Game: D&D 5e Group preferred: play by post Experience: veteran; almost 40 years of experience running and playing every edition (except 4th) plus lots of other ttrpgs Location/Timezone: San Antonio, TX/central time Availability: I’m online most of the time and very active in pbp games Preferred role: Player Game style: We’ve all been there. Play by post players just ghosting the game. You get all the commitments upfront. But none of it matters. Whether it’s the crushingly slow pace, real life issues, or a general lack of enthusiasm and engagement, the game breaks apart. Posts get farther and farther apart. And bing bang boom the game is dead.
I don’t know if there is a solution to this other than the players being established. I’m hoping there’s a group like this that is looking to add a player that’s a lot like Rick Astley. Never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you.
I’d want a group that is open and sensitive to personal triggers, LGBTQ-friendly, and generally tolerant. I am personally a cisgender white male who doesn’t really have a lot of specific triggers, but I try to be sensitive and caring and generally appreciate gaming with others who have similar predilections.
I’m looking for a game that’s fun to play. Light hearted. Humorous, even. Action, horror, whatever, just mix it up with some fun. I want a group of players that take roleplaying seriously, who like to write, and who follow the philosophy that playing D&D is not about figuring out what you need to do to “win” at the challenges but rather making in-character choices that don’t shy from actively fly in the face of success. Not saying I want everyone to be a Leeroy Jenkins but I think it’s more fun when you create your character and their motivations in a way that his choices aren’t always going to line up with success. The most important thing for me is ENTERTAINMENT. So we should be entertaining each other with writing, joking, content.
I subscribe to the James D’Amato school of RPG thought. This includes the idea of improv, yes and thinking, in openly communicating character arcs to each other as players so we can all help each other improve the experience of all the players, and linking motivations, histories, and goals (not necessarily aligning goals, because sometimes its interesting when your friends goals are at odds with your own).
I’m really interested in doing something out of the box and I’m a fan of oddball, wacky mashups. I even came with a list of starter ideas (though this is not exhaustive and also in no way mandatory):
Scoobythulu: a surprisingly workable mashup. The mix of psychological, cosmic horror and stupid Hanna Barbara scooby doo style investigations is a romp. Could do our own takes on the scooby gang or just make a group of adventurers.
Scoobyloft: see above - I have a belief that this mashup works. I would say this one should use the existing Scooby Doo characters, either taking them out of time as modern Fred, Velma, Daphne, Shaggy, and Scooby or making fantasy versions of those characters. Reframing each of the sections of the module as Scooby-style mysteries is a must.
Ravenpulp - a pulp sci-fi version of Ravenloft. I think this would be immensely fun. Could use Spelljammer rules or just make your own Flash Gordon style pulpy setup.
D&D Space Opera - while I love the concept of Spelljammers, the way it is setup leaves something to be desired. I think a straight up space opera setup could work really well for a campaign. Throw in some zany Guardians of the Galaxy vibes, and you’re on your way to something really unique.
Willow-esque - the Disney+ Willow series, to me, hits a great mark. High levels of fantasy fun, just a tad over the top, some humor, interesting characters that intertwine with each other, and a hint of modern references (and a modern rock soundtrack). Can someone duplicate this? Just some classic fantasy adventure that’s not overly complicated with customized races, super-specific classes, etc.
“All One Thing” campaign - I’m intrigued by the idea of everyone playing either the same class or the same race. I think it opens up some interesting areas to explore a culture or the variations in a particular class. Another way to do this is some 5e version of the “team characters” concept from the old Palladium Games TMNT RPG.
Alien Invasion - there’s a whole subgenera of alien invasion/encounter media that take a medieval/fantasy world and has aliens come and invade/colonize/crash. I find this concept intriguing.
Anyway, if you’re picking up what I’m putting down, hit me and let’s see if we can get something going.

Do you do live discord play? Don’t have too much dedicated time to sit down and play play.

Pbp is pretty much what I can commit to. But I don’t want to cramp your style if you’re playing live. Probably difficult to mix the two.
I’m interested but I know my requirements are limiting.
