I don't want to trample on the Metamagic "Heighten Spell". And after reading lots of opinions and feedback on "perhaps not providing an upcast version of a spell was an INTENTIONAL decision", I've decided not to go wild providing upcast benefits to spells that don't already have them. (Although I might spot-homebrew a couple.)
Instead, I want to get your feedback on this tweak:
[RAW] Upcasting a spell that has no upcast feature has one benefit: the spell is higher level. This matters for Counterspell or similar effects, or possible adventure requirements (like "you must cast Remove Curse at 6th level to remove this effect").
Tweak (New Option): "For every 2 levels you upcast a spell, you increase the save DC for that spell by 1. You receive no other benefits/effects, other than that the spell is treated as being cast at the higher level." [This still has no effect on spells that have no DC, such as "buff" spells, or direct attack spells.]
For example, you could cast Fireball at 5th and do 10d6 (8+1/SL), or keep it at 8d6 and increase the DC by 1; either way, it is treated as a 5th level spell. Upcasting Sending, which has no upcast text and no DC, would provide no benefits under this rule.
Other Options:
a) give direct attack spells a +1 to hit for each additional 2 levels. So a 4th level Scorching Ray could either do extra rays, or get a +1 with the three normal ones.
b) Reduce or increase the upcast requirement (to 1 or 3, for example)
c) Allow this to stack with a spell's normal upcast. (this seems obviously abusive)
d) Allow this to stack with Heighten Spell metamagic [3 sorcery points, one target of spell has disadvantage on its save]
