When it comes to homebrew I suppose it is all about breaking the rules in favor of flavor. I want to play a Tortle that can use it's Shell Defense and still do damage. Please tell me if I am asking for to much with the following suggestion.
Class: Artificer/Artillerist (Siege Tank)
So imagine this: a Tortle who's shell is manned by a crew of Myconid Sprouts. Narratively we could say the Tortle just started to venture out and being a bit inexperienced got gravely wounded in "the wilderness". A nearby Myconid colony noticed the opportunity to meld with the Tortle but because the Tortle was not dead yet (and it has proficiency in Nature with super Intelligence), it managed to stay in control and sway a few Myconid Sprouts to rather tend to it's wounds and inhabit it's shell. Now there are 3-4 mushroom people living in this Tortle's Shell, spreading fungi with various properties to function as a spellcasting focus to cast it's Artificer Spells.
The rules stipulates that the only action that a Tortle can take while in Shell Defence is a bonus action to "come out of it's shell". I want to break the rules by using the Message Cantrip to give the Myconid Crew the command to fire the Eldritch Cannon while in Shell Defense, not to cast any Artificer Spells.
Can you visualize these mushroom guys scuttling about the Tortle's shell, loading mini catapults (attached to it's shell with woodcarver's tools) with deadly spores and firing them at enemies. These "Spore Cannons" will be attached to the Tortles shell and would obviously be visible as the source of dmg, so the "Spore Cannons" could be attacked separately like any other Eldritch Cannon.
