(First off, if this question has been answered elsewhere, please direct me to that and delete this. I'm not trying to be "that guy" or anything.)
But, the question I'm asking is, "How does all of this work?" I understand that if you meet people who happen to be in/near your area, then getting together to game in real-time, face-to-face probably isn't that difficult. But, when you're playing with a group online, how does it work? Skype? Instant Messaging?
I promise I'm being sincere with this question, so please don't berate me too awfully badly. I'm not trolling, just old and (somewhat) ignorant as to how all the cool kids are playing nowadays...
There are various ways to play online. The most popular are Discord, Roll20, and Fantasy Grounds. These platforms offer dice rollers, battle mats, voice chat, video chat--all that jazz. Sure, you could play via Skype or Google Hangouts, but they don't create much of a TTRPG space. If you're into writing, there are play-by-post forums you can join (including here on D&D Beyond).
So if you find a group here in this thread, then odds are you're going to migrate over to one of the places I mentioned earlier to start playing. Consider this a meeting stone--the game is entered elsewhere.
Post by post is in the series of threads below this group on the general topics page. If you're someone like me, who can't use their mic, it's a great text-based way to play. Basically, everyone in the campaign writes out their actions, dialogue, etc. and posts it as a forum post for your campaign's thread. The trick is just finding campaigns that are recruiting.

Also PBP (Play By Posts) are great for those that cannot commit to a time schedule. Otherwise, our group uses Facebook messaging to do the trick. Plus we all hang and chit chat during the rest of the week (we have 2 groups, a campaign one and a chat one).

I just want to tell everyone "happy gaming" and actually mean it. Whatever your game is, just have fun with it, it is after all, just a game.
I actually run a play by post game over on naerakingdom.freeforums.net. it is a very effective way to to play online. I have been doing it for years and it works great. Plus I also run a live game that runs for about 3 hours each game twice a week, by this I mean you log on at the game time and post on the fly during the game. It has worked out great so far.

Thank you.
Play-by-post? (Or should I just be Googling at this point? I'm going to Google at this point. Thank you again.)
