Greetings and welcome!
I’m Starr and I’m the DM of a new homebrew world that I have been working on for several years. Together with another player (Kitsumeo) we are looking to form a party that is bold enough to explore the world of Aesteris. Do you have what it takes to uncover all of Aesteris’ mysteries? Are you ready to face and survive all the threats of the untamed lands and civilizations you will come across with? Did I mention there is treasure?
Welcome! Aesteris is the product of around 3+ years of planning and ideas, which I’m currently in the process of attempting to convert into a more coherent Campaign Setting book.
As this is a new homebrew world in development with lots of room for additional ideas to be explored, I’m always open to player input for concepts, be it faction, religions or even a homebrew race or class. All can be discussed, just keep in mind that I may need to tweak homebrew slightly to fit into lore and for balancing purposes (I’ll discuss it with you so that it’s a collaborative effort).
Although the world is somewhat young, it will be rich with events going on in the background with the intension of their being multiple plots and personal character stories to explore wherever your characters choose to visit. The world is filled with varying cultures across the main continents and there is the potential to explore new planes of existence such as the Waking Dream, the Rotting Void and the Celestial Steppes… as well as the familiar ones like the elemental planes, the Hells and the Feywild.
The current age begins just after the Age of Fen Fall, a period in which the inhabitants of the world are only just becoming aware that the creator goddess that produced the planet died a few hundred years ago. Whilst there are those who've suspected something was up when the goddess Fenria became silent to their prayers, most have been somewhat oblivious to the fact as the gods manifested a new deity to replace Fenria.
In the current age, the various titans that once walked the world's surface and swam it's oceans have vanished. Some believe it to be connected to Fenria's demise, others believe the act of killing the great phoenix Ios sent them into a hibernation of mourning, though none truly know where or why they went.
During the session zero we’ll work out the preference of starting location, initial plot hook to bring the party together and any goals your characters might have for me to develop story arcs around… along with all the usual stuff about likes, dislikes, homebrew, house rules, lore, etc.
About me and my DMing style
My name is Andy, but many people call me Starr.
I’m 34 years old and have been playing D&D and other roleplay games for as long as I can remember, I have primarily been gaming as a DM since I was about 17 as I love that side of the game. I started out in World of Darkness, then jumped into Warhammer Fantasy and then settled into D&D – though I do still dip into lots of other systems for one-shots and mini campaigns.
I’d say that I’m quite the laid back type and am more of the type of DM that is keen on working together to tell a fun and interesting story than locking down the game because a rule says you cannot do a certain thing… obviously I won’t just throw all the rules out the window, just that I might go ‘okay, how exactly might you do that’ from time to time.
My preferred style is to use a reasonable amount of theatre of the mind with images to help with visualising a scene, then battle maps might come out for combat encounters or certain legs of the journey. Though I may occasionally throw a random map out just to keep the players guessing...
I’m someone who loves a good story and will always be happy to sit back and listen to the players roleplay between themselves. If I feel that we need to move on with the story or it’s gone on for a bit longer than it should, then I’ll usually give a notice of a few minutes to let the group find a good place to tie up the scene so we can continue.
Discord is my go-to for voice communications and, for a virtual tabletop experience, I often either host the game on Roll20 or Foundry. Though I’m also happy to try out other platforms if there’s a preference for one in particular.
If everyone else is happy with it, I am absolutely fine with you rolling physical dice… if rolling those misshapen fate balls are key to your fun then I trust you to be honest.
Tell me about you!
If you’re interested, could you give a brief introduction of yourself, like your experiences with D&D?
How old are you?
How much experience do you have roleplaying and playing D&D?
How do you normally prefer to play D&D?
Do you use any of the Virtual Tabletop systems like Roll20/Foundry or do you prefer more of a theatre of the mind approach with either voice/video?
Do you prefer to roll virtually or with physical dice?
Do you have a preferred theme for an adventure and how the characters fit into things?
Do you have a preferred class or race (existing or homebrew) that you plan on playing? (Don’t worry if you don’t know yet, it is just to get a scope for the group)
Tell us about the favourite character you’ve played!
How would you react as a character on the following fragment (write 2-3 sentences)?
You are in a tavern, sitting around enjoying a drink or a meal, or perhaps you enjoy playing some cards or you are just walking in. When you hear a ferocious roar! As you look, you see two black panthers standing dangerously at the side of what seems to be an elven girl and a halfling.
If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try to answer them as best I can.
I wish you all a great day and hope you have fun thinking about how to react on the situation.
My name is Comguy im 18 years old and have been playing D&D For around 2 years on and off now. I have never played IRL so I'm used to playing online, I use Roll20, but also up for theatre of the mind. I like rolling with virtual dice, I don't really have a preferred theme but I do like when the world moves along and stuff changes the longer the party leaves it, I am hoping to play a warforged, class unknown right now. my favourite character i have played has got to be XV my warforged fighter who was becoming a sorcerer before his premature death saving another party member,
My reaction on the last bullet point can very from what type of character I'm playing but I guess I could do it in the mind of XV. XV would look the two people up and down to spot any weapons, then keep an eye on them to make sure they don't try anything funny with any of the patrons, then try not to get involved with them.
Hey! I'm Sylvig, 37, and I don’t have much experience in roleplaying or playing d&d, tho I am familiar with a lot of it through youtube and a few podcasts and I am eager to learn more and get the experience. Since I’m pretty new to all of it I don’t really have much preferences on platforms and styles just yet but I am open to most things. Rolling digital dice seems like a good fit for an online campaign but I also don’t mind rolling physical dice. I don’t really have a preference on themes for the adventure either but in general I do enjoy the classic fantasy adventure, found family and heist stories.
I have a few character concepts (half orc paladin, human bard and half elf wizard) I’ve been toying with so it would be great to get to play one of them and I'm of course open to tweaking them so that whoever I bring fits the campaign.
As for the situation presented, I'm going to think this through the paladin. I think she would try to see if the newcommers are friendly or hostile towards the general public and maybe position herself between them and possible children/other clearly vulnerable folk present to protect them if needed. Keep an eye on the cats and call out a greeting to the elf and the halfling and ask them about the panthers.
I'm Sylvig#2145 over on discord and I hope to hear from you soon. Your world seems awesome and it would be great to get to explore it further!
Hey, I'm 21 and fairly new to D&D. I've played several games with friends but none have lasted till higher levels. I don't have a preference if the rolls are virtual or not and I have experience in foundry but can easily learn roll20. I like high fantasy themes the best but I'm down for most anything. I have been wanting to try some subclasses from Tasha's.
In that scenario I would first try to see who, if anyone, was commanding the panthers. Then I would try talking to that person first to see who they are and why they brought panthers into a tavern.
I'm AluminumSpartan#0922 on discord and hope to hear from you. The world you have here really sounds interesting and I'd love to see how it plays.
I am Joseph, 21 years old. I have a decent amount of experience in DnD, I have been a long-time DM and I have a bunch of fun character ideas to try out. I know a decent amount about DnD but I certainly do not know everything. I used to want to be an actor so roleplaying is super fun for me, and I love doing it. I have only played DnD online on foundry VTT and over discord. I am perfectly fine doing either theatre of the mind or using a virtual tabletop. I know how much effort it takes to set up VTT's so I certainly sympathize if you don't want to use them. I am fine with using voice and video, I think DnD is more fun when you can see everyone and their facial expressions. I prefer to roll physically, with a camera on of course to make sure I am doing everything properly, but I don't mind rolling virtually. There is just something about the clanging of dice that makes DnD feel more real to me. For the theme, I don't necessarily have a preference, I would love to be able to have my characters backstory be woven into the campaign to give me opportunities to grow. I am not a huuuuge fan of sandbox worlds since there is usually too much to do. I am either thinking of playing a tiefling/variant human warlock, my idea for the character has a more southern vibe to it. I have a bunch of characters though and can play any role needed! I haven't played in a game yet, but my favorite NPC I have played as a DM is a crazy wizard who deals in "experimental" magic. He was a mad wizard type, but he had spells that would summon absurd animals and do very unhelpful things. He had accidentally teleported himself into a realm in between life and death while trying to perfect a summoning spell.
I would immediately be on my guard, cautious of the dangerous beasts on either side of the group. I would try to get some kind of a read on the overall vibe of the people and animals, and if they seemed to be just intimidating I would approach them and try to make Smalltalk. Otherwise, I would ask the bartender what they know about the group and if they have seen them before, trying to discern if their intent is hostile towards me.
My discord is Quisvillius#6315. I am super excited about the prospect of meeting some cool people and exploring the world you have spent so long making! If you need anything more from me just message me here or on my discord. Thank you for your consideration! Have a great day.
I am 30 years old. Been playing Ttrpgs for almost 20 years on and off. I like to play both online and face to face but as I have been blessed and cursed with been a forever GM it is usaly what ever is best for my players (oh how I wish to be a pc for once haha). I like to play theatre of the mind only because I am more used to it but I have used alot of maps aspecaly for big combats. I like to roll real dice but when playing online it is the GM decision. I don't have a preference for themes really for me it's just as long as the characters have a stack in the adventures and have a drive. When I get to be a pc I am usaly a battle healer so clerics for druids (as I love me some nature) but I like all classes and races I usaly go for what fits in with the adventer and what the party needs. My favourite character was tabaxi bard named Toth he was such a cheeky chappy who loved to play jokes on his friends but would end up dieing to save them all from a litch (may he rest in pice). If the character I have in my head was to see this he would trun around and say "aaaww prity kitty please my I say hello" as a 7 foot tall furblog stoops down to try and pet them.
Thanks J hope to hear from you sounds really cool and I wish you all the best and many adventures.
This game sounds awesome! I'd love to join if you've still got space :D My discord is IcelordCryo#9369 if you want to message me
I'm 30 years old
I have a few years of D&D experience, but have yet to fully complete a campaign
I've only played a handful of classes, but I prefer the casting playstyle as it's useful both in RP and in combat
I have a preference towards VTTs, just so it's easier to keep track of where everyone is.
Due to a lack of owning dice, I use virtual dice lol
I have no preference of themes for adventures, the process of exploration alone is something I enjoy.
So far my favorite character that I've made is a Divination Wizard (I didn't pick luck, don't worry lol) and I've done a tiny bit of homebrew on their race (nothing crazy, I'd be more than happy to elaborate).
Startled, my character's first reaction to hearing the roar and seeing the panthers would be to seek cover to better assess the situation. Assuming the panthers are well trained, I'd approach the elf and halfling and ask them if they'd be comfortable leaving their animals outside as to avoid any accidents.
Thanks everyone for posting about joining and for answering the questions, I'll send each of you an invite on Discord tomorrow after I finish work (I finish around 17:00 GMT+2) so that I can have a brief chat with each of you.
@GreenIlargia, could you send me a message with your Discord handle please.

The Discord handle you posted appears to be incorrect, have you changed it since posting?
Hi! If you're still considering people, I'd like to give it a go!
How old are you? 29
How much experience do you have roleplaying and playing D&D? ~3 years with DnD and dabbled in Pathfinder a bit.
How do you normally prefer to play D&D? I enjoy playing a character, not a statblock. I Like to have a character I'm invested in and that can make connections with the party along the way. I do still enjoy tactics and the combat side of things, but I've never been a real "min/max" style player.
Do you use any of the Virtual Tabletop systems like Roll20/Foundry or do you prefer more of a theatre of the mind approach with either voice/video? I've used VTT like Roll20 and FantasyGrounds. Honestly, I'm fine for either, but normally theatre of the mind has put a lot of effort on the DM and the aid of a VTT has always been useful for them.
Do you prefer to roll virtually or with physical dice?Well, nothing beats physical dice rolling! But for online play, I honestly don't mind virtual dice rolls.
Do you have a preferred theme for an adventure and how the characters fit into things? High fantasy is the general theme I've stuck to. The theme of the adventure can be really anything, as long as there's some way to give an initial purpose to things, such as why you and the party are there and why you are together.
Do you have a preferred class or race (existing or homebrew) that you plan on playing? I'm rather flexible here, as it depends on how I plan on trying to fit into the world, but I can say off the top of my head that I likely prefer a range class, whether that be a something like a ranger or spell caster. Something like a bow wielding hexblade warlock seems fun to me.
Tell us about the favourite character you’ve played! It was a Horizon Walker Ranger called Tarik. Initially part of a mercenary group, after a demonic incursion murdered most of the group, he had to find a new purpose for himself, and eventually decided on trying to find the truth behind what happened to protect others from such horrific encounters with other planes. I enjoyed the interactions I had with one party member, who was a past acquaintance in our mutual history. We'd have these "You remember when" moments a lot.
How would you react as a character on the following fragment (write 2-3 sentences)? Assuming that the panthers are protection for one of them, I'd try not to do anything that could be considered hostile towards them and try figure out what had caused the panthers to roar. Someone might get hurt soon from the panthers, but until then I'd keep my distance and maybe whoever is playing cards with me or serving drinks can tell me more. In this case, whatever went down, I'd make sure not to spill my drink.
If you'd like to hit me up, can find me on discord: Xoorauch#8154
How much experience do you have roleplaying and playing D&D? Answer: I have been roleplaying since I was 12 and played DnD for the past four years I also dabbled in pathfinder.
How do you normally prefer to play D&D? Answer: I don't have too much of a preference but I suppose Online would fit best for this situation.
Do you use any of the Virtual Tabletop systems like Roll20/Foundry or do you prefer more of a theatre of the mind approach with either voice/video? Anwer: I am familiar with roll20 but we usually combined it with Voice Chat and sometimes Video chat.
Do you prefer to roll virtually or with physical dice? Answer: I have no qualms with using virtual dice though I do own my own dice, it is up to the DM in my eyes.
Do you have a preferred theme for an adventure and how the characters fit into things? Answer: I love high fantasy and I love it when I get to play as unique races that aren't really found in the world of DnD.
Do you have a preferred class or race (existing or homebrew) that you plan on playing? (Don’t worry if you don’t know yet, it is just to get a scope for the group) Answer: I have played a Bloodhunter, several clerics and some Rangers as well for a couple of Druids, I think this time I would love to play as a sorcerer or cleric and I enjoy playing as Draconic humanoids that are more akin to elves with dragon scales and horns than Dragonborns.
Tell us about the favourite character you’ve played! Answer: I honestly don't know which one to pick, I had Laela Bondryrdaes who was a Sylvan Spring Court Bloodhunter from the Feywild, she was a younger Elf and eager to learn but was also naive and so had no comprehension of morals which caused for a lot of fun scenes in the human cities.
Or I'd pick my Wizard Tymmerria who'd managed to manipulate the gods fighting against her into actually committing the acts she wanted them to commit so she could ascend to godhood, both were a blast to play especially when Tymmerria became insane in the end of the campaign but still managed to use her intelligence to get to her goal!
Answer:
Finally having arrived at a place of shelter and rest I open the doors of the tavern and let some of my fellow adventurers in after me. However as I wait for them all to get inside I pick up a ferocious growl from somewhere in the corners of the tavern, to my surprise and slight excitment I see two black panthers from my homeland with an Elven girl and a Halfling! Sadly for my last friend I completely forget to hold open the door as I make my way to the pair with the panthers, the door slams against my friend's door who throws a couple of playful insults at me but my mind is far too focused on greeting these interesting travelers to hear about the stories they might be willing to tell me! As a proper introduction I greet the panthers and duo of travelers with a customary greeting from my homeland, hopefully they will recognise it!
Im 18 and have played for almost 2 years now and love all aspects of roleplaying down to the combat, and I really don't have much experience with in person play due to the past year and a half's events. I do so far enjoy the convience of playing the game from home but would love to one day have an in person campaign. I have used roll20 and currently use it in my two campaigns during the week and I personally dont mind using virtual or real world dice, my luck usually remains the same (high highs, low lows). I love the fantasy setting and Im getting into enjoying the kind of low tech vibes that Artificer brings combining science and magic. As for class I can be whatever is needed of me, I always love to be the support/tank rolls and I can take that and run with it, but as for races I have some that I enjoy, such as changlings, and hopefully one day a homebrewed construct/reborn type of creature. My favorite character despite not playing them often, because of sessions being cancelled way to often for my liking, would be my changling sorceress who surpringly was more roguish for her own survival purposes due to her spendng almost 5 decades in the underdark hiding as a dark elf.
As for scenario, depending on my character I may sit back and survey the situation first, I may spring into action and cut down the mighty beasts, or if play say a Druid or Ranger try to tame them and take them outside. For me character is everything and how my character would react is more imperative to the story.

Hey all O/
I enjoyed reading all your reactions on the little fragment!
Looking forward to see who my future party members will be.
Anyone still considering just post! Worst-case we will let you all duke it out in a battle royal. I can't promise there won't be any panthers ;)
The Discord handle you posted appears to be incorrect, have you changed it since posting?

Answer: I am 23 years old.
Answer: I have been roleplaying since I was 12 and played DnD for the past four years I also dabbled in pathfinder.
Answer: I don't have too much of a preference but I suppose Online would fit best for this situation.
Anwer: I am familiar with roll20 but we usually combined it with Voice Chat and sometimes Video chat.
Answer: I have no qualms with using virtual dice though I do own my own dice, it is up to the DM in my eyes.
Answer: I love high fantasy and I love it when I get to play as unique races that aren't really found in the world of DnD.
Answer: I have played a Bloodhunter, several clerics and some Rangers as well for a couple of Druids, I think this time I would love to play as a sorcerer or cleric and I enjoy playing as Draconic humanoids that are more akin to elves with dragon scales and horns than Dragonborns.

For me character is everything and how my character would react is more imperative to the story.
it should be right Icelordcryo#9369 I copied it from Discord this time
Ok, I've sent everyone who's posted so far friend requests so that I can chat to each of you individually during this week.
