I’m not sure how exactly to go about looking for a group or a DM for what I want, but I’ll try to be brief and clear.
I recently played a campaign with some friends and acquaintances that took our characters from levels 1-8. All told, so many things went wrong interpersonally both in character and out, but I stuck with it because it was my first game and I didn’t have a frame of reference for what was normal and what wasn’t okay. Party members betrayed and bullied me constantly, the DM put my character through situations that mirrored real life traumatic experiences she knew I’d had, and any time I wanted to do something, I was shouted down or other players were suddenly given magical items just to stop me from doing said things. It’s hard to all lay out without just sounding whiny or overdramatic, but it was a supremely upsetting time and took a lot out of me to the point I quit TTRPGs for a long while. I legit still cry about being singled out, and about having my wounds deliberately picked at, if I’m being honest. The DM used the whole consent in TTRPG tools, then turned them against at least three of us and seemed rather gleefully sadistic and closed off to feedback, leaving folks wounded and powerless to enact change beyond abandoning the campaign.
What I WANT is a healthy environment to revisit my character with more agency and with my boundaries respected, and the opportunity to actually touch on themes I’d find enjoyable or intriguing. I’ve got tons of backstory for her based on the events of the first campaign, so I’ve got plenty of material to inspire homebrewing campaigns or modifying existing ones. She’s a CG Tiefling Wizard with a brief dip in Cleric that I may or may not explore more, for a short overview.
I recently heard of the concept of duet games, and I’d be open to that if you’re familiar, or I’d be willing to join a better behaved and more collaborative party for a more traditional campaign, so long as folks can all get along. I prefer to play with other LGBT folks, or people that aren’t weird and shitty about it. I’m very happily gay as Hell, and so is my character.
My schedule is pretty much wide open, though I’m fairly nocturnal. I’m in the PST time zone, but I’m flexible. Last I checked, the DnD Beyond app didn’t really play nicely with iPads, which is all I’ve got, so we’d have to migrate to some other service if that’s chill.
Hopefully there’s something out there I’d be a fit for!
That really sucks, I"m sorry to hear about your toxic experience. You don't sound whiny, that's a horrible thing to be stuck in, good work for finlly getting out of it.
I run a server which is in it's infancy which aims to get noobs some more game time and build a nice community. I'm on the look out for a new DM as one just dropped out, is what it is, but you should join anyway whilst we find one, and when the next game is posted, if the time works for you then you can join.
you can use the same character if it fits the brief, or make a new one, totally up to you. hope to see you there https://discord.gg/eCjTrq2
Respectfully, that sounds like a lot of gambling and maybes, though I appreciate the invite. I’ll consider, but I’d definitely prefer something more solid before I get my hopes up.
