I don't normally post here, but it dawns on me that not everyone reads r/lfg, so I thought I'd toss a post out here to widen my net. This is a cut/paste of my Reddit post, apologies if this is not the place.
I just got my 2nd vaccination shot, I’m ready to start running a 5e campaign from my home again and I’m looking for 2 more players. I’m looking to start the game itself around the end of May/beginning of June, when my current 3 players will also be fully vaccinated. In the meantime, as we build our group I’ll do interviews, session 0’s, build characters together on Discord, work through backstories, and be ready to roll when it’s time to start the game itself. I don’t have a date or time set aside, and won’t until I know who is playing. All I know right now is that this will be a weekly game.
About me and my games:
I've been running since '76 and am heavily role playing focused. My worlds are alive and dynamic, characters in their own right.
My games are combat-light (if I had to estimate, I’d say the ratio is something like 65:35 RP:combat). There will be entire sessions with no combat, just interactions between the players and NPCs, especially in cities and the like. Ideally there will be times when the PCs interact with each other for large portions of the game and I’m hardly talking at all! I try to minimize reading “block text” style narratives and describe things more organically, where possible.
My worlds are open/sandbox style, the story is adapted to the characters and their actions/decisions, with vast amounts of player agency. Because of this, players will get out of the game what they put into it, and the more participation and energy they invest, (into their characters, the party, and the world), the more everyone gets out of it. These games run for years and the characters have a great deal of impact on the world - for good or ill.
My home is LGBTQ+ friendly. I’ve also found that, in general, a broad variety of people at the table greatly enriches the game; FTR, the 3 players I currently have for this game are 2 women and a man.
I enjoy RP theory and am constantly exploring concepts and mechanics. I've written a couple of posts, here, here, and here to give you an idea of my thoughts. This guy's post is also a great read. I also can't recommend Matt's video enough, especially at the time linked. I agree with most of the points in Ginny’s video and all of my games live by the code of JoCat.
My worlds are broadly-expanded "canon" (Faerun or Eberron typically) with content distilled from decades of D&D, stuff I’ve found on the ‘net, prior campaigns I’ve run, and things I make up on the spot.
I run 5e RAW (rules as written), defaulting to RAF (rules as fun) if there is a conflict. I have very few homebrew rules – most everything is straight up 5e from D&DBeyond. We build characters here, I share all of the books, everything is done here on this site.
My style is not for everyone. There are players who adore the way I run a campaign, and those who hate it. To help give you a sense as to which camp you’ll likely fall into: Adventure League players who are only interested in the game mechanics will not like my style. People who think RP is silly and Matt Mercer has "ruined D&D" will *really* not enjoy my games. There is no good/bad/right/wrong way to run or play D&D--just bad fits and mismatched expectations, which is why I post a giant wall of text for my ad.
The games are in my home gameroom, with plenty of minis, a big table, comfortable chairs, and space dedicated for D&D. The house has no small children, 1 cat, few allergens, A/C, and minimal distractions. I don't allow smoking/vaping in the house, though breaks to step outside are fine. Social drinking is fine, in moderation. I've found that people who get blasted while playing drastically reduce the quality of the game for everyone else.
What I'm looking for wrt players:
Must be COVID-vaccinated, fully, no exceptions. I’ve immuno-compromised people living in my home, so no one comes in without showing their card.
Experience doesn't matter, new players are as welcome as crusty old veterans. Knowledge of the rules is far less important than a commitment to open RP and a willingness to learn more.
I don’t run min/maxed games, so if you’ve ever asked your GM “is there a limit to the number of classes I can multi-class into?” or “of course you’ll let me use my homebrew race/class/spells/feats?” then you’ll likely not enjoy my table. Every character choice (class, race, background) has meaning in my games. For example, Warlock is not a “dip” class, it has consequences and complications. Paladin Oaths are a fundamental part of the character and define who they are.
I am very much a Brecht "party as character" GM vs Stanislavski, so if you're inclined to do something ******y to the party or game world and then defended your actions with "that's what my character would do", please don't waste either of our time--you won't enjoy my game.
My games are collaborative--the players all work together towards shared goals. There's plenty of room within that to be "interesting", but players being jerks to each other is not conducive to open RP. No PvP. Player and world boundaries are established before play starts and everyone respects them, without exception.
Please come to actually play. If your idea of a fun 4-hour session is 30 min of DnD and 3.5 hours of side chatting, playing on your phone, and socializing about anything but the game, you'll have more fun finding a board game group at one of the great local gaming venues.
If you’re interested, drop me a PM and we’ll chat.

Ancient GM, started in '76, have played almost everything at some point or another.
I run/play Mercer-style games, heavy on the RP and interaction, light on the combat-monster and rule-lawyering. The goal is to tell an epic story with the players and the players are as involved in the world building as the GM is. I run and play a very Brechtian style, am huge into RP theory and love discussing improv and offers.
