Campaign time: Noon-6PM Mountain Standard Time every Sunday
We play online, with one or two of the players sometimes in the same location. We use D&D Beyond, I have all the content and share it. We use AboveVTT. We have a Discord nitro-enabled server as well and use discord voice for the session.
One of our core players had to drop out due to RL events. Looking for someone to fill their ROLE in the party, as a long-term commitment for a lengthy campaign. If I get enough responses, or there is sufficient interest, I could open another session/campaign in the same world. Players would have the opportunity to develop custom and detailed characters of their own choosing, along with individual storylines that are meaningful and woven into the campaign.
You won’t be taking the original character over, but there is an existing backup NPC which you can take over. They are a Shard of Sardior, a sub-race of Gem Dragonborn unique to the setting. They are a Wizard 4. The main party is level 4, nearing level 5. Alternatively, you can gen a new character and I will work with you to flesh out backstory and, as with the other players, create threads and plot points specifically for you. There are world threads, regional threads, and personal threads, and together they weave a picture.
I am looking for a player who is interested in roleplay, not just rollplay. They are ideally capable of both strategic and tactical planning. Mostly they need to understand that actions, and failure to act, have consequences. They should be excited about playing a wizard and doing wizard stuff, because it connects to the main story. Respect for all players is expected. A degree of seriousness is also expected, but this campaign is not without its levity: One of the NPCs is 'The Cobalt General', a sapphire dragon who likes dancing to the tune "Thunder" by....Imagine Dragons... =P
There are puzzles, themes, hints, and truths to seek, and NPCs who can hold keys to the problems. This is no place for murderhobos or for those who just don’t care about anything but combat. There is almost always some combat in a session, but combat is not the focus, and XP is awarded whether you kill something or talk your way around it. The quest to stop the world from swinging back into chaos and darkness is the main objective of the campaign and one of the campaign BBEG's is Deathspit, an Ancient Black Dragon seeking to become a Greatwyrm who has terrorized the region and is bending other forces to his control. The party has the chance to affect the world in a major way.
The campaign world is a homebrew world called Emeril. The world setting is rich in background and story and the campaign centers around the escalating tide and struggle of good, law, chaos, and evil. It is a heroic fantasy setting, but less ‘civilized’ in most areas than most settings. The forces of ‘good’ have struggled to gain a foothold, with many cities being established only to fall to the darkness. The world has not been tamed. Dragons rule the skies (and walk among those in cities in disguise), and the denizens of the Underdark rule the depths. The world hovers around a tipping point, and the party is prophesized to play a key role in influencing the direction it heads.
This is a world where strength and cunning are required to simply stay alive. Adventurers are a cut above even the hardy people of the world. Stats generation uses Avrae Discord bot. Roll !randchar twice, if any point total is below 72(The amount of points in the standard array), reroll until you have 2 sets of 72 points or greater. Pick one set. This is to have variation but also tends to create powerful builds. Enjoy it..you're gonna need it!
(You do not need to fear playing a sub-optimal build, or ‘rolling’ poorly for stats. I even things out with bonus feats, special abilities, ‘handicaps’ for those with truly exceptional stats, and background such that all players are key participants, with content meaningful to each character)
Source materials used: Fizban's, PHB, Xanathar's, Tasha's with approval, very little homebrew but that which exists plays a key role.
PC's have feats. So can opponents. No UA. No external homebrew. Flavor mods OK with approval. We roleplay, not rollplay. No min/max or cheese classes. (Sorlock, etc.) Modified healing system, can only spend hit dice to regain health after long rest instead of short rest. Copious usage of situational modifiers. I allow and encourage PC's to try things and get inventive. Leveling rate that is 3-5 sessions per level on average. XP based, rewards for roleplaying and great ideas. (Solving story points nets you XP) Listen to Kenny Rogers. Know when to hold, when to fold, and when to run away. I am not out to 'get' the PC's but bad choices can lead to death...or worse. We are respectful to each other. Come with a sense of collaboration and teamwork. No evil characters.
I tailor the world to the characters. Whatever your objectives or goals, whatever skills and abilities you choose, there will be opportunities to use them.
Be careful what you Wish for. You might get it.
There is an entire world, and while the campaign revolves around the PC's, the world does not. There is constant change and evolution throughout the world. What affects one area may spill into another. Word spreads. Deeds have consequences. Relationships can be built with people in places high and low, and their lives have existence and meaning absent the PC's. Because the events that happen and the things people in the world do matter, so can the actions of the PCs. Perhaps your impact is small at first, but if you so choose, there is ample opportunity to affect the world.
We are all here to have FUN, including me. I am a very long time DM and player, having bought the original boxed sets and books back in '78. I prepare themes, places, encounters, and options and improvise on the fly. Sessions are a form of collaborative storytelling, and we as a campaign will weave a tale, D20's willing, of glorious trials and conquests to be told for generations to come.
Tier 1 (level 1-4) will not be permadeath threatening. Tier 2 the training wheels come off. Tier 3 and you need to play wisely. Tier 4 will challenge everything about you. At tier 4 play, you do not want to mess with a Lich. You can't kill it in a straightforward manner, it won’t face you unless it has absolute control, and it has an eternity to find you and everything you care about and twist it, destroy it or make it its own. Tier 4 is where plots are set in motion to actively set up and trap or harm PCs. Who would do that? The enemies you've earned by your actions in tier 1-3 play of course. <evil grin> For reference, Tucker’s Kobolds are Tier 2.
Hopefully all of this helps decide if this campaign is a fit for you. If you made it to this point, it may be. 😊
Hey, I'm a long time DM and part time player. I'm in the middle of running the second act of my own multiple-year high fantasy campaign, and while I love it I really miss playing! I've been poking around for a long-term game and this is the first one I've seen that works for my schedule. I also get a good feeling about the DM style here, the worldbuilding seems thorough and you touch on a lot of important themes that I try to secure in my own games such as strong cause-and-effect decision making and character/story dovetailing. You say that you have been in it since '78, and while that's a bit before my time I grew up on 2e and have found that having experience in older editions gives DMs a more immersive and challenging playstyle.
Basically, I'm really interested in this campaign and your group, and I can commit to your schedule without fear of cancelations. That being said, I don't think I can handle coming in as a character that the party is already acquainted with. I've tried doing this before and I've had players try to do it as well, it never seems to work quite right. Even a really experienced roleplayer will fail to do the character justice simply because the context isn't there for them. If that's a deal breaker, that's cool, but if it's not here's a few details about my playing style.
I favor healers and support classes heavily. Cleric is my main squeeze but I love Druid, Bard, and Paladin as well. I also am not interested in optimization, I would much rather play around with features I find interesting and help flesh out the character. I allow min-maxing in my own games (I have a resident Hexblade/Divine Soul player right now) and I think that's fine if you are into that, but just to be clear I am not. You seem to have some implementations to assist the creation of more impressive builds, so I feel like I should be clear that I greatly favor out-of-combat capability versus combat superiority, and if anything I'm more likely to play an underpowered or semi-functional character. Role-wise I usually find another party member that I vibe with and sort of latch onto them, not sure what that says about me but I enjoy the buddy dynamic and I like when the relationship between two PCs is established in a way that allows them to cohesively set up scenes for each other in regard to their own personal arcs and reactions to conflict. I am not a very energetic or boisterous personality either, so I tend to pick up the role of second-mate or straightman to a louder personality at the table. Also, I don't know if your table uses character voices but I have collected many of my own as a DM of ten years.
Anyways, I'd love to talk to you about the setting more if you think it seems a good fit. I'm LivingWormwood#4415 on Discord.
There has been enough interest that I am considering putting together a Saturday group. Same world. PM or message me on Discord if interested. It would be a ground up build, with custom story/background for everyone, all tied together and custom made for the players.
Sent a friend request on discord. I’ve recently been promoted at work and it screwed up my schedule. So I’ve recently had to bow out of our year long campaign. I’m looking for something else to jump into and a Saturday campaign sounds great
