I am looking for people to figure this out with me. I have been bouncing between here and roll20 in the looking for players sections. I have reached out to a lot of people. Lots of people have reached out to me. There have been a ton of nice people and interesting experiences. There also has been a lot of confusing and some very awkward experiences. I am an old school DnD DM. Started out with 1st edition with a set my dad bought me at a yardsale. It sparked my interest and I got fully on board with 2nd edition. I became pretty much the main DM for my group in maybe 7th or 8th grade and played all through high school. I joined the military not long out of school and goodbye roleplaying. Then I stepped in a time warp and it is 2023. I got my daughter into 5e last Christmas and we had been kinda loosely playing. This summer I have really been putting my nose in the books and learning and running a campaign with my wife and kid. Been having a blast. I want more but I decided years ago to move way out in the woods and have no friends.
The best way to really learn is to do. So I have been trying to be a player. About a month ago I started the journey into online DnD. I have no idea what I am doing. Beyond, roll20, discord, avrae, all the different software, all the different tabletops, different editions, different homebrew, different safety rules(I will get back to this), different time zones, and so many different ways to play. I have been watching videos and reading up a bunch. Been joining any group that would take me. Made a bunch of posts and responses. I am still in some groups and I am being the best sponge I can be. The technology has gotten ahead of me and it is really ruining my immersion in some cases. Misplacing a quote thing or period instead of an exclamation point to roll a perception check and spending 2 minutes to see what I did wrong is frustrating. I can see it being fun if I learned the language and I am not yucking anyone's yum. I am just having a hard time. I have also found ways to link them so my rolls from beyond can go into discord and roll20 (which I have yet to have a successful encounter). I am learning and won't give up but...
Some beds are too hard and some beds are too soft though. I think the only way to really find the sweet spot is to do what I like the best. Drive the bus. Be a DM. The problem is that I am not looking for a group in the traditional sense. I am looking for some people to run experiments with me. Test the technology in ways that doesn't f-up the connection to the other players and the game. I need honest people who are willing to put in the work to find just right. I will be honest. I think "Just Right" is a forever journey. This is a group that I am hoping will grow legs and walk around.
For now I am trying to make a page on discord because that seems the easiest way to communicate with a group. Communication is going to be key. Eventually this group is going to have a lot of fun together but everyone needs to be open and honest. No DnD is better than bad DnD. This game has become a lot more popular which is great but it is suffering from growing pains. We roleplayers are kind of a vulnerable community. Making social connections can been difficult and many of us are shy or don't know how to communicate our wishes clearly. This brings up the safety rules. I found some groups are very open about what goes on in their groups. Is it PG or R? What triggers some folks? What things are you wanting to roleplay or which things make you uncomfortable.
I stumbled into one group where the DM wasn't open about it and if I was a thinner skinned person and totally new to RP then I probably would not have continued trying to join groups after that one. That sucks. Not on my watch. Whatever freaky stuff people want is fine as long as they are open and it is with consenting adults. So anything people in the group consents with, the group gets. I don't like running flirting or sexual stuff and have always been a fade to black kind of guy when that stuff comes up. It is cool if that is your thing, but it isn't mine. Sorry but you won't find that my campaign. You want to RP chopping some freaking heads off and overthrowing a corrupt government, sure, I can dig it, but no kissing.
There will be lots of discussion. Lots of planning. Lots of sharing resources. I am positive if I get any traction at all there will still be people in and out of the group and that is fine. For the foreseeable future I am going to putting a whole lot of effort into this. We will be running all kinds of stuff. I am very creative and open to trying new things. I am also getting older and for whatever reasons I think it is making me even more stupid. Something about old dogs and tricks. I am stubborn though so I will keep trying until I get it. It just takes a while sometimes.
OK. I will wrap this up with some initial requirements and information. Remember I have some tech problems but I am learning, so don't expect greatness. Expect pretty okness without to much ego so you can tell me if I am doing something wrong.
Discord: inbeforefall #9390 (Do I even need to put this number?)
I am a 43 Male. I swear a lot. I am married and have 1 child. I am straight but I am Ally. I don't care what or who you are. Treat others the way you wish to be treated. If I see something I don't like I guarantee I will say something and please do the same. We are all dumb dumbs, but if we work together we are stronger.
I am on EST time. Scheduling will obviously be part of future conversations.
MUST: Be willing to do video. Voice and Text are not enough. I need to see your faces. I have been having technical issues on my end and I want to experient to get it right, but seeing people is key to this RPing thing. This is one thing I am going to be very set on. We can interact with voice and/or text with side RP or just chat, but games will be with video. Zoom, Google, IDK, whatever works the best.
Learning: I am learning 5e and am cool with homebrew. I believe a solid foundation is important though. You must know the rules in order to break them properly. I love fantasy, but things need to make sense. Some things are still impossible. I don't care home many NAT 20s you rolled.
We will session zero early and we will session zero often. This group will share personal things with each other. Roleplaying is a sensitive thing and I can't do it with people I don't feel comfortable with. This is about trying new ways to play this awesome game, but it should also be about making connections to actual human beings. Something I have a difficult time with so don't feel like you are alone in it if you do too. I am excited about this. Be excited with me.
Read your post and I'm curious to see what could be put together. I've got a similar background and have been looking to get back into RPGs. Haven't played since the 90s and technology has come a long way since then. I'll reach out to you on Discord.
I was able to get the page linked to some folks after I was sending the wrong link. See, already learning stuff. More are welcome as I build this thing.
Hey. Similar age/background here, used to play AD&D when i was a kid. Got away from it for a couple decades cause life and the social stigmas of the late 80s/early 90s. Army, then working in tech. Got back into 5e about 5 years ago, both in person and online. Think i could be helpful, i'm pretty tech savvy and have used most of the popular VTT and comms software out there and have a pretty good feel for what works and doesn't.
Looks like I found a group like me! Just came back in June and did some VTT games. Mostly good experiences but I grew up before the internet was created so it's a little weird. I'm good with Discord voice, video & chat. Used roll20 and d&d beyond.
The group has grown a bit more and we are having some good discussion. I have found a way, I think, that I may be able to practice running some stuff might be slightly different than what I have seen so far. Once again, this is in its experimental stage, so come ready to talk about how to play. Run some tests on different ideas we have had. It won't be a solid campaign yet. We are still looking for active folks who want to try some out stuff.
I'm interesting in joining this experiment. I'm in my early fifties. I played when I was in high school in the 80s, then life got in the way. I recently started playing again with an onsite group in Philly where I was living at the time. It was a blast but I had to leave that group when I relocated to Florida earlier this year. I am interested in finding an online group to play with. I would need to figure out the technology too. I will send you a message on Discord.
Howdy folks. I think that maybe one more plug and a few more for now and maybe our little corner will be ready for some action in the upcoming weeks. We have cut through some of the layers of the experiment and this is where we stand. I am holding onto needing a webcam for play but folks are welcome to join the page and chat without one but actual gameplay requires us to be able to see each other. Looks the platform we will be using is Owlbear Rodeo. I want the play to be balanced with roleplay and combat, but I don't want the focus to be on a VTT. I want the focus to be on us interacting and the VTT will be used for tactical stuff and then back to looking at each other when we talk. I am trying to get as close to what a home game feels like as possible.
I have written a training one off to get us moving into actual play testing but I want to make sure I have a few more fully committed to playing people before I really toss myself into fully campaign writing mode. There will be a period where we all get to know each other before we jump into playing. I believe it is very important to build trust first and have at least 1 good solid session 0. You want to come and learn with us and socialize that is great. You want to come play that is even better. Please reach out to me on discord and we will get the ball rolling.
39 year old who started playing 32 years ago. Been playing on and off through the years. I am quite familiar with both 5th edition and different VTT's. Personally mostly used Foundry and Roll20 myself, but I have had a couple of sessions in Owlbear rodeo as well before.
The road block for me is I live in Norway, so time zone difference of 5 or 6 hours, but I do stay up quite late at night, so maybe it's possible to find a time slot that still works. But if not, I'll simply bow out, no problem.

I'm looking for a group currently to either do a oneshot or have a long campaign with, I'll send a friend request on Discord.

I'm in my forties as well, and also have had mixed results with some of the servers out there.
I'm also very much aligned with your preferences. Will be in touch soon!
Sent you a friend request on Discord :)
