Game: D&D 5e Group type: Foundry VTT with integrated Audio/Video (dedicated Jitsi server) Experience: New and experienced players are welcome Location/Timezone: Florida (US Eastern) Schedule: Friday evenings 9 pm est beginning on April 6th., 2-3 hours per session (updated) Roles sought: 2 Players (remaining)
You’re invited to play a scary game.
Curse of Strahd seeks heroes of all sorts and pits them against their greatest nightmares. A balance of character classes is helpful, since the adventurers will face a variety of challenges.
What does a gothic horror adventure mean?
Plan to create a character prepared to be scared. Consider how your character reacts to being frightened and how that affects the creepy atmosphere of the adventure. Don’t consider fear a tactical disadvantage or something to be avoided. As part of playing a frightening game, you’re a participant in building and reinforcing a sense of dread for everyone at the table. If your character laughs in the face of every danger, they undermine the adventure’s threats and its broader atmosphere.
Consider courage not as the absence of fear but as the process of overcoming it. How might your character react in surprise before they rally to overcome the terror they face? Do they scream, flee, or freeze? Or might they throw themself into battle, perhaps recklessly or for too long?
Not everyone can expect to escape a horror story unscathed. While your character should do everything they can to survive and triumph over challenges, any scars they gain along the way are part of what makes the horror meaningful and memorable.
Combat may not be frequent in CoS but when it does occur it can be deadly, so players should be prepared that should their character perish, they can rejoin the campaign and have fun playing another character.
As a DM running a horror adventure my primary goal is to respect the players by running a game that is fun, fair, and tailored for them. Every player will contribute to the ongoing story and have moments to shine. When your character is talking, I will be listening.
We’ll begin with a session zero to establish hard and soft limits, share house rules, to make sure the entire group agrees on content, boundaries, and tools to keep the terror fun. Think of this as establishing a film-like rating and content warning for the story we’ll be creating. Players will build the characters they want, and together we’ll come up with explanations for how their characters came together to form an adventuring party.
To create an immersive and fun D&D experience I bring the following:
D&D Beyond Master Tier Subscription that includes additional character creation options, homebrew, encounters, and shared content to players including source books.
Cloud-hosted Foundry VTT with a dedicated high-end Jitsi server for integrated Audio/Video.
Patreon sponsor of DM Andy, James’ RPG art, MrPrimate, and Pyram King for expanded content, rich battle maps, and Foundry integration with DnDBeyond.
Professional voice-acting for assorted NPCs
Ambient music and sound effects
Discord
My experience with roleplay began with DM’ing Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. I designed and participated in LARPs (in creepy abandoned schools in Maine), have years of experience with collaborative RP in World of Warcraft. I recently played through Curse of Strahd on Foundry VTT and loved it so much I want to try my hand at DMing the adventure. I’m young at heart but am beginning to look like an old wizard.
I prefer to play Saturday or Sunday afternoons, EDT, because there are few distractions and I can bring my best to the table, but I can be flexible. Ideally, it’d be night-time for you to add to the mood – but it doesn’t have to be. I can work with the group on what time works best.
I welcome all players, new and experienced, ages 20 and older. If I can do anything in the world setting that makes it more inclusive for you, as a player, let me know privately through Discord (Keruptis.SaDiablo#1536), or in session-zero.
I do intend to mix things up, so players that have DM'd or played CoS before are certainly welcome. I have 2-3 players that have expressed interest, still need 2-3 more.
I'd like to shoot for Sunday, May 1st for session-zero -- but again, I have flexibility as to the times we actually play.
In the meanwhile, this is me impersonating Strahd (no, not one of the professional voice actors I have for NPCs). From the Tome of Strahd:
Hello, if your still looking for another player, id be up to join! haven't played CoS before, and am looking forward to it! My Discord is sonofkardsen#4772 if you want to message me.
You're so right!!! IN that case I'm very interested. I am an experienced player. Id be playing a goliath death cleric with the haunted background. I've always wanted to play this campaign! Discord is @brujoleo#3230
I don't know if you're still looking for players, but I would be interested! I've always wanted to play a horror campaign! Discord is lleuwynn#0102. I'm a grad student in a science field that exercises my creative muscles through TTRPGs. I love playing unique and interesting characters with rich backstories, and I also love playing a supporting role for my companions' stories. I live in MST, 2 hours behind you, but on a weekend that shouldn't be a huge deal! No sweat if you're full up already, but I saw this and just had to ask. :D
Would love to be part of the action, open for weekdays but I am running West Coast time. Experienced player that fit any role the party might need. Discord is co_tree#1100
Been playing DnD 5e since 2018, haven't been playing since 2020 but would love to get back into it. Was in one session for Curse of Strahd a couple years ago but the game never went forward after that, but I have been told enough about the game's story to be interested in either running it myself or participating in it. Though I would like to be roll the dice again after having been out of playing for some time.
My Discord tag is AlecVoltz#0519, my weekends are typically free, but if something comes up, I will communicate it with you.
I'm a DND veteran but completely new to online tools (discord, roll20, etc). Would love to get into a community or game that will let me gracefully stumble through tech aspects while nailing the roleplay/combat of any character/class. CDT timezone
Available on weekends and after 8PM CDT. Hope to hear from you.
As we have more potential players than slots, I will direct message each of you with a few questions:
What are the best days and times for you to play?
What do you hope to get out of the campaign and what player type are you (Actor, Explorer, Instigator, Power Gamer, Slayer, Storyteller, Thinker, Watcher)?
Do you have a favorite race or class to play?
What are your feelings on intra-party conflict?
Have you watched Critical Role? If so, what are your thoughts? Other actual play video series/podcasts?
What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about tabletop RPGs?
Is there anything else you’d like to share or think I should know?
There are no right or wrong answers here, I'm purely looking at player compatibility in terms of play style, expectations, and availability.
What are the best days and times for you to play? Free evenings after 5pm Central and weekends are wide open.
What do you hope to get out of the campaign and what player type are you? A memorable story is what I want most from a campaign. I enjoy exploring and building connections whether it's help a town form a defensive militia or form a player run business.
Do you have a favorite race or class to play? So many new ones of each, I'm open to try just about anything.
What are your feelings on intra-party conflict? It can make for good RP, but only to the point everyone is having fun. Otherwise the players need to get with the DM and work put a compromise outside the game.
Have you watched Critical Role? If so, what are your thoughts? Other actual play video series/podcasts? Very briefly. I work remotely now and so no longer spend hours a day commuting so stopped about as soon as I started.
What’s your favorite and least favorite thing about tabletop RPGs? Favorite is the RP and stories. A good game is like a good novel but you influence the story. Least? I like more open ended systems like Hero over class based ones but 5E seems vastly improved.
Is there anything else you’d like to share or think I should know? Haven't played TT in a very long time but I've a long history going back to the original D&D and more. Gamma World, Top Secret, Traveller, CoC, etc.
There are no right or wrong answers here, I'm purely looking at player compatibility in terms of play style, expectations, and availability. Bottom line? Older player, looking to RP, excited to play again, and happy to answer any questions.
