My name is SoftlyForte (my real name will be given when I actually join a group), and I'm looking for a group to play the "Curse of Strahd" campaign module between Wednesday and Sunday after 8 P.M. EST once a week. I have been playing D&D for nearly 12 years and have even played some of the original "Curse of Strahd" material for 1st edition.
Below I have some extra information about what I'd be looking for in a group that would get me to be the most engaged, and for those of you who do these things, I believe I would be a great addition to keeping that dynamic going.
I'd like a group that likes to role-play as their characters while playing, such as speaking among party members or speaking with NPCs. In combat scenarios we'll just speak as ourselves so we can strategize.
Game play wise I'd like 65%~ role-play, exploration, puzzle-solving, etc. and 35%~ combat. Ravenloft is one of my favourite settings next to Dragonlance, so I'd like to do more than just fight.
Lastly, regarding combat, I'd heavily prefer to use something along the lines of Roll20 (or anything grid related). The entire campaign outside of combat can be just word of mouth, but a lot of strategy regarding combat is gated behind grid so I'd like to have something like this in place.
I'm looking for something similar! Hopefully we can find a group soon.
I've been playing off and on since AD&D days in the early 80s. I love working together with a team to discover and solve problems. I love getting into character and especially writing fully fleshed out backstories and keeping my characters true to those identities. As for dislikes, I am all for making competitive builds, but extreme min/maxing and arguing over the last single point can get tedious; not a game breaker, but I have seen it fracture gaming groups when you have that one player who just has to argue and nitpick everything. I like all classes other than Bard and Wizard really. I tend to gravitate towards archers/gunslingers, fighter, rogues, and sorcerers. Flexible, lot of RP, very experienced with combat tactics in general from 20'ish years of table top miniature gaming. I prefer to play as a group rather than a bunch of individuals, unless character types/stories dictate. I'm very familiar with discord for playing. I run a couple discord servers for 50-150 people for different games, hobbies, etc.
50k' view of me and my gaming. I worked in IT for 20+ years before going back to school to be a mental health addiction recovery counselor. I've played D&D off an on since the AD&D days in the early 80s. The past 15 or so years I haven't played more than a couple campaigns, but I've DM'd several campaigns for my own kids who now love the game. I've also spent a lot of the gaming time for the past 20 years in table top miniature wargaming (Warhammer Fantasy, Warmachine, Iron Kingdoms steampunk, myriad historical era's, etc). I enjoy both the RP and the combat aspect, I love a good story. I try to not min/max and get bogged down in hyper details, but I still build competitive characters will full backstories. I like to loosely base my characters off of favorite fantasy characters from some favorite books (LotR, Belgariad, GoT, etc). They are not replicates by any stretch, just loosely inspired concepts. I'm very flexible when it comes to game systems, settings, flavor, etc. I've played in typical high fantasy, little magic fantasy (low fantasy?), steampunk, Iron Kingdoms, etc. I've never played full campaigns in a wild west or sci-fi settings, only one-offs. I'm flexible in race/class characters as I've played as well. While I prefer to play archers, fighters, rogues, sorcerers, I can play pretty much anything that party might need, except Bards and Wizards lol
About 95% of my D&D gameplay over the past 12 years has been with AD&D 2nd edition with the Dragonlance campaign setting, so it's great to see another fellow player of the earlier version. I also heavily min/max my characters but that doesn't mean purely for combat, I min/max my character to best fit the deep character story I write for them, so I'll pretty much never drop intelligence below 10 for example even for classes that gain zero benefit from doing so, as it effects how I want to role-play them. Regrading the classes and characters I like to play, it's 100% what fits the environment and what will be fun to role-play as, so for me the most fun class for "Curse of Strahd" would be a Righteous Paladin and very closely followed by Cleric.
I too work in the IT field however not nearly as long as you. Currently I work as a Junior Automation Software Developer and I'm enjoying it very much so far.
Hopefully we are able to find a DM that would be looking to start a "Curse of Strahd" campaign, as I believe you and I would get along perfectly.
