opinion of all the DMS of players on this. Note english is not my native language.
I could see this being very difficult on the DM, but also a great way to create a plot. However, I think that there should be a limit on the level that they can "steal" from. EX: a 5th level warlock might be able to steal an ability from a first or second level fighter, in return for a constitution score decrease and a quest to fulfill. Until the quest is fulfilled, they have disadvantage on charisma saves.
Ofc , it would ALWAYS be in favor of the Patron, but at the same time you could exchange 1/3 of total helth to cast an extra spell, and after that decrease temporarily int and give 1 lv of fatigue...or smth like that. They only reason i thought of that is so i can get Portent, in combination halfling with lucky feat ,inspiration and dark ones luck, like your char defies fate and changes the destiny of those around him . Ty for the time you dedicated to write a reply :)
Instead of sacrificing HP or the like, it's simpler to exchange subclass features of a higher level. Wild magic made sense for my GOO warlock, so I sacrificed my 6th level subclass feature for the level 1 feature of wild magic sorcerer. I didn't ask my patron for it, it's just the power I got when I leveled up.
Depending on the relationship between warlock and patron, asking for abilities may not be possible. My patron has been sleeping for eons and is not aware of my existence. Other warlocks (particularly fiend) may be directly working against the wishes of their patron. Once the original deal is made, or method of taking power has been discovered, the power is yours until you die permanently, regardless of the patrons opinion of you.
