The heavy fog seems reluctant to part as the ship floats silently along the quiet harbor. You see occasional wisps of land reaching out through the thick clouds, only to vanish the moment you go to take a second look. Then you hear the call from above. The first sighting of light since entering the waterway. And all of a sudden, the fog parts like a curtain, revealing a towering city stretching around both sides of the harbor like arms waiting to greet you. Further along, you see the city rising abruptly on the hills and cliffs that erupt out of the harbor. And as your eyes are drawn upward, several hundred feet up, you see it, a beacon shining in the night out across the open seas and towering over the lands for miles. A citadel of pure marble, lined with gold leaf that shimmers with the mystical and eerie light formed by golden dragon fire and brilliant blue sapphires. You’ve heard the tales, but never seen it up close: the Great Citadel of Kam Bury, largest and greatest city of the Illaxian kingdom.
A Brief History of Illaxia
Our campaigns (and many of our one-shots) all take place in the realm of Ætheon, a super-earth sized world of the material plane that lies at the crossroads of several astral ley lines which fracture and alter the rules of magic across the world. Each region feels, experiences, and utilizes magic in different ways, sometimes with great differences across short distances. Given the size of the world and the powers that dominate over it, various regions will be released over time to create a more cohesive storyline.
The first release is the campaign kingdom of Illaxia. According to legend, nearly a thousand years ago, the Dragon King, Brayden Illaxia, united the kingdom’s mostly human and often bickering provinces against an invasion by the crystal-empowered Mystic Emperium. King Brayden and his twin brother, Cedric, undertook a daring journey beyond the deadly Kava Mountains in a last ditch effort to save their people. While no record exists recording exactly what happened over the snow-capped peaks, it is well-documented that the brothers returned astride the dragons of legend, Brego and Atreu. The provinces united in defeating the Emperium, and the king declared that the kingdom would henceforth be named “Illaxia,” a local term meaning “light of the dragon.”
Under the advice (and some argue, under the influence) of their trusted dragon advisors, Brayden choose to leave no legal heir, but instead required his heirs (and any others who would challenge for the role) to undergo the same trials of the dragons he and Cedric endured. This arrangement allowed the dragons considerable influence in choosing the future kings of Illaxia, and while Brego and Atreu lived, the kingdom thrived and developed a strong atonement to magic powered by the dragons and the defeated mystics’ crystals.
However, the legendary dragons have now been gone for nearly four centuries, and successive kings have reacted poorly to the many pressing problems confronting the realm. The Trials of the Dragons have become publicized affairs, and the dragons have been accused of advancing their own agendas more often. Now, the kingdom mourns the loss of King Kamaria at the age of 24, yet after many months, the dragons have not shown any interest in hosting another round of Trials, leaving the kingdom without a king.
About DM Delphi
Delphi has been playing various forms of role-playing games formally for more than 2 decades, including online, written, table top and more, and informally, they've been playing and performing roles all their life. They love creating and sharing stories, all the more so when the players truly become part of the world by surprising them with their choices.
Professionally, they have a background in history and are a recently-recovering educator, and they bring both to the gaming table by helping players learn the game and developing the massive living world of Ætheon where all of their campaigns and stories are directly interconnected with players having a direct impact on the world (and potentially, other campaigns).
THE KING OF DRAGONS IS DEAD. For almost a thousand years, the kingdom of Illaxia has thrived from an alliance with the dragons, who would choose the each ruler from among the acceptable heirs. Now, King Kamaria is dead, leaving the realm leaderless as threats grow on all sides, with the dragons nowhere to be found. Can you discover the secrets of the ancient alliance of the Dragons and Dragon Lords? The answers and your choices will determine the fate of millions.
Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online Experience: Experienced DM looking for players for paid open-world campaign Cost: $30/player/session Location/Timezone: Pacific (GMT -7 summer / GMT -8 winter) Schedule: Currently scheduled for Fridays at 8:00 am. Roles sought: Looking for 4-6 players. BEGINNERS WELCOME Game style: Players can expect a fair and moderately paced adventure where they can explore what they are interested in. Offered stories will often tie in to one (or many) character's backgrounds and the main storyline. I tend to lean a little heavier on roleplay, and ask that players get into their characters and have some fun with them, letting them make poor choices if that makes sense for the character. We will be starting this campaign from level 2, so at this point the campaign is open to all, and I encourage those who may have little experience but want to try a long-term campaign to join us.
The Storm Coast has always been well named. The storms are getting stronger and have wiped out the small river town of Brayden's Landing. And now, as the storms move further inland, they are starting to threaten all of Illaxia. Can you help the coast before its too late?
