Heya all, I want to take a shot at recreating the spell that was published in 3e in the book Lost Empires of Faerun. It's meant to be a very powerful spellduel tool for a high level spellcaster.
Without further ado:
Srinshee's Spell Shift
9th level Abjuration
Casting time: 1 action
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute
Classes: Sorcerer, Wizard
This spell opens your senses to the Weave, allowing you to perceive its very fabric as clearly as you might see the trees in a forest while standing in the heart of it. When a spell is cast, you can visually observe its effects on the Weave.
While the spell is active you have advantage on ability checks using your spellcasting ability for the purposes of Counterspell and Dispel Magic.
Additionally, you can manipulate the base structure of spells cast around you, allowing you to do one of the following effects:
Counterspell: you can use your reaction to counter spells as if casting Counterspellat 3rd level.
Heighten Spell : as a reactionyou can imbue any spell cast within 60 feet of you with additional power, effectively increasing it's level. Doing so expends your own spell slot of level equal to or greater than the newly heightened spell.
Manipulate Spell: whenever a spell is cast within 60 feet of you, you can use your reaction to alter it's target, range or area. You can alter only one of those properties at a time and you cannot increase them beyond what the targeted spell already allows. For instance, you can decrease the range of a Fireball so that it explodes at the caster's feet or you can increase it's range up to 150 feet but not further. Likewise, you can decrease it's area of effect to a 5-foot-radius but you cannot increase it beyond a 20-foot-radius. You cannot change the properties of spells that require or allow concentration.
Trying to manipulate another caster's spell requires an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + level of the spell.
Sever Spell: as an action you can end one spell or magical effect within 60 feet of you as if cast Dispel Magic. Doing so requires an ability check using your spellcasting ability. The DC equals 10 + level of the spell.
Few notes to the spell:
1. Spell is region locked to FR but that can be easily fixed. Just change the name to "Spell Shift" and remove the mentions of "Weave" from description.
2. Changing the target of a spell is tricky since many of those require concentration. The intent is that you can change the target from a spell like Disintegrate or Finger of Death or Power Word but not from spells like Haste, Slow, Polymorph etc. since it would be iffy to resolve who is concentrating on that effect.
3. Balancing issues - I am wondering whether the check for Manipulating spell/Sever Spell should be as is (like Counterspell/Dispel Magic) or rather a spellcasting ability contest between the two casters.
4. I removed some properties from the original spell, like adding other metamagic effects because in 5ed it's a Sorcerer only thing so there is no way to make it universal. Also removed the backlash effect since 5ed doesn't really have a "dazed" condition but "stunned" seems too OP for me.
5. I'm on the fence with Sever Spell. Seems thematically appropriate but also very powerful. On the other hand it costs an action of a 17+ level spellcaster just to end an effect, so...
Sever Spell and Counterspell are basically equivalents of Dispel Magic and Counterspell at will while this spell is in effect but without the possibilty to expend higher slot. In exchange, you can keep dispelling/counterspelling for as long as you can concentrate and you roll with advantage.
