I'm a library worker in Louisville, KY and I'm planning to host a few in-person gaming programs at the start of 2022 to give newcomers a chance to get familiar with D&D mechanics through some short oneshots (though experienced players are welcome as well). Apologies if "General Discussion" might be a better place for this interest check since it's not for a specific campaign...but I'm wondering if anyone local to the Louisville area (or southern Indiana I guess, since you don't need a library card to attend programs) might be interested in attending anything like this.
Some info:
The games will be held at the downtown Main library, which has program spaces large enough to safely accommodate groups;
Masks are still required in all Louisville Metro buildings including public libraries;
The games would be short, beginner-friendly, likely level 1 oneshots (like 1.5 hours per program because that's the range we're encouraged to stay within unless hosting a huge, annual event) with a variety of different pregen character sheets available in case new players don't know/want to bring their own;
Attendees would need to call a phone number to register to play, but even after seats fill up folks would be welcome to come hang out, observe the games if they don't want to play right away, check out the sourcebooks we have at the library, etc.;
We'd be starting off with D&D but if folks have requests for other TTRPGs they'd like to explore we could move to a system where we play twice a month, one D&D and another "new" game;
Based on library policy the themes of the games would likely not exceed "PG"/"PG-13" level content, and I personally prioritize running a safe, inclusive table;
Because I'm not childrens/teen services trained they'd be listed as "adult" programs but I can definitely see letting kids co-pilot a character with an accompanying adult;
There'd be about 8 spots open for registration to play unless I can do some outreach and recruit another guest GM in which case I can see that doubling.
I'd like to hold these programs twice a month, on the third Thursday (night) and last Saturday (afternoon), but I might be told to cut them back to one a month. If so, I'm wondering if folks who would consider attending have a preference for times. I know Saturdays are the most commonly(/informally) polled times people tend to play, and there are a lot of gaming shops in town I don't want to compete with for scheduling, but I also feel like Saturday may just be the de facto best day (especially for parents and students with busy weekday schedules). Alternately in the spirit of "free" libraries staying truly free and accessible, if I were to schedule them only on Thursday evenings folks wouldn't have to pay for parking downtown after 6PM EST, so that might be a little more egalitarian.
Being able to gauge folks' interest level for these types of programs is incredibly helpful since we don't currently have programs like this for me to look at and plan off of accordingly. I'm very interested in learning whether weeknights vs. weekends would work best for anyone who thinks they might attend, and what other sorts of questions might come up based on the questions above. Thanks for any input in advance!
