You were a figure of great renown, spoken of in reverent whispers and hushed tones. Some may have remembered you as a towering tyrant, others as a fabled saint. To many, you were a revered hero, but to others, a reviled villain. Regardless of your life's narrative, your legacy was indisputable, and your influence unparalleled within the epoch in which you lived.
But when your saga was brought to an end by unforeseen circumstances, and Death came knocking on your door to lay his claim upon your soul, you refused to accept your fate. Instead, you challenged the reaper’s authority to a contest of might, magic and wit, emerging victorious on your own terms. Your triumph earned you a momentary reprieve from his grasp, banishing you to purgatory, a realm reserved for souls long forgotten by the other planes.
But alas, your escape came at a heavy price, for even as you fled the clutches of death himself, he siphoned from your very soul great chunks of vital essence. In that fleeting moment, he stripped you of much of the strength and power that you had once held in life, leaving you weakened and vulnerable in the face of whatever trials and challenges lay ahead.
Now in this in-between world, you feel an overwhelming sense of disorientation. The air is thick with a palpable tension, and a ghostly mist obscures the horizon in every direction. The denizens of this plane are no ordinary souls; they are beings of immense power and unspeakable knowledge, and they regard you with a mixture of curiosity and disdain.
As you delve deeper into purgatory's mysteries, you will discover that there were other souls who had challenged the reaper and emerged victorious, just as you had. They are scattered throughout the realm, each one an enigmatic figure with a unique story to tell. Some are benevolent guides, willing to share their knowledge and aid you in your journey. Others are treacherous deceivers, seeking to exploit your weaknesses and claim your power for themselves.
Although your fate has now become shrouded in ambiguity, one thing is now more certain than ever.
Death's tribulation will have to wait, for your final odyssey is only just beginning.
I am looking for 5 sensible players for a dark fantasy campaign that takes place in purgatory. A premade group would be fantastic.
I prefer to DM at a fast pace so experienced players would be preferred. The campaign will most likely be rather combat-focused with a 45/30/25 split in terms of Combat/Exploration/Roleplay
