THE BATTLE FOR BRURLE HILL - DM log of one evening – three hour battle
It is cold this early morn and deep dark. The sky must be overcast. No moon or stars can be seen. Fighting hard your breath can be seen in the cold air exploding from your lungs. The bridge you must control feels solid under your feet but the cold air has made the wood slats slippery. The bloody remains of dispatched hyenas only make it worse. The initial engagement is going well. Will the high ground be taken before the diversion is discovered?
The struggle to gain control of the bridge goes slowly. Red Mist archers pepper the Enclave fighters from a distance while their hyenas attack directly. Lol’layloren is able to calm many hyenas on the bridge, magically putting them to sleep. The Enclave fighters take the opportunity to move across the bridge to engage the Red Mist fighters who hold the high ground.
More gnolls and hyenas enter the fray from within Brurle’s shack leaving the door open. Trip takes a chance and makes for the shack. Inside he meets Gnurrg, the leader of the Red Mist Tribe. Trip exits swiftly and bars the door to keep Gnurrg from entering the battle. Gnurrg pounds the door calling to his forces, but Trip holds him back. Arrows from Red Mist archers below rain down but rarely hit their marks.
In the distance an old acquaintance appears. It is Arnello of the Travelling Folk, but he has changed. He has become an undead and he seeks vengeance against Gnurrg and all others who caused his current state. Undead Arnello engages the Red Mist archers who were strafing the bridge and keeps them occupied until he is ultimately destroyed by them and their hyenas.
The fighters from the Enclave are holding their own. One fighter is downed but successfully pulled from the chaos of battle. The way is finally cleared and the bridge cables are severed by the Enclave fighters. Red Mist archers below can now only guess where their targets lay. Gnurrg’s secret weapons are unleashed. Two giant hyenas dash and rabidly hurl themselves at the top of the hill. Over and over they attempt to hurdle into the battle around the shack. Finally, one is successful only to be grappled and pushed back over the cliff's edge by the Enclave fighters.
Ashley takes Trip’s position at the door of the shack. Gnurrg continues to pound the door weakening it greatly. Trip moves to a side window and fires with his crossbow into the shack. Gnurrg rages with frustration. He leaps through the window crashing to the ground. Trip’s quick reflexes save him as he darts to the left to avoid the exiting Gnurrg. The time is now. Gnurrg is prone and recovering from his violent exit. The party attacks brutally and with purpose. The leader of the Red Mist Tribe is destroyed.
Gnurrg’s blood soaked body is displayed to the gnoll forces below. Their leader is dead and their remaining forces retreat into the Evyrwood. Now is the time for rest and recovery. Counting the spoils can wait until tomorrow.
