I haven't posted in here before so let me know if this thread is in the wrong place/format or is breaking any rules.
I'm currently playing a Forest Gnome Artificer (Gunsmith) with a Guild Merchant background and I've come to realise that, in comparison to other class features (especially the UA Beast Conclave Ranger's companion), the Mechanical Servant has no form of scaling to help it being useful in later levels. To fix this, I have revised some points in the feature as well as introducing Upgrades to the Servant to make it a viable investment for the Artificer in later years.
If you have any feedback on this revision let me know. Furthermore, if you wish to playtest it feel free to as I'd love to hear how your experience with it went.
I have considered it as a subclass, like many homebrews online have done but this was just something to give the Servant a bit more purpose after 9th level.
Rather than reworking it into a subclass, I'd work it into wondrous invention. Give the artificer more wondrous invention slots and let them upgrade their servant, rather than selecting an item from the list. I would, however be careful about granting the spell upgrades to the mechanical servant. The vast majority of them would seriously overpower the thing.
Cheers, looking back at this with fresh eyes, I do see the potential of the mechanical servant being a bit OP with the upgrades.
I'll look into assigning the upgrades into the wondrous invention slots as I believe that is a great way to balance the Artificer, but it might be best doing it within a subclass of its own, as a Gunsmith Artificer with Sharpshooter Feat AND an upgraded Mechanical Servant is a strong combo.
I've been editing a rework of the Gunsmith subclass by combining it with elements of the Gunslinger subclass that Matt Mercer made for Critical Role. I also replaced Mechanical servant with a Feature from Unearthed Arcana's, Wizard Artificer subclass. Also came up with some pretty cool features for a mechanical servant subclass. I'm calling it "Golemcrafter". I can send you any and all the stuff if you want to check it out. Love collabing on home-brew materials!

Here is my Mechanical Servant Homebrew (5e)

Interesting. Seems like it could be its own subclass.

I’d consider reworking this as a subclass. It would break the class to have this as well as their regular upgrades as well as their subclass upgrades
I like it.

I'll review it and post up a new version soon.
