Hey dear future Dungeon Mistress/Master, this might sound like a little selfish request, for it would be a campaign I’d just love to take part in, but maybe you, dear reader, have already a somewhat similar campaign in mind or could simply be excited by the idea of creating such a campaign yourself. And hopefully you are also looking for a new player or even a whole new group to try it out with.
This request is focusing on a Dungeon Mistress/Master only, for now. I do not have a group of players to play with yet, but since finding good or decent players is easier than finding a good DM in my experience, I wanted to focus on the latter first. In addition I would prefer to have the DM around for selecting possible future players, since you as the DM will most likely interact a bit more with each player, regarding their backstories, wishes and ideas, than each player might do with one another.
Looking for:
Game: [preferably] D&D 5e, D&D 3.5, Pathfinder
Group preferred: Online via Discord ([preferably] Voice and Video/Voice only) / Face-to-face (if everyone comes from the same area, which is unlikely)
Experience: New / a few years / veteran (all are welcome)
Location/Timezone: ? (my timezone is UTC+1/GMT+1, we will have to find a time we can all agree on)
Availability: Saturdays and Sundays all day long or during the week between 6 PM and 12 AM
Preferred role: GM
Game style: Mostly focusing on roleplay while using a casual to slightly hardcore set of rules.
1. General information:
Possible Risks to consider before applying as a DM or Player:
I would like for all of us, who are considering joining this adventure, to be 100% sure of what I am asking here and the toll that this request might hold. I absolutely do not wish for anyone to burn out because of it, so please be aware of this colossus of a task. This shall neither become a burden nor be put on the shoulders of one person only. If it might seem so, I want to let you know: that is not what I intend.
We are all in this together:
I think we can all agree that the DM has the most important role to play at the table and the most responsibility to shoulder. One could view them as the CEO of the group to place things into the terminology of work. ^^ And every good leader needs a good team to support them with the best of their qualities.
Thus as much as we players can help to lower their possible workload, shall be a goal to strive for. For example:
Taking notes
Creating and updating our backstories in collaboration with the DM
Sharing possible ideas, maybe even having players creating parts of the multi-cosmos themselves of course still with the DMs final decision
Creating and updating a small wiki for creatures, NPCs, locations, etc.
Writing tools/scripts/macros for platforms like Roll20
Creating or searching for artworks
Sharing their TTRPG-Resources
…
That goes for all of us involved. I want everyone at the table to always feel welcome, comfortable and appreciated for what they do. That goes especially for the DM.
I am still learning about most of this myself and thus probably ask for an utopia here but nonetheless I would wish for all who feel ready for this quest to go on that adventure together with me and figure it out along the way. And should we fall we'll get back up together as a team. No one is left behind.
For this I would wish for everyone to always be honest and open with one another about how they feel and their ideas for possible ways of what to improve and how to help optimise our approach on this. D&D is a collaborative storytelling experience and I want us all not as a party of strangers, not even as a party of players but really as a party of friends to create and enjoy this together. All of us.
So we all need to be watching out for the wellbeing of one another, especially the DM.
As I've mentioned I want everyone involved to take this seriously but of course not to the extent of losing the fun in it and overworking.
Compensation:
That this task can and probably will turn into work later on, especially once we hit higher levels, is sadly a given, I suppose. Thus there might be possibilities of compensation for the work that will be put into this. What that might entail I do not know yet, but I am certain that we can find a way to properly appreciate the work that has been put in and find a reasonable way to compensate for that which can and will be decided by everyone involved.
2. What I am looking for regarding the campaign:
In General:
I am looking for a D&D campaign that is aiming to go beyond level 20(Epic Levels) and uses a Gestalt/Gestalt-like set of rules. It should however start in the realms of lower levels like 1 to 5 for example and be focussed on running long-term, maybe even with a slower growth/leveling rate in general.
Concerning the focus I’d personally prefer a roundabout split of RPing 45%, combat 30%, exploration 20% and puzzles/mysteries 5%.
But of course each and every single one of the preferences I have and will mention can and probably will be discussed with you and also will only really depend on your (the DMs) final choice.
Schedule:
Concerning the time to run sessions each week, I would prefer the weekends so either Saturday or Sunday for I will be working the rest of the week and will thus only be able to make time in the evenings (6 PM to 12 AM UTC+1/GMT+1), which might collide with the time zones of you or future players.
Set of Rules: It can be a D&D 5e, D&D 3.5, Pathfinder or a complete homebrewed set of rules, but I myself have only ever partaken in 5e campaigns and thus would prefer something in the lines of that. However I am always open to try other versions as well but please consider that I will start as a freshling into these. ^^
Setting: Personally I would prefer a homebrew campaign created by you in a High Fantasy setting, maybe even going to other planes, the stars or the Astral Sea at a higher level. This means that it preferably will be a world or multiverse created by you, or for it to take place in an existing one, flavored by your ideas. Of course this is a big request and thus not always in the realms of what is possible, so if you have a unique and interesting approach on one of the existing D&D settings, I would also be down for that.
Why I’m preferring a homebrew campaign is because so far I have experienced that for a DM to have created and filled the world with mostly their own ideas and visions, made them more motivated for running the campaign long-term, which I would want this campaign to be and for the whole created world to feel more alive and believable.
If you want to, you can have the characters, story and overall world use an Anime like approach, make it highly realistic or mix it up. I myself am always down for an epic adventure that feels like being straight from an Anime or the heroic tale of an ancient legend. But I can also find lots of fun in fighting the odds of surviving in a harsh and maybe even foreign land.
Role Playing:
If you are interested in or simply enjoy decision making in your game world, feel free to give consequences to a player’s actions (choices matter or the likes) for it creates exciting tensions and with that lots of fun. Character relationships or even romance between players, NPCs or a player and an NPC can also be fun and exciting, especially if they lead to interesting effects or challenges in the game world. All of this is completely up to your own creation as it should be.
Resources:
Considering possible books and resources for this campaign, I am always willing to share what I have gathered or purchase something new in these regards if need be. I think, since we all want to have fun in this campaign together and are hopefully even becoming good friends along the way, sharing our ideas and resources should be the least we can do.
3. What I am looking for in you as a person:
Personality:
I am looking for an open, respectful and kind person. Since I myself, however, am an honest person who values respect for each other, I would like to address the following matter:
No matter your cultural-background, gender, faith or interest (sexual or otherwise), I won’t be treating you differently than any other human being. Neither because of the points I just mentioned nor because you simply want me to do so. I hope that you are not expecting me or the other future players to treat you differently. I do respect your personal view of the world, your opinion and how you feel thus I would also like for you to accept my personal view, opinion and feelings. We are all human beings and thus should be treated with the same respect and dignity. Should any of that offend you or may be considered a deal-breaker for this application, I hereby apologies for that and hope that you will be able to find a lovely group that suits your needs elsewhere. Thank you.
Passion and Fun not just Work:
I hope you won’t be viewing this campaign as only work. We are all humans and sometimes sadly life gets the better of us and comes in the way of things. Of course I would absolutely appreciate it if we take this seriously, meet as a group on a regular basis and are fully committed to make the best out of our get-togethers while enjoying it as much as possible. However I won’t be expecting any of us to spend every second of their precious time entirely on this. Nonetheless, since DMing can turn into work over time, there will also always be the possibility of considering a compensation for the efforts you probably will be putting into this. I want all of us to feel happy and apreciated after all.
In other words I am looking for someone who wants to do this because of fun and passion and who might also be interested in making new connections and friendships along the way.
No Experience needed:
All of this also implies that it doesn't matter if you have years of experience as a DM or are just starting and this might be your first time. If you have passion, feel drawn to an idea of your own creation that you want to bring to life as a DM and are eager to learn and enjoy this journey with a group of hopefully soon to be friends, you are more than welcome to apply here. I want to welcome everyone, create a comfortable environment for us to play, learn, grow and enjoy this together.
A General interest in RPing yourself:
Personally I would love it, if you yourself have an interest and also feel comfortable in RPing, as well as trying to use different or even fully unique voices and personalities for your NPCs. Of course this is something not everyone is comfortable with, especially in a group of strangers, but even if it is just something you could consider or could find interest in that would already suffice. In the end, I want us all to become comfortable with one another. Something like acting out our character and their "roles" can then become something we all will find joy and excitement in.
Applying the game rules in consideration of having fun at the table:
While I love to have a good set of rules to guide our player experience, I am always happy when a DM uses the Rule of Cool to allow players to shine in their special moments, when they have a great or just stupidly fun idea of how to approach a specific situation. After all, I would want fun to always be priority number 1 as long as it suits our narrative and doesn't ruin the fun for others.
Sensible topics at the table:
In regards to possible sensible topics that could be displayed during our campaign, I myself am okay with the display of almost all kinds of violence and horrors, even if my player character is directly affected by it, however I would want to draw the line when describing sexual interactions in detail. Let's leave that in our private bedrooms, wet dreams or mind-palasts, please. ^^ But of course this is only my personal preference. I would appreciate it if you would be considerate of all the players' preferences in these regards to ensure a safe and comfortable environment at the table.
4. A bit about myself:
Name (pronounce): Dom (he/him) Age/year of birth: 1995 Time Zone (country/state optional): UTC+1/GMT+1 (Germany)
What is your experience with D&D/TTRPGs? : I seriously started adventuring in 2018 but I did some quest hunts before that. I'm proficient with pen and paper, D&D Beyond, Roll20, as well as The Forge and of course RPing in general. However, I think gaining expertise in any of them might still be a long and rough road, for I only have a mortal mind and the multi-cosmos of TTPRPGs is just too vast for one to travel.
How would you describe yourself as a player/DM?: I am an open and respectful person that knows when to be silent and let other players enjoy their spotlight-moment. In my eyes D&D is a collaborative storytelling experience, guided by the DM. Thus it is important for all of us to work and hopefully create many memorable moments together.
What do you enjoy when it comes to TTRPGs and what do you despise?: Being immersed into my character and the world is important to me, but not to the extent that it will ruin the fun for another player. So no “But that is what my character would do!”, while you destroy something dear to another player. I love a good mixture of seriousness and jokes on the table, as long as everyone is having a good time. And personally I find fun in all aspects a D&D-campaign has to offer: I enjoy to get lost in the story forged by the DM and players, feel a spark of wonder, when there is an unexpected reveal of a character's backstory or the discovering of some hidden secrets within the world, I get excited, when I am forced into an aggravating fight against an obnoxious foe, as well as, when the group is caught up in a thrilling chase/heist that needs each player to shine, and I feel a sweet relieve, when solving a tricky puzzle or uncovering an unsolved mystery. But the things I absolutely love are the sometimes simple roleplaying moments that truly bring the world to life. So yeah, roleplaying is what I enjoy the most. Combat can be a lot of fun, too, but sometimes it can feel tiring, if it becomes too much/long. In addition meeting new people and watching their characters grow, fills me with excitement, as watching your favorite movie. But now you are also a part of it.
Do you already have a campaign idea? What would be a short description of your idea (without spoilers)?: No, I don't have an idea.
How would you describe and introduce your players into the campaign?:
5. How to apply:
Well, enough about me and all this, if you want to leave an application, and say "Hi", feel free to do so. Here is how you can do this. Since I am looking for people who want to take this seriously and are fully aware of the journey they may start here, I probably won't be responding or looking too deep into applications that seem to be written “half-heartedly”. I am sorry for that, but I would really appreciate it if you could take the time and fill in this form for your applications:
Name (pronounce):
Age/year of birth:
Time Zone (country/state optional):
What is your experience with D&D/TTRPGs? :
How would you describe yourself as a player/DM?:
What do you enjoy when it comes to TTRPGs and what do you despise?:
Do you already have a campaign idea? What would be a short description of your idea (without spoilers)?:
How would you introduce your players into the campaign?:
This way I can get a better picture of you as a person and get to know a bit more of the possible ideas that you have and the story you might wanna tell.
You can apply by using the same form that I used to introduce myself above and sending me a private message to my D&D Beyond User Profile PRO_Phet (Dungeon Mistress/Master only for now).
Please only share information that you feel comfortable sharing. If you have any questions, remarks or suggestions concerning my post, feel free to let me know down below.
For all Players I'll probably keep this post updated and either post a link to the player application down below, or alter this very post in general. So stay tuned if you are interested in how this develops, for I certainly am. ^^
Thanks for stopping by, and hope to see you soon.
May the divine dice bless your rolls and don't forget to love each other.
