I think I know the basics of how DND works, and I know how to make a character sheet, but a bit of an explanation of what yours will be would be nice, because I have never actually done a real DND game?

I help run an open world multi-user dungeon (MUD), which is a multiplayer real-time open world. The server is playable 24/7, and it isn't “play by post” in the tradition sense since it's all semi-autonomous. It's run by Avrae Bot, so no real Dungeon Masters, and no sessions. It's completely played on Discord, and you can use DNDbeyond, gsheets, or dicecloud for character creation. Literally play whenever you want, how you want, where you want (bc its discord) and even how you want. Combat and roleplaying are optional, meaning you can do both or just one at a time.
