Game: D&D 5e Group type: Face-to-face Experience: veteran (new players welcome, I have been introducing players to gaming for a couple of decade and am perfectly happy to have new players in the mix ) Location/Timezone: West Bloomfield, MI Schedule: Weekly (aspirationally, I've got a kid and family stuff so I think we'll be doing good to get 30 sessions a year, semi-weekly though would be fewer than I would like after the inevitable need to cancel some sessions for other commitments)
Seeing how quickly my last ad went many pages back I decided to post something that would show up more easily in search results.
I've been playing for many years but this is going to be the first in person group I put together since moving to Michigan. Last game I ran lasted two years but that was another state. Tried online gaming but decided it wasn't for me and then didn't want to commit to a group until my daughter was old enough that I was sure I could get a reliable time slot.
I run my games in a collaborative, spontaneous, character driven style. I try to incorporate character goals and backgrounds into my story lines. I emphasize role play a bit but I can also put together a decent combat encounter. I tend no to do classic dungeon crawls though I sometimes use urban or wilderness environments to a similar effect.
I like to involve my players in setting creation, I think it makes the game more fun for everyone and comes up ideas that I would not have on my own. At session zero I will go through a few prompts to establish facts about the setting and provide a framework for how players can add lore as we go forward.
To throw out a different game idea from the last, this one is set in a post-apocalyptic fantasy world inspired by 4X strategy games, specifically Dominions but borrowing from others as well, and the late bronze age collapse. In this setting the gods have physical form and have periodically had wars where old gods are destroyed, mortals have no idea why this conflict happens. There have been many previous cycles where civilization was destroyed by these conflicts only to rise again. For this campaign a new iteration of this war has just ceased and characters will be trying to fix the damage. Most civilizations have been destroyed, with the remnants either being small and isolated or having made pacts with dangerous beings to survive. Global enchantments, such as one that causes the dead to rise every night unless buried on hallowed ground, are in effect and part of the campaign will be breaking these spells.
I have three potential starting points. One is loosely based on classical Athens and the players will be exiles with a ship, this campaign will emphasize exploration around the Mediterranean. A second is loosely based on Scythian culture, characters will have found an artifact from an ancient hero of their people and hints of where to find more. This will be an exploration and more traditional dungeon crawl kind of setting. Third would be Mesopotamia where the various city states made pacts with demonic entities to survive and have to engage in sacrifices to placate the creatures they summoned. Players will have discovered evidence that an organization exists that has powers against demons and will try to find out more about it to combat the infernal powers that dominate their city.
Game will take place at my house. Friday or Saturday evenings preferred, though I could probably make Sundays work. Session zero will take place at a local bar, I have one in mind but am open to suggestions (I don't get to bars very much any more with a young child at home so am not exactly up to date with the best spots). This will let us meet each other and satisfy my wife's request that I don't have complete strangers in the house. Send me a message or reply to the thread for more details.
