I am looking at taking on the DM role and setting up a Discord based weekly session of British/UK based players - Mainly for ease of Timezone and Scheduling.
I have been actively playing D&D now for a year mostly as a PC; but have also DMd a few impromptu One-Shots and One-Offs for friends to show them what the game is all about, having a developed understanding of the rules/game. While I will still be continuing as a PC in my current group/campaign, I am ready to step into the DM role as I want more D&D in my life! Plus the challenge of putting together a fully-prepped session and story to bring new players into D&D is super exciting!
Here is a summary of a few things to know if this group will be right for you:
We will have a Session 0 before we start the campaign to make sure we are all on the same page, have a balanced and diverse party, and agree on when to play our first full session.
After we have an idea from Session 0 of Class/Race of all the characters, then I will ask you to provide me directly with character backstories. I am really keen to ensure that we develop individual character backstories throughout the campaign. For me, best D&D is when each character has their own personal motivations as well as the ones thrown at them by the story. That means coming to the table with a character that has flawsas well as strengthsso that they can truly grow throughout the story. It's also important that we keep as many of the details of your backstories so they come out in-character within the sessions, so I'll be looking to develop these collaboratively with you 1:1.
We can agree on what rules we want to use on encumbrance, living expenses and initial character stats in Session 0. I want to pick rules on this that players collectively feel most comfortable with.
We will use the 5e ruleset but there are a few homebrew rules we will blend in to make the game flow better and extract the most fun - all of which we will explain and agree during Session 0. On rules in general, I will mostly go 'Rules and Written' but the 'Rule of Cool' most definitely applies if it can be justified on a Case-by-Case basis.
I don't want to speak too much about the module I'll be running until Session 0. However, I can say that the campaign will be set in Faerun so that you are able to draw on the wealth of D&D lore already out there and we will be starting at LVL1 and going from there.
I want to get a good balance of 'Roleplay' and 'Combat' in the game. The kind of D&D I like to play is a 'collaborative storytelling' experience, so while you don't need to be anything close to professional actor to get the most out of it, you have to be willing to let loose and get into character.
Levelling will be Milestone Based rather than XP based. This just allows everyone to focus on the story and making cool narrative decisions rather than being driven by what might extract the most experience from any given situation. It also means we keep the party balanced throughout and maintain the right level of challenge/reward to encounters. By the end of the campaign, your character would be expected to be LVL5.
We will use Discord to play and D&D Beyond for Character Sheets. Content sharing of my resources will be made available to players in the campaign except for the module we will be running.
We will use D&D Beyond Maps, and I'll be looking to incorporate ambient sounds, music etc to the play to get the most immersive experience.
You can roll physical dice (as that's such a satisfying part of D&D) where you have them, or can use the digital dice on there instead if you prefer.
Discord will be a strictly camera-on experience when we are playing as anything else is really unsociable (Even for me)!
I want to allow for a game that brings in a broad spectrum of themes from light-hearted or slapstick comedy and adult humour all the way to tragedy, loss, betrayal and grief. During our 1:1 sessions I will of course ask if there any sensitive topics you would want me to avoid, but as default I feel a broadly open and free-form story that brings in all the whole range of the human experience leaves the greatest possibility to create amazing narrative moments.
There will be real stakes and consequences to your actions in the game. Characters and any beloved NPCs will be able to die if things go badly enough. This gives the game a real sense of jeopardy and helps with engagement and ultimately, fun.
Hopefully that sounds interesting to you! Just please consider the following:
I am 32, Male and I have a Mon-Fri job; this means games will be played either Weekday evenings or Weekends.
There is no set age requirement, however please consider that it would be weird if I hung out with a group of people significantly younger than me on a weekly basis!! By all means don't let that put you off reaching out, but just don't be offended if I have to consider that when thinking about the 'vibe-check' of the group.
The kind of D&D I want to play isn't about 'winning' or 'beating' the game; its about having fun, making friends and telling a story. As a player, please consider that everyone needs their moment to shine and that failing rolls is all part of the fun in the story-telling experience. Be collaborative and considerate to the other players, and don't fudge rolls to try and 'win'. Its not fun!
This will be YOUR story that I am helping to tell. However, as the DM I am the 'referee' to make sure that story is fun for everyone. I encourage players to try things out, see if they can bend the rules here-or-there in the name of fun. However, when in-game any ruling is final so we can keep the game moving. If there are any questions, queries or issues, I will have an open door before or after sessions for us work together to iron anything out.
If you are interested, DM me on here and we'll look to get adventuring!
Happy to work on something using Aarakocra racial traits and work it into an Owl-type, or homebrew something custom as long as we can keep it balanced.
Camera on for me is definitely the way to go to get the best experience! My game as a PC is camera-on and we’ve also since met up in person to play over a weekend and finish the last campaign. Can’t imagine playing without seeing people’s reactions!
Hello! I've just started looking for an online group to play D&D with, not only to experience more of the game and its role play, since I'm quite experienced with the game but haven't had many chances to play, but also to boost my confidence with interacting with other people (so you may have to excuse me if I'm a tad awkward). I would love to have the opportunity to join your campaign, if you have a spot open of course!
Extremely interested in joining. I have had previous camera experience during D&D sessions. Been playing since 2016 and I'm a massive lore freak so seeing that you're doing Faerun would be really fun to play with. Would love to join you at the table seeing that the availability looks like weekend afternoons/evenings (It works for me since I work mornings).
I'm guessing you might be full by now but if not this sounds really interesting! I'm not terribly experienced as a player but I have a decent grasp of the basics rules, I really like the RP aspect and I'm looking for another campaign to join, if you've still any spots please lmk!
I'd be interested in joining. I am Europe based and have a job. So i'd prefer to play during the weekend or in the evenings. I am 36, living in Germany. I started playing AD&D as a teen and after a very long hiatus from the game started to play again in 2022. I mostly DM'ed so far and I really enjoy the roleplay aspect of the game.
Hi! I'm VERY interested. I am relatively new to actually playing D&D but I'm familiar with the rules and the experience in general. I am, however, in Central European time zone, but unless the game is later in the evening, it might work with my schedule.
I have what I think is a pretty interesting and well thought out player background and the style of play you described sounds like what I'm looking for.
Is there still room for one more player?

Is this still open?
Okay interesting, I've never done a camera on session before XD. Also can we play inhuman characters as I've always wanted to play a owl scholar.

If you don't want me that's fine just want to make sure you didn't click the button on accident or something because it seems very strange
