Hi everyone, I'm new to the forums, so please point me in the right direction if I haven't created this thread in the right forum. I'm working on a new system of magic called channeling, and I would love to get some feedback on it before I publish it. If you're interested, please let me know. If it's allowed, I'd be happy to post a link to the material I've developed so far in here.
The reason why I decided to develop this system is because the standard rules for magic allow a spellcaster to ‘go nova’, i.e., they use all of their available spell slots in a single encounter. This might trivialize that particular encounter and render the spellcaster considerably less effective in subsequent encounters until they can take a long rest. Although the second half of the issue can be resolved by strategically managing spell slots, the first half cannot. The warlock offers an interesting approach to spell slots, decreasing the risk of ‘going nova’, but this class relies heavily on short rests to regain its spell slots. However, the flow of the campaign may not always allow the party to take a short rest.
Channeling simplifies magic by removing spell slots and introducing three basic categories of aspects, the channeling system's alternative to spells: focus, minor, and major. A focus aspect grants a passive effect, but characters can only receive the benefit of a single focus aspect at any given time. A minor aspect is the bread and butter of a character’s channeling abilities, and most characters will be able to use these aspects at will. A major aspect is significantly more powerful than a minor aspect, e.g., by allowing characters to target multiple enemies with a single action where minor aspects target a single enemy.
Can you let me know if you would be interested in proofreading or playtesting the material and how I can go about doing that?
