As mentioned in the thread title, this is a homebrew world with the full pantheon of D&D gods and Goddesses. I will add the campaign concept below and if you are interested in joining a potentially long term pbp game, then please continue reading.
The setting is early world. As a note, because it is a relatively new world, magic items will be extremely rare. There are better chances for wizards and other magic users to make magic items than to find them in this world.
Background:
The gods have left mortals to rule themselves 500 years ago. Few mortals live who remember the rule of the gods and fewer still who even walked with and spoke with them. These few are mostly elves, though a few dwarves and gnomes might be old enough to remember.
Everyone believes the gods left because mortals grew tired of being ruled by immortal gods and wished to rule themselves. They believe mortals wished to have a chance to gain power and authority as well as wealth, and fame. The gods met with mortal delegations and discussed details of their departure. In the end, this departure of the Gods was the birth of clerics and Paladins. This period became known as The Sundering as the gods left, cutting themselves off from the mortal world of Xilantris.
With the departure of the gods, magical artifacts became extremely rare. Most artifacts had been created by gods, and to maintain balance and avoid world destruction, the gods took them when they left. Some wizards have been experimenting with the creation of magical items, but these are few and far between.
Current time:
As the years have passed, lies, rumors, and promises of wealth, fame, power, slaves, and all major of falsehoods have spread. These lies are corrupting the souls of mortals across the land. As the corruption spread, twisted creatures began to appear. Mortals grew horns, tails, and wings while their skin changed color. Other creatures have begun to appear, these creatures seem to lead the mortals who have twisted into grotesque forms. No one knows what they are or how to fight them as their numbers continue to rise.
Voices echo in dreams, shadows move that shouldn't, men and women are seduced and many are falling prey to the spreading evil.
As the numbers grow, many races have begun discussing alliances to fight the twisted creatures that are corrupting everything they seem to touch.
In recent weeks, towns and cities have been attacked and destroyed. Armies are sent out, and few ever return. The first major attacks fell on the eastern shores of the continent, Olios. Now, they have spread to all corners.
(These details are typed on a phone so they are only the bare minimum. The full concept and lore will be provided in the discord for those who are chosen.)
There are some few limitations I am making due to the campaign setting. I am not going to allow Tieflings because this time period is the creation of the first tieflings. In this setting, they are going to be evil as they are mortals, twisted by corruption.
Wizards will have great opportunity in this game as it is set in a time when enchanting magic items is just being figured out, and magic items are rare for even the most common of items.
Current party consists of a Fighter, Artificer, and Forge Cleric.
If you have read this far, and are interested, reply on this post with the following details.
Character Name
Race
Class
Short RP. {This takes place before you depart for the life of adventure... Choose one of the moments below, and RP the moment.} <You awake to a scratching sound within your room. Attempts to light a candle fail as the flame will not catch.> <Reaching a mineshaft deep underground, there is a loud crack above you, dust and debris begin falling.> <Standing in a forest, bow in hand, hidden by the shadows of the canopy, you watch a stag bend down to drink from the spring.> <The streets alight with torches, a single bandit holds his knife, demanding your coin.>
Other details will be asked via pm. Ability scores will be discussed as well.
I look forward to your responses. I will close this thread on Saturday, the 2nd of September.
I think I'd be interested in joining your game! As it happens, I am a forever GM and been itching to get to do some roleplay with a dedicated character rather than a million NPC all the time. I am quite familiar as well as fond of text-based roleplay as my old group used to RP in text form between actual sessions. Here's my pitch for a character:
Amos Ash Human Ranger (hunter)
Short RP: Hardly breathing, Amos slowly stands up. Slowly reaching for an arrow from his quiver, he keeps his gaze locked into the stag. With careful, calculated motion he nocs the arrow and raises his bow, aiming it towards the creature. As he pulls the arrow back, his weight shifts, ever so slightly and a twing under his heel snaps with a crack. The animal recoils and the arrow flies wide as the stag gallops into the bush behind it. Cursing under his breath, Amos extends his free hand out and mutters a short incantation. The Hunter's Mark takes just as the last glimbse of the stag disappears into the forest and Amos takes off after it, feeling the pulse on the animal echoing through the woods.
Definitely interested in playing. I've played tabletop/online for the last seven years, but I've never done by post before. This would be an interesting change of pace!
Cioran Mosswind
Wood Elf
Monk
Hiccuping, Cioran sways on his feet and blinks owlishly at the bandit. "Tell you what," he slurs, the wine strong on his breath. "If you can take the coins from me, you can have them! I'm very drunk.... should be easy, right?" He grins foolishly as the bandit slightly lowers the knife. The bandit steps forward, reaching for Cioran's belt pouch. Cioran lurches to the side, hands out as if to steady himself. "Did you feel that? The ground just moved!" He giggles crazily as the bandit reaches for it again, drunkenly but smoothly stepping out of reach. Growling, the bandit whips his knife at Ciroan's chest..****y to find the blade spinning out of his hand! His forearm has gone numb from a blindingly fast chop to his elbow. The bandit looks up in time only to see Cioran's foot coming for his face. The bandit crumples in a heap, unconscious. Sniffing, Cioran wipes his arm across his nose. He reaches into his pouch and drops two sliver in the open hand of the knocked out fellow. "Sorry," he says to the form at his feet. "I wasn't as drunk as I thought I was... but I'm going to change that!" Still swaying slightly, he whistles tunelessly as he heads towards the inn, ready to see if they have the wine he prefers.
Hello, I’d definitely be interested in playing with the group.
Illdan Sheba
Drow
Artificer/Wizard
short rp:
Illdan stepped out of his workshop while he pulled his key ring out of his side pouch, the metal clinked softly as he shifted through them to select the correct one. He knew he shouldn’t have stayed out as late as he did but he was so close to making a break through. As he slid the key into the lock and began twisting, a sharp point pressed into his spine followed by a low voice that growled “Step back inside and let’s have a chat.”
Illdan froze before cursing his luck and swung the door back open, deftly stepping inside.
“Whatever you think you’ll gain here I’m afraid that it will only lead to disappointment.” Illdan spoke letting his distinct elven accent roll in the darken space.
Luckily for Illdan the dark room was clear as day as the torch light from the street shone through the portal. He strode forward as an increased pressure from the blade prompted as the room was plunged into total darkness with the aggressor closing the door. Clearly this individual had some level of dark vision as well for the blade was once again pressed into his back.
“Now I want ya to turn out your pockets and hand it all over before we move onto the che- WHAT THE YOU LITTLE SHIT!” The voice still low almost purred before shouting once they were caught off guard as Illdan dropped a globe of darkness that all drow possessed.
As the darkness fell Illdan dropped and rolled forward slipping his dagger out in the process. The would be thief stumbled into a table giving Illdan their location. He leapt, tackling into the person earning a cut to the cheek as their blade lashed out. Illdan and the thief skirmished on for another thirty seconds before Illdan managed to land the pommel of his dagger into the thief’s temple, disorientating them enough for their blade to clatter against the rough stone floor. He dropped the darkness to better see his foe. A tall human woman with blonde hair lay looking confused before Illdan slammed the pommel into the side of her head yet again knocking her unconscious. He stood and caught his breath before stooping down and heaved the woman over his shoulder as he carried her outside and set her in a place that other thieves or worse would find her. He dusted himself off before he turned to walk away. Illdan paused before he sighed and pulled 5 silver out of his coin pouch and slipped them in the girl’s hand. With that Illdan set off towards his current lodgings in the city.
As the Warforged walks along the streets, a young man appears to rob Silverhand. The cold metal face gazes at the bandit, a grimacing expression that can hardly be changed due to how he was built. Silverhand sees him for what he is - a desperate man in need, down the wrong path. He knew the knife would not be able to pierce his steel flesh, this was hardly a threat.. But yet, empathy washes over Silverhand. He isn't quite sure why but he can see himself within the bandit, a desperate fool waving around a weapon as he once did. He reaches into his coin purse and offers the man a couple of the coins inside of it. He confiscates the knife while the bandit is counting the coins, Silverhand has trouble speaking coherently as his thoughts about how he used to be - He tries to tell the man that the knife could be used for something productive, such as carving a statue to be sold - as opposed to a destructive force.
Short RP - As the streets came alive with the flickering glow of torchlight, Elysia, the charming yet not-so-bright bard, found herself in a tight spot. A lone bandit, his knife gleaming ominously in the dim light, stepped forward, demanding her coin. Elysia, her heart racing, grinned with that disarming charm of hers and began to sway to an imaginary tune. "Ah, my good sir," she purred, her fingers deftly twirling a lock of her golden hair "you've caught me in the middle of my finest performance yet!" She gestured grandly to the empty street, as though it were her stage. "But alas, I've not a single coin to spare." Her voice was like honey, smooth and inviting. The bandit, momentarily captivated by her theatrics, lowered his knife. With a flourish, Elysia twirled away, leaving him bewildered and utterly charmed, slipping through the shadows to safety.
Short backstory: Thora was a person of importance, a favoured addition to her household, being employed as an interrogator before hand. Her patron was not a benevolent man, far from it. Ever paranoid of plots and schemes, thus Thora found her hands full. The lordling, fed by his paranoia, saw enemies and schemers everywhere, afterall it was her task to make them confess regardless if they were innocent or not.
As days, weeks and months we're spent in the torture chamber and the paranoia of the lordling having deepened. Thora grew more curious of the tolerance of the body, it's inner workings, thus her research led her down to the path to learn of Loviatar. Her work grew more spiritual, after all, pain was sacred, the most powerful of sensations. In time her methods changed to make the sensation as powerful as possible while maintaining one's physical form.
Word of the lordling and his dreadful prodigy of pain spread. Hushed words travelled from ear to ear. Hidden, shrouded by secrecy, an actual plot was enacted. A mob of peasants gathered, pitchforks gleaming under the moon, torches crackling with flame. The Manor was stormed, the lord's body hanged from the great oak, bruised, bloodied. As the vengeful folk scoured the house, the artisan of pain was nowhere to be found, her Chambers empty, the tools still crimson.
As the Manor burned, far from the building along a cobbled path, unknown to the hateful mob, a cloaked figure was departing, seeking future elsewhere.
While on her journey, she was forced to stop in an inn to rest her weary head. Having enjoyed a drink and a meal, the traveler retired to her room. Her rest was long overdue, but even now, she couldn't rest easy as scratching noises pierced her ears. She'd sit up, her hand going for the candle to investigate, but to her surprise, the light is snuffed out, her eyes glance over to the room, hand gripping a dagger she had kept under her pillow, ready for a fight. "Come out! I know you are out there!" She'd speak as she stands ready to defend herself whatever might it be.
So hello, I notice you have a cleric already, I hope you have room for two :p
Reaching a mineshaft deep underground, there is a loud crack above, dust and debris begin falling. Looking up Ronalh sees a large piece of the ceiling falling and underneath it is a member of his party, Ronalh snaps into action! In one deft motion he grabs the small burglar and brings him to safety from under the deadly debris. “We need to move now!” He yells in a commanding voice, worried about the inevitability of a cave in. The way back was already filling up with large stones the only way was forward… gripping his shield in one hand he raises it above his head and beckons for the other members to follow closely as they set of down the shaft in a race against death. The rumbling grew stronger and the passageway began to collapse in on itself, there was light at the end of the passage and Ronalh knew the uncertainty ahead was better than the certainty of his entire party being buried alive in a lonely mineshaft. As they neared the light Ronalh noticed the opening was not big enough for his entire party but there was no time for anything, “push through!” Ronalh dropped his shoulder and with a roar he smashed through the rock wall and into a vertical shaft which he and his party fell into…

I like to play a Fighter, Sorcerer and Barbarian but can adapt to whatever campaign I’m a part of!
Your game is such an interesting concept. You mentioned that the departure of the gods was the birth of Clerics and Paladins. Could you elaborate on that a bit more? What grants them their power and purpose? Do people still worship the gods, even though they're gone and no longer grant abilities/powers/etc.?
Character Name: Brigida Freeborn
Race: Half-orc
Class: Sorcadin (Beginning with 2 levels in Paladin, multiclassing Sorcerer thereafter)
Short RP prompt: <You awake to a scratching sound within your room. Attempts to light a candle fail as the flame will not catch.>
The intermittent scratching works its way into her dream, a sourceless anomaly completely out-of-place in the meadow where she stands with her father. He is as she remembers him: strong, silent, a deep and jagged scar trailing down the right side of his mouth beneath a cracked tusk. Giving her nothing - just there.
'This is a dream,' she thinks, consciousness gradually overtaking her dream state. 'Father's been dead for many years. But that scratching...'
Brigida's eyes fly open; she remains perfectly still in bed. The dream still clings to her, blurring the edges of her awareness. She waits. There it is again: that scratching. Soft, but recurring at odd intervals. She turns her head subtly and scans the room, listening. Even with her darkvision, she sees nothing.
'Is it behind the walls or under the floor? Maybe a mouse?" she wonders.
The scratching suddenly becomes a steady but soft rhythm from the opposite corner of the room. It starts moving towards her. Yes, it is definitely under the floorboards. No, it's definitely not a mouse. Turning on her side, she reaches for the candle beside her bed and attempts to light it. She strikes the first match - it won't ignite. She strikes the second match - it lights, but the sulfurous head snaps off and falls somewhere to the floor below, snuffed out. The scratching stops for a moment, then intensifies, hurrying towards her. She tries to strike a third match, but her trembling hands drop the box and send the matches scattering across the floor.
"Come on," she whispers to herself.
Suddenly, the scratching becomes frenzied, erratically but surely approaching her. Brigida's eyes dart around the room. Her battleaxe is near the door, too far to fetch right now. All she has are her fists. She kneels on the bed and raises her fists. The scrambling scratching swings to the foot of her bed, then erupts into a cacaphony of bangs, squeaks, and yowls. A board clatters across the floor. Two small figures emerge from the foot of her bed, locked in a vicious battle: an enormous rat and the innkeeper's scarred tomcat, Blinky - so named for his one working eye.
The rat leaves a dark trail of blood behind it. Blinky, smudged with its blood, sees an opening and lunges for the rat's throat. There is a muffled crunch, then silence. Brigida releases a breath she didn't know she was holding. She rolls her eyes and falls back on her bed. The soft sounds of crunching and tearing drift over from where Blinky enjoys his midnight snack.
Yes, it was the birth or should I say the start of the clerics and paladins. I will PM with a bit more detail. I can't be giving too many hints about my world. Since it has never been published, WOTC might try and take it. ;) or someone else.

I want to thank everyone for their posts and amazing character concepts. A lot of great characters have shown up and impressed our current dnd group. I am going through interviews with many of the applicants here. If you have not received a pm, I just haven't got there yet. In order to avoid being overloaded am only doing a few at a time.
Over the next few days I will give the final decisions via PM.
Thanks again everyone.

Some very interesting character choices have come up. Let's keep them coming. There are a few more days before this thread will be closed.
You can lead a dwarf to water, but you can't make him get in the boat.
Character name: Thora Dreadmoore
Race: Shadar-kai (Dhampir if allowed)
Class: Cleric of Loviatar (Life domain)
Short backstory: Thora was a person of importance, a favoured addition to her household, being employed as an interrogator before hand. Her patron was not a benevolent man, far from it. Ever paranoid of plots and schemes, thus Thora found her hands full.
'I gotta get out of this podunk town.'
Yes, it was the birth or should I say the start of the clerics and paladins. I will PM with a bit more detail. I can't be giving too many hints about my world. Since it has never been published, WOTC might try and take it. ;) or someone else.
You can lead a dwarf to water, but you can't make him get in the boat.
Understood! You have to protect that intellectual property ;) Thank you!
