Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online (Zoom) w/ DND Beyond and Talespire (you do not need to own TaleSpire to play) Experience: 1 Year as DM. Location/Timezone: 6 PM PT / 9 PM EST Schedule: Wednesdays, session 0 on June 22nd, then every Wednesday after that. Some flexibility in time if everyone is willing. Roles sought: 4-6 players (current count has 3), new ones welcomed. Game style: Sunless Citadel is probably the best intro to DND for new players. It is flexible to various worlds/sources. A short, straight-forward premise leads into strong description (and short combat), and then into exploration before more combat/roleplay. Extras: TaleSpire is a 3D environment generator. Players will have their tokens/avatars on the board. This is a great mix of online, but with a certain mini-on-a-tabletop feel. DM will have content sharing on before Session 0, with access to PHB, DMG, MM, TCoE, and VGtM.
2 years experience as a player. I've been running a HomeBrew game for 6+ months with fairly rave reviews. Trying to expand my DM experience by running short campaigns.
Some FAQs...
Why is it a paid game? Commitment. Even though it is a small commitment, it is an amount that makes enough people show up that the game runs. It is also such a small amount that it is easy for players to join for a first game. Payment avoids jokers whose goal is to derail the campaign, as well as keeps attendance/attention up. Payment is $5, per session, per person. Session 0 is free.
I'm new-new. What do I need to do before I start? Can I still play? Yes-yes. This campaign is great for new people, and in my opinion, better than Lost Mines of P due to a more straight-forward focus at the start that doesn't drown players in challenging combat. What you do need before starting... know your class mechanics for the first 3 levels. Know your race's history. Ask the DM what you don't know.
What is in Session 0? Session 0 is before the campaign starts. We will discuss character ideas, build them in DNDBeyond if you need help with that (and double-check when done), and then play a short practice-combat on TaleSpire so you can get a feel for rolling to attack, using spell slots, and what a typical turn in combat would look like.
What can I play as? Tales of the Yawning Portal, as I run it, takes place between worlds. You are in the edge of Eberron, or a deserted place of Forgotten Realms, etc. Some races will not be allowed because they are far off, and playing distantly against type (lawful smart orcs, beefy gnome barbarians) is discouraged. Play something fun or new to learn a new class.
What is TaleSpire? Do I need to own or sign-up for it? No. Talespire is a 3D environment software. Only the DM will need it. I will stream the TaleSpire screen to the players via Zoom.
What is Zoom? Do I need to sign-up for it? Does it cost? Yes you need to download it, but no, you do not need a pay version.
3D Simulator? Can I send you my 3D mini file from HeroForge or STL of a mini and you upload it? I can import the 3D Simulator files from HeroForge into TaleSpire at my own expense. Because this is at my own expense, I may not limit the number I can download, or propose an existing mini for your character instead of a personalized one.
Safety Precautions? 18+ is preferred but am open to younger if you hold up well during Session 0. The game is LGBTQ+ friendly and safe space. Real life racism/sexism is not allowed. Roleplaying racism by your character is allowed but only towards the drow and goblin races. NO RACISM TOWARDS OTHER PLAYER CHARACTERS. Sex themes do not fit with this campaign, and are not necessary. Be careful with how dark/graphic your backstory is. We will defer to other players comfort zone, especially given the beginner-friendly nature.
