Welcome to VerdinWeald,
This is a new homebrew setting created by me that I want to start bringing players into, a large open world with one of the key features being multiple starting points for groups of players each with unique features and storylines. Each starting point may come with some restrictions on character creation/backgrounds but if you are creative enough, we can fit it in. Currently I have three storylines ready for groups to choose from:
**Humble Beginnings** It’s that last few days for the young group of friends of Guren Village before they each leave, heading out on their own paths in life, before they part ways however there’s one final mystery in town to solve, the perfect close on this chapter of your lives. Players will create their “future” characters but start as peasants with minimum stats and a bonus or two in things that shape their path. Assuming everyone survives the opening scenario, you will all converge again after a time skip to begin the adventure proper.
**The Grand Academy of Divine and Magical Arts** Recently enrolled in the largest and most famous school of magic in the entire continent, possibly the world, players will have a relatively safer adventure, at least in the beginning, completing academy assignments, going on sponsored expeditions, while also fulfilling their duties to the school. All characters need to have innate magical ability (spell slots), be a hybrid class, gain a subclass with magical ability, or multiclass into a magical class by level 3(Failure to do so will mean expulsion). This scenario will include multiple features only available within the academy.
**The Night of Howling** Once a year a blood red moon plagues the land causing monsters to run rampant throughout the city and surroundings, all have given up on fighting it and now simply hide. When it began it lasted for only a night, but over the years it has lengthened to an indeterminable amount of time. The astrologers and oracles have converged, and the predicted time is nigh, and everyone in the region of Bolkenia and city of Harken is frantically preparing, boarding up their homes, stocking up on last minute supplies, and hiring guards as added protection. The players, all residents of the region are well used to this occurrence, but this time a mysterious benefactor has called upon them each individually to undertake a task, something that can only be done during the Night of Howling. A bit more of a dark gothic scenario and the most dangerous starting point among the options, no one should leave their homes during the Night of Howling.
About this game I want to run a game that is enjoyable for everyone that is gritty and realistic, but I will not include SH, SA, or R, and will not tolerate it from players. I will also not accept intolerance/bigotry that gets hits too close to reality (You can hate orcs for whatever reason from your backstory, but you can’t use them as a conduit to spew racism). If you want to attempt a romance with an NPC that’s fine, if you want it with another player, that’s not, unless it is fully consensual. Since this is a new homebrew setting character creation will be lenient and details you want to include for your character backstory may become canon for the world (no lvl 1 dragonslayers). Everyone will start at level 1 in any scenario, except for the Humble Beginnings, which will act more as a prologue before starting at level 1. As stated previously most races/class combos and backgrounds will be fine depending on the scenario, we can make them fit just about anywhere. This is a pay to play game with a free session 0 The scenario will be decided by the group before session 0 to give everyone time to work on their backstory. Session 0 will finalize character creation for everyone, set expectations for the game and if time willing will include an introduction into the world. Why pay-to-play? Pay to play offers a range of benefits for players. It’s a huge incentive for people to show up, be consistent, and work together. A much smaller chance of the random quitting that runs rampant in the free to play community. The fees help to maintain the roll20 membership, buying materials to be used, and the time spent building these games into an enjoyable experience for you. I will also be creating custom storylines for each PC and their ultimate objectives (will go over during character creation)

Guren Village (The starting point for the Humble Beginnings adventure) was founded over two hundred years ago by the noble, Benthal Guren, the land awarded to him for his deeds in the Heirloom wars across the great sea. wanting to live the rest of his life peacefully and have a place his family could always return to he built his estate and slowly the community neighboring him. Over time a thriving village was born, with the magnanimous Guren at its head.
Now the Guren line has long since abandoned the place, leaving the estate in tatters, no one willing to claim it, the village still lives though, with only one or two minor noble families who take up residence there, the peaceful farming community has little care for the outside world save for the taxes and produce to send to the capital.
For at least 200 years Bolkenia has been plagued by the red moon, now lasting for an indeterminable amount of days, few remember a time before the red moon when Bolkenia was a thriving country, rich in resources and trade, but now the mountain passes are closed and the citizens are barred from leaving the region, the people must simply endure. A night when the dead wake, dark waves of ghosts and specters head inland from the surrounding shield mountains to circle the kingdom for the duration.
It is not only the undead however, all manner of beast and monster also emerge to terrorize the surrounding countryside, occasionally finding their way into Harken as well.
The poor people can only hide, barring their doors and windows, hoping their provisions will last them through their waking nightmare, that is the life for the common people while the wealthy enjoy their time holding lavish parties while armed guards and powerful wards keep any monsters at bay.
