Experience: DM for a weekly campaign that lasted six months before I separated from the Air Force. That was three years ago so I need to shake off the rust and refamiliarize with the rules and get back into the groove of things, so new or patient groups are what I'm really looking for.
Completely new to online play, hopefully there are friendly and patient guides, especially when it comes to the software. Noob to things like Discord and Roll20, open to downloading whatever is necessary for your game.
Location: Middle Tennessee, south and east of Nashville
Central Standard Time
Availability:
Online:
Mon-Fri 5:00 PM-10:00 PM CST
Sat 5:00 PM CST - Whenever unless I'm not working
Sun Whenever - 10:00 PM CST
In-Person: Some Fridays-Sunday depending on work, similar hours to my online availability. Commuting an hour each way makes driving to play more difficult.
Preferred role: Player first, then DM
Game Style: Anything listed is flexible, just stating preferences.
-Not looking for One-Shots
-Homebrew Campaign preferred, okay with trying published stories as a player only.
-60-40/70-30 ratio of Planned Plot to Combat, randomized encounters are fun too and I'd like to try the occasional dungeon crawl so long as it doesn't last 4+ sessions.
-Published Resources to serve as the base for character builds but reflavoring and adjusting is fine, preferably no complete homebrew rules/races/classes (i.e. I've played a barbarian with all abilities retextured to use Dex modifiers, Wild Rages became Cold-Focused Anger instead). Of course exceptions can always be made.
As a DM I am rules strict-lite with flexibility for outside the box creativity with spells and abilities as well as lowering of DCs for good role-playing or clever solutions/arguments. I'm very "Yes and" and "No but" so try anything and ask plenty of questions for what you might do. I will adjust rolls and let you use proficiencies/stats that would make sense for the action you want to attempt.
My philosophy when I DM is to set various points and stops along the train tracks, but if the players want to ignore my story and do their own thing that's fine. Every action and inaction has consequences, the world still moves forward around you, and how you get to the various story beats is entirely up to the party. I won't railroad you unless you specifically ask for it or need a hint to continue along your journey.
Hoping to play with other flexible people. I won't make a character until I know a bit more about settings and the world so my PC will make sense in the realm.
If my players have characters already I'd like for their backstory to be adjustable and hopefully everyone is open to suggestion during session zero. They are also free to make adjustments to their PCs within Sessions 0-2. After that you're stuck unless you change organically within the game or we write your character off and you can make a new one in a way that makes sense.
I have a group that I just founded that has a spot open for Monday, that starts at either 6:30 or 7:30 EST. It's a homebrew campaign with an emphasis on story and plot development revolving around political intrigue amidst a Cold War-like situation between rival nations.
I'll try not to hold the Air Force thing against ya (I was Army) xD
I'm south of Nashville as well; very new to D&D, looking to participate as a player for the moment. If you end up DMing or need one more player at the table please feel free to reach out!
