As dawn broke on the first day of Uktar, a peculiar advertisement was tacked to a signpost just outside the bustling Yawning Portal. The streets of the city were cluttered with all manner of advertisements, peddling wares or offering employment, but this one was different: it beckoned the bold and the brave to join a guided expedition to the legendary Icewind Dale.
These days, few dared to venture north of Waterdeep, with rumors circulating that the sun had forsaken Icewind Dale, refusing to shine its warmth upon the people of Ten-Towns and all who braved the harsh arctic landscape. Indeed, it seemed that more folks were fleeing southward than heading north.
But Thordin Ironbeard, a seasoned dwarf famed for his expert knowledge of the perilous northern trails, saw opportunity where others saw only danger. He announced his plan to assemble a party willing to undertake a bold journey into the icy wilderness. Word of the expedition spread quickly, drawing the attention of those driven by a thirst for adventure, the lure of exploration, and the enigmatic appeal of the frozen frontier.
"Journey to Icewind Dale with Thordin Ironbeard, skilled guide and master of the northern trails! Seeking those with a heart for adventure to join a caravan heading north. A unique opportunity to explore the frozen wilderness, seek treasures, and embark on an unforgettable journey. All backgrounds welcome. Meet at the North Gate, 10th day of Uktar, dawn."
As you arrive at the North Gate, the atmosphere is electric with excitement and anticipation. Thordin Ironbeard's advertisement had promised a journey like no other, and judging by the scene in front of you, he wasn't exaggerating. The entire area is a hive of activity as final preparations are being made for the expedition. Carriages are being loaded with supplies, including large barrels of preserved food and casks of water. Horses are being harnessed to the wagons, their breaths visible in the cool morning air. Some are being fitted with heavy blankets to shield them from the cold winds of the north.
There are a dozen commoners working diligently alongside the caravan, their faces a mix of excitement and trepidation. These brave souls have decided to leave their homes behind to explore the icy lands of Icewind Dale, and they carry the hopes and dreams of their families with them. They look up at the approaching adventurers with wide eyes, noting the determination and confidence in their faces. Conversations buzz around you, as members of the caravan discuss their reasons for joining the expedition, share stories of their past adventures, or simply try to calm their nerves.
The air is filled with the sounds of creaking wagon wheels, neighing horses, and hushed conversations. The cacophony seems to resonate with the collective heartbeat of every individual present, each person driven by their own desires and aspirations, united by the shared adventure ahead.
You exchange glances with your fellow adventurers, feeling the energy in the air. There is a newborn sense of kinship among you all, bound together by your shared willingness to venture into the unknown. Each one of you has your own reasons for undertaking this journey, and you can't help but feel a shared sense of purpose.
