Experienced DM looking to start a play by post group on Discord. I am creating a game mechanic that is meant to be played anytime and anywhere using your phone or computer. This is a game you can play during downtime at work, at home, or at school. It requires minimal effort, but a lot of imagination and strategy. This game will not be primarily talking with medieval sounding words and phrases. Instead I intend to create a play by post game with plenty of action and adventure. I am extremely reliable in responding to players and keeping everyone involved. My games generally last several years (in real life). Here is my proposed game mechanic:
Non-combat turns will be gathered on a weekly basis (and correspond to a day in game time)
Combat turns will be gathered on a daily basis when the group is involved in combat (and correspond to one combat round in game time)
Turns will be processed more quickly if all party members turn in actions for the turn. So if we are in combat and everyone responds with an action in a few minutes, the turn will be processed and combat can move on to the next turn without waiting for a full day. We can schedule combat sessions for days when more players are available more often if that works. But basically if you check in once a week and submit an action, that works for non-combat and if you check in once a day during combat, that will work.
If a player does not turn in an action in one week, or in one day during combat, that player's character will take a default action. Players can choose default actions for cities, towns, countryside, fresh water, ocean, dungeon, etc, or for combat, melee, ranged, stealth, etc. If there is no default action selected for a character in a particular situation, that character will take no action for that turn. Once a player responds with actions again, the character will stop taking default actions.
I am planning on using Shadow of the Dragon Queen with standard D&D 5e rules including Feats. This is to allow and encourage beginning players and those interested in classic adventures. I have not used this campaign before which makes it interesting to me as well. Plus there is a lot of lore available for the campaign background.
I thought maybe you might be concerned about my ability to write or how I would manage the game so I have included a photo of some miniatures in a dungeon setting. It is my intention to use pictures for monsters (obtained from D&D Beyond, the module, or the Internet) as well as actions scenes composed of miniatures, condition markers, and map components. I may also draw some maps but I am not great at drawing monsters or characters. My maps are quite good though. During combat I will use miniatures and send pictures showing changes in the scene. I have a huge set of miniatures.
I see that it is difficult to post a picture in this forum, so I have added the picture and some descriptive text I have written to my Twitch About page here: https://www.twitch.tv/davidcampbell2313/about
That will have to suffice, but take a look just to be sure about how I will handle the posts from my end. Please respond if you have any interest or if you have any questions. I will look for about ten players and then I will begin. Other players can join later if they have an interest. I hope it works out and goes ahead.
Hi, I love PBP games, but am pretty new to online gaming. I'm super creative, chill, funny and generally have cool characters. I enjoy teamwork and try to stay in the spirit of the game. I have used D&D beyond but not discord so would need some coaching on how to use that. Let me know if I can potentially join.
Yes, it sounds like you would be a good fit. Discord is just a place where we can post things as in a forum, but it will be easier to find and retain our thread. Plus I can add pictures easily.
I need some more players to be interested before I can start, so let others know if you know anyone who might be interested. I think it will be fun but easy to do with a phone or a computer. I have played online and I also teach online so I know it will work out.
I enjoy playing a paladin or cleric the most. I have a discord account but have probably used it twice so would need some help. Do use D&D beyond but don't have a subscription.
I'm a relatively new player. I have lots of experience with DnD 3.5 but only a little with dnd 5E. I'm new to play by post, however, with my work schedule it's the only viable option for me to enjoy ttrpg at the moment. I've typically ran Frontline fighters/tanks and so am interested in trying a more "complex" support class. You seem to have the experience and knowledge that I will need in a DM as I begin play by post. I am someone who is really interested in narrative character/team development and love a great story. I'm hoping you can find room for me in your team of players :)
If you’re still in need of more players, I’m new to this style of play, but I’d like to get started soon. I don’t personally know anyone that plays, so this is one of the options available that I researched. Please let me know if I can join. Thanks!
If you're still looking for players, please hit me up -- DMing me here is the best way. I'm an experienced rper and prefer pbp over everything, being a much better writer than voice actor.
Hi! I've never played PBP before, but have played in a few 5e online campaigns. I would love to continue playing as my current campaign is not as consistent as I would like. PBP seems like a really cool option. I can be reached on Discord at littlesunbear#0467.
You won't need a subscription to D&D Beyond, although it is a great tool, even without a subscription. I am trying to keep the game as open as possible. Discord would be required though. It seems pretty simple and I will help if necessary.
Pynus - sounds good. I think this would be a great platform for experimenting with different classes. DnD 5e is very similar to 3.5 (the 4th edition was really different). D&D Beyond has easy tools for making 5e characters.
Ragnor - sounds good. I think this will be a great introduction to playing. You won't need to have any rules memorized or anything. I will help you set up the actions available to your character if necessary. You will need either some dice or a dice roller. D&D Beyond includes a dice roller if you make a character there.
So far I count 7 possible players. When it gets to 10 I will go forward.
Sorry I sounded like an advertisement for D&D Beyond in some cases. I have a lot of experience with it, but I want people to know that I am open to a variety of platforms or just pen and paper for the character sheets. I won't need to see them unless you want me to. You will need dice or a dice roller though.
I have played D&D for a while, and have played most classes. I haven't played this format, but I'm on discord all the time, and very interested in joining a new group. If there is still room, I would love this idea.y discord is Genghis#4024.

I have a few questions about the system, but I'm interested! My discord is Mantis Lord 3#9539
Looking forward to hearing from you!

New to DnD but this seems interesting, I'd be willing to join if you don't mind a new new blood. I'm and should get better as time goes on.

Pothound - sounds good to me. If your name means anything this game should be compatible with your lifestyle.
Psitoxin - sounds good. I would say that good writing skills would be welcome. Should keep the game interesting. I don't do voices well either.
Sunbear - OK, I am adding you on Discord. I think this will be a good game option for a lot of people.

I'd be down for this if there's still an opening. Never done play-by-post before specifically, so I wanna give it a whirl.
