I know there are magic for crossbows that remove the Loading property, but are there any homebrew options for removing the two-handed option. I have a PC that can only use simple weapons and the hand crossbow is a martial weapon. (Or is there magic that can turn a hand crossbow into a simple weapon?)
Weapons are notoriously difficult to fiddle with - i usually just create a custom cantrip and add it to the character via one of the magic initiate feats - You can call the cantrip "Crossbow of the XXXX" then just manually adjust the to hit and dmage mods once the cantrip is on their sheet.
If it's only a proficiency issue, then you can also just add hand crossbow proficiency to that character manually. As a DM, you can also specify that it affects only that particular weapon (like a pact of the blade warlock). You don't need to fiddle with the weapon itself.
