Hello! My name is Hayden Kammer, and I am a senior Psychology major at Wabash College. I am conducting an experiment that involves playing Dungeons & Dragons, and I am recruiting participants. Below you will find information about the study, including compensation, and my contact information if you are interested in participating.
Study purpose: The goal of the study is to measure the effects of role playing on social attitudes. At the end of the study, participants will receive more detailed information about the goals of the study, as well as information on how to receive the report on the results.
Procedure: Participants will devote approximately three hours to playing a Dungeons & Dragons one-shot and completing a short survey afterward. Participants will be assigned a character and will receive character information in advance of the campaign.
Who may participate? Participants must be United States residents at least 18 years old, and must have some experience playing Dungeons & Dragons. Because the experiment will be conducted virtually, participants must have access to a computer with an internet connection, as well as a working microphone and camera. Participants must also have a Zoom account.
Compensation: Participants will be entered into a drawing for one $50 Amazon gift card. We expect to have approximately 45 participants in this study.
Confidentiality: We will not collect identifying information about participants other than a valid email address by which the Amazon gift card may be delivered electronically to the winner of the drawing.
This study has been approved by the Wabash College Institutional Review Board (https://www.wabash.edu/irb/).
If you are interested in participating, please email me at HJKammer24@wabash.edu with the subject, “Dungeons and Dragons Roleplaying Research Interest.”
Game: D&D 5e
Group type: Online over Zoom
Experience: Experience with playing the game
Location/Timezone: Eastern Time Zone
Schedule: Any day Monday-Thursday from 7pm EST to 10pm EST
Roles sought: Looking for as many players as possible, with 6 players per group.
Game style: Games will be roleplay heavy with some combat. We’ll primarily use theater of the mind for combat, but some maps will be provided.
