You have spent your life in the service of a temple to a specific god or pantheon of gods. But lately, the specter of question has crept into your thoughts. Is it possible that what you thought were gods are really just extremely powerful mortals? Could all these years of obedience and servitude have been squandered on a selfish, childish, so-called god? You are disappointed, a little embarrassed, and let's be honest, you're angry. Years of wasted zealotry keeps you from proselytizing about your new-found "freedom," but you have found comfort in laughing at the works and evidences of the gods; a little humor helps to ease the bitter pill of truth that you choke on each day.
Choose a god, a pantheon of gods, or some other quasi-divine being, and work with your DM to detail the nature of your previous religious service. The Gods of the Multiverse section contains a sample pantheon, from the Forgotten Realms setting. Were you a lesser functionary in a temple, raised from childhood to assist the priests in the sacred rites? Or were you a high priest who suddenly experienced a crisis of truth once your ecclesiastical station allowed a view behind the curtains ? Perhaps you were just a humble follower who cannot deny the horrors and failings of the world.
The default background grants two skills, two in any combination of tools and languages, a ribbon, and some equipment and gold. Look at the Dissenter from Plane Shift: Amonkhet for inspiration for the ribbon and the Acolyte background for everything else.

I am a new DM and one of my players (a Paladin) wants to question this very thing, to the Gods really exist? I would like a recommendation on an adventure/campaign that deals with this?
Reading above, I will ask them to flesh out the history of how they became a Paladin, followed their religion and what has caused them to question the gods now.
Thanks

I was thinking Insight and Religion based on past service (religion) and newfound knowledge (insight)
just became aware of ribbon abilities and wanted to explore that. Any ideas?
