Sovereign Hall of Justice, 62nd of Budding, Early Afternoon ---
"Two murders yesterday. Two nobles. Yet no connections between them I can see. Tell me you were able to get something from that thug those 'mushroom hunters' apprehended."
"Respectfully High General, I borrowed the best Lieutenant-Caster you have on staff and even with the threat of dipping his face in raw eyther he did not crack. That does tell us something though."
"You know I dislike when you manipulate the suspects Vergol."
"Believe me I tried every other honest method I could. The man seemed more afraid of giving over anything than he did for his own life, even freely claimed to have murdered Lady Folarre for snits. He seemed quite intent on sending himself to the gallows. He's protecting someone. Someone powerful and more frightening than a noose."
"That is more than we had to go on yesterday for all these disappearances. Still we..."
A firm knock on the door.
"Come."
The door opens. Two sets of footsteps shuffle.
"High General. Constable. Please forgive the interruption. Our Guard-Captain bade us report this directly to um. Well to you, Constable, but tis likely the General will want to hear it too."
"Then by all means, speak, Guards-Person Goreli- isn't it?"
"Yess'im. My partner an I received a report this morning from a friend, a source I trust near as to my partner, regarding a mass grave and large group of active brigands up north side of the city into the boons. By his count he barely escaped alive with his company, only by the grace of fallin' through to the under-city."
"Get to the worst part Teja"
"I was gettin there, Marco, shush." Clears her throat. "Apologies sir, ma'am. But yea, the worst part is the reported state of the bodies. Burnt to the bone, signs of torture. Stretchin. Our Guard-Captain already alerted the local Colonel, I believe a small company has already been dispatched, but they bade us come report to you directly as they thought you'd want it direct from us. Ma'am. An' our recruit weren't able to find you in your office."
Another gentle knock at the open door.
"Is this a bad time?"
"Lady Kreel... how unusual to see you here."
"My Lady, please, if you are here then it must be of import. Sovereign Guards you are dismissed, thank you for your report."
"Aye sir." "Aye sir!"
More footsteps. A door shuts.
"I overheard them. Odly enough I come to report the same incident, reported to me by a faithful potential squire for the Golden Guard. I hope I did not overstep- I bade them investigate the whereabouts of this brigand troupe's hideout.... with instructions to not engage of course."
Two matching slow exhales.
"My Lady, I would just that they not muck up any investigation we send. I trust your ladyship's judge of character, though."
One subdued sharp nasal exhale covered by a cough.
"Of course, General. With the rash of disappearances of late this seems a likely major lead though. The Golden Guard is as ever at your disposal should you need more divine arms at your back."
"Your generous offer is most gracious, Lady Martine, but for now we will suffice. Until our next luncheon?"
A door opens.
"I look forward to it, General Grey."
Footsteps. A door shuts. A long annoyed exhale.
"They get bolder every day I swear. You'd think THEY were the Sovereign Guard the way they push into matters. You know my men had to shoo two such paladin from the banks yesterday morn to conceal who died?"
"A matter to impress upon the Bishop, not Lady Kreel. Her heart is in the right place."
"She's too young for you, High General."
"On the contrary Constable, I am too old for her." A soft chuckle, then exhale. "Her father and I were close, but, you already know that I am sure. You hold your post for good reason. Back to matters."
"Yes indeed. Back to matters."
"Did the Conscripted get anything from the bodies?"
Hey all, player for this table just chiming in, if you were wondering about the table.
If you are a new or veteran player I welcome anyone who is down to explore, roleplay, do shenanigans, get into trouble, scheme or just roll heads. TBH the rp is higher than combat, but we do both. And the DM is flexible. Ive been playing in a couple campaigns with the Dm and the backstory, and actions matter as well. Its great that the Dm is accommodating, has nice maps and world building is amazing. Feel free to check in with the DM and see if you are a good fit.
FYI our current party has spaces open due to scheduling and irl related stuff. My PC is kind of a quiet character so if you like RP and being the Face that is something that would be nice at our table. But even if you dont like being the face all player types and skill levels are welcome. We just started the campaign too so there is lot of room to weave in your story as well.
The first thing you notice is that your hands are different. They are yours, you know this, but they are not your current hands- a glance in a nearby puddle reveals a different face as well. You, but not you... a memory. Another life.
You have precious little time to reflect on this however as the searing cold of a thick rain begins biting through your skin. It is pouring, and around you stand a handful of soldiers like yourself- a motley band of armed and armored adventurers.
A massive shadow roars overhead as ancient wings unfurl then press, the glint of silver and scale darting west in a blink towards the nearby mountains.
A soldier calls out- "HOLD THE LINE! Reinforcements must not make it to the pass! Hold the line, & the Cerulean Terror dies TODAY!"
The battle begins. The army of faceless dragonborn outnumber your small band tenfold, but fall fast. You fight with strength and powers far beyond those you have ever experienced in your current life- and as quick as it began the battle is done. The line is held...
But then laughter fills the air.
A devil with blue skin and forked horns emerges from the shadows of this burnt out town.
"Impressive. Just what I need. I hope you understand... this is nothing personal."
A new fight begins, this one dire and hard. You watch as the Devil wields some mysterious crystal.. and nearly pulls the soul from one of your friends to it, only to be stopped by a well timed blow.
With a hiss the devil retreats, "If not today, then another time. I am eternal... you are not." His words echo as shadow envelopes everything.
The scene fades. The world fades, then you open your eyes.
It is the morning of the Day of Dreams. You are yourself again, your life is your own again... but this dream, this memory haunts you.
Somewhere out there are others like you. Others who shared this dream on this prophetic day.
Do you set out to find them? Do you ignore them and the dream, and go about your life? The world has enough problems, people going missing, the King's failing health...
And what of the devil's words... a taunt?... or warning?
Everything looks the same, yet as the dawn rises you cannot help but wonder... will it ever be the same again?
