Whispers of war have reached your ears. A fleet of elves has been seen. Dwarves have come out of their mountain kingdoms searching for something. Dark figures in cloaks have been reported on the roads. And rangers are reporting that droves of goblins, ogres, and barbarians are on the march.
You have grown up on the continent of Ansalon, a world without gods. Or at least without gods anymore. Magic - which gets its power from the three moons - of any kind is mistrusted by most and war is so common that steel is often more valuable than gold.
A deep stirring within you has driven you to seek justice in a maddened world.
Millenia ago, Huma Dragonbane defeated Takhisis - Temptress, She of the Many Faces, Dragon Queen - and her chromatic dragons, banishing them from the world. To maintain balance, the metallic dragons went into seclusion.
More than three centuries ago, the gods, angry with the mortals for their hubris and disrespect for freedom of others, destroyed the empire of Istar, its Kingpriest, and much of world of Krynn along with it.
The gods have since been silent.
What will you do? How will you rise to the occasion? Will you seek out the old gods? Forge ahead with lunar magic? Join the Knights of Solamnia? Play as a wanderlusting kender, a haughty Silvanesti elf, a mad scientist gnome, a complicated human, a rare half-elf, a grudge-holding dwarf? Take up arms, wands, and whatever else you can find and fight for the freedom of Ansalon. And, ultimately, the entire world of Krynn.
Some housekeeping items to understand
This is a Monday-Friday play-by-post game on Discord that uses Roll20 as well. Beginners are welcome. I love to see some old heads on my server, too. For those that love Dragonlance, don't worry: I run a faithful to the lore game. Obviously I make mistakes, but the attempt is for faithfulness.
What does that mean?
Magic is distrusted almost everywhere.
The Knights of Solamnia are distrusted but honorable.
Alignment matters. I am the first to admit that the alignment system isn't perfect. But the fact is that it is important in Dragonlance games.
Mountain dwarves are rare.
Wild elves are rare.
Half-elves are rare.
There are no orcs (although I have a reskinned Goliath with a few minor changes for people wanting to play a half-ogre).
Drow, halflings, tieflings, and dragonborn don't exist.
If you are playing a divinely powered character (druid, cleric, paladin, Celestial warlock, etc...) your character will be surprised when they cast a spell, channel divinity, etc. for the first time.
This isn't to be heavy-handed or a grognard. This is to respect people that love the Dragonlance lore and want to play in that world, not Faerun-cum-Ansalon with a different pantheon.
Required (links below)
Be willing to play a heroic character. The character can be flawed, or oddly motivated, of course. But this is a war against all-encompassing evil.
Free Discord Account
Free Roll20 Account (and have a basic understanding of using it)
Have read (at a minimum) Basic Rules Chapters 7, 9, and 10 (a total of about 20 pages).
Optional
Microphone for occasional in-game use (when and if you want to record what your character is saying or singing or sounding like)
Experienced players can create their own characters ahead of time.
Point buy, standard array, or (what I strongly suggest for the fun of it) roll. If you roll, do so in Discord with me. If your rolled result would give you 3 or more leftover points in a point buy, you can roll again.
When you join, I'll give you access to the books I have (not all of the books that are published, but a lot of them). This will allow you to the Dragonlance choices in the book.
If you don't choose a background that gives you a feat (such as the Knight of Solamnia background, and the Mage of High Sorcery background), add either Tough or Skilled to your first level character.
Your character must be willing to be a hero. In some form of the word. We are fighting ultimate evil and chaos and I'm just not down with evil characters. If you really want to play a tragic/evil arc with your character, let me know ahead of time. We will have a new character prerolled for you and privately talk about when the heel turn will be. You can have all of the fun of doing that, and then you'll have created an NPC that you could probably come guest-run from time to time (I wouldn't charge for that, obviously).
You are encouraged to join the Discord server ahead of making your character and talking to the other players about their characters so that you can make some interesting choices based on theirs.
Newer players that join before Tuesday night can schedule a one-on-one session with me during the free first week to create their characters.
Or, they can use a pregenerated character. Anyone can use one of those, actually. Even experienced players.
I am obliged to tell you that you can only sign-up to play this game with me through the startplaying.games link below. So please do so.
The first week is free. So if you sign up and think I'm a smelly jerk face with toes that click, you can skate and there will be no skin off of anyone's back.
I don't think you'll find that. My reviews speak for themselves (you can see them at that link, too).
I hope to see you on Discord!
