I'm current playing in two play by post campaigns and am OBSESSED. It's such a fun way to play. Super immersive and really enjoyable role play.
Pace wise I like active and regular posting, eg daily or every other day. I've been in ones that had 1-2 posts a week and I couldn't hack it.
