Hello! I am a 19 year old who wants to try his hand at DM'ing. I've gotten some tips from experienced DMs and I think I have an idea of how to be a DM. I want to try running a one shot and would like if I had some players who are either new to DND or don't have too much experience.
Edit: The "plan" as of now is to play over discord since that has worked out for me as a player in the past. I'm open to different times and day depending on the players that are interested but I don't have anything set in stone just yet. I'm still working out specific details on my own like what encounters to have but I figured it couldn't hurt to ask about who's interested early on
Hey, I'd love to play. I'd describe myself as an intermediate player/dm. I currently run a game with long time dms, and I, like you, thought to start out with a one shot. My advice based on my experience is to not do this. Instead you should consider finding a short pre-made campaign to run. Something that will take 3-5 sessions to finish up. There are several here on beyond for free.
The reason I recommend this course of action is because one shots are actually one of the most difficult kinds of games to run. Tying up a cohesive story of any kind in a matter of hours usually takes experience. Otherwise you will likely end up just running combat, (which is perfectly acceptable if your goal is just to learn the ins and outs of combat, although if that's the case I'd recommend a pvp arena style game for your first time.) Anyway, whether I end up playing or not I hope this advice helps you in some way.
If you're interested in having me as a player please feel free to send me a private message on here.
I disagree with this One shots do not need to have any story or plot. This is your game to learn and gain experience as a DM and that's what it should be and as long as your players know this they should not expect a deep intricate involved game. It will likely be very basic mostly combat. Your first sessions as a DM you have to build the foundation of your game. You need to figure out how you track and manage your initiative as well as character stats and abilities as well as the monster stats. I assume you will be using a voice chat and probably some vtt. The first time DM'ing will be focused alot on learning the vtt you are using. When players roll dice are you doing it throught D&D beyond character sheets are they imported into another application, discord bot or the vtt you are using.
For your first DM session I highly recommend going with a one shot. It is much easier to get the number of players you want in one session than it is to get them committed to multiple sessions. If you know these players in person it's one thing if these are random people that from the Looking for Group forum you will have diminishing returns for every additional session.
So you have your session ready you have your map ready all the character tokens are on the board the monster tokens are ready and you have all the monster stat sheets ready to go and the session starts. You're expecting 5 player but now only 3 show up. So now all of the encounters you prepared and now messed up. What are you going to do now?
Point is multiple sessions will require more player management which is hard when you don't know anything about the people who you invited to your game. It's much easier when you have experience with the players you are playing with, you have a much better idea of their commitment and engagement.
For a brand new DM having a session where you are expecting 5 players but the game time comes and only 2 show up is a nightmare scenario.

Thank you for your recommendation and your response! However, I still want to run a one shot because then I can get the feel for running a quick game and players (and I) don't have to make the weekly commitment to a game. Like I said in my edit, I'm still working out the specifics on my one shot. I probably should have figured out more details earlier, but I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in playing first.
