Game: D&D 5e Group type: In-Person Experience: DM has several years as a player, but new to DM-ing Schedule: Weekly on Sunday, 1:30PM - 5:30PM Roles sought: 3-4 Players, any role - Noobs preferred! Game style: Casual, but we want to take progression seriously
So, what's up with this group?
We would like to put a group together who will enjoy spending time with each other as much as they'll enjoy playing D&D.
Wait, you want really want old people?
We're looking for players who are a little older, that way we won't feel bad squinting at the player character sheets we're holding at arms-length while we complain about our aches and pains. Target demographic? Probably 40-50-ish... although, we might consider younger players as long as they're willing to show up with prune juice, Ben-Gay and Vick's Vap-o-Rub. If they get snarky, we might force them to wear Depends and drink the prune juice (we don't touch the stuff).
Wait, you really want noobs?
So, my wife decided she'd like to play D&D (I know... how lucky am I?!), and she's a total noob. Although I've got experience with RPGs as a player, it's my first time as DM. I know there has been a serious surge in interest in D&D and I know it's very difficult for brand new players to find a game. We feel this is a good opportunity to seek out these players so we can all learn together. We might consider more experienced players, but only if they come to the table with a real heart for helping new players learn how to play the game and have fun doing it. Also, if we do bring in an experienced player, having your sourcebooks on hand for the new players would be helpful (see below: "What should I bring?")
So, what's up with this DM?
I started playing D&D back in 7th grade with the original boxed sets... the blue and red boxes that came with yellow dice. This was roughly the same time fire was discovered and some guy named Ugh-Ugh created the square wheel. Fortunately, his neighbor Ugh-Ugh (we really didn't have a lot of names to choose from back then) tried rounding the corners and created the improved version.
I moved on to AD&D and played that through high school and into college. I've spent the last 2 1/2 years playing 5th Edition and have really enjoyed how the game has evolved from the 'save or die' system of previous centuries. I think I have some good ideas for running a game, so I thought I'd try my hand at DM-ing.
Holy crap, you're old!
And crotchety. Actually, we're about 50-ish.
So, what's up with this game?
Our campaign setting will be a medieval high fantasy world. We are going to follow published rules in official sources, unless specified in the campaign rules. Since we're all going to be new at this, we will kick off our efforts with a short campaign of 3-4 sessions to see if we gel as a group. If we do, then we'll most likely play one of the published adventures like Curse of Strahd or Tomb of Annihilation. If we don't, well... we'll burn that bridge when we cross it. Or, is it "Cross that bridge when we burn it?"... I don't know... all I remember is it's something about bridges being on fire.
So, what can I expect?
Funny you should ask. You can expect the following:
A relaxed environment where a sense of humor is appreciated
A forgiving and understanding attitude towards learning the rules
A gaming experience where role-play is encouraged and rewarded
A good mixture of role-play, exploration and combat
A tolerance for new players learning how to do any of this stuff
An addiction to buying dice. We don't know why this happens, but it does
So, when do we start?
In the next week or two, I hope. We will start with 'Session Zero' where we will discuss expectations, read up on characters and get to know each other a little. We might even start the adventure.
So, what should I bring?
D&D is like any other hobby - something that can eat up a lot of money very quickly. We really don't want finances to be an obstacle for new players, so we will provide dice, player character sheets and access to sourcebooks during our starting sessions. Once you have a feel for if this is a hobby you want to pursue, you can decide at that time how much you want to spend.
Wow! You're amazing!
I get that a lot.
No, really... you're amazing!
Um.. yeah. I know. Duh.
Seriously, I really don't have to bring anything?
Okay... you caught me. There is one other thing you must bring: A positive attitude. Seriously... we're asking a group of people to take time out of their lives to play a game, so the least we can do is work together to ensure we all have a rewarding experience. Plus, most of the players we're looking for don't have a lot of time left.
Is there anything I shouldn't bring?
Here are things you should not bring:
A toxic personality or attitude
Political agendas
Social crusades
Evangelical missions
Multi-level marketing or other income 'opportunities'
Political Correctness
The rest is laid out in the campaign rules, which are mentioned below.
I'm ready to commit!
Honestly, if you made it this far you've shown you're pretty committed. Here's what you need to do:
A little bit about you: Married but my wife hates D&D lol so I have to go out and play....also into motorcycles and horror movies
What experience do you have playing D&D: Been playing 5E for about a year now....my group recently broke apart
Why are you interested in playing D&D: Love the roleplaying and battles!
How can you contribute to creating a positive experience for the group: I'm pretty outgoing but I don't dominate the conversation plus I'm a huge team player
What would be the biggest 'turn-off' for you in a group like this: People not showing up.
If you had a character that could do one thing, what would it be: Breathe under water
