Hello! I've been wanting to get into dnd for a longgg time but never got around to it. I finally made an account here and wanted to give this a shot. I'm looking for a group that can put up with my questions since I've never played before. I do not have, or plan on getting, discord. I dunno how this site works but it seemed like a lot of people used discord.
Hopefully I'm going to be more of a help than an annoyance.
You aren't the only person I've seen recently who doesn't have and doesn't want Discord. Honestly, I get it; I didn't want to at first, either. However, while it isn't necessarily impossible you won't find a game, you will find it a lot -- and I mean a lot -- harder if you're not willing to get Discord. Discord is how a great majority of online games are held. It not only is where the voice chat is often held for online games, but where many DMs will drop lore, maps, and other information (what might have been paper handouts in old school in-person games), how DMs communicate when a game is delayed or cancelled, where a lot of player and even some player character interaction is held, and so on. Even DMs of in-person games who won't need the voice channels may use Discord for everything else.
Besides, if you don't want to get Discord, you're almost certainly going to have to sign up for something else anyhow -- there is no voice function on D&D Beyond. Therefore, unless you're willing to wait for an online game that uses an app you already have or something else you are willing to sign up for, you will be better off making a post for organizing or joining an in-person game where you live. (You may have heard of the virtual tabletop [VTT] site Roll20, for example; you can sign up for games played through there, the site does have audio and video capabilities, and DMs can send their players campaign information, schedule and cancel sessions, etc. through Roll20, but you're still likely going to find many games/DMs use Discord for other functions, or just because what they want to do is easier through Discord.)
TL;DR: You are making it a lot harder on yourself finding a game, especially online, without Discord. It sucks, but just download it.
Okay, so I don't have discord either. But I have Roll20, and am available most Thursdays from around 7-9pm (GMT+1). I'm new to the game too and am looking for a DM, so if you wanna join me as a player feel free.
unfortunately I can't join you due to time zone differences. When you'll be playing it'll be 3 am for me lol Thanks for the response though! Now I know a site I can use
