Game: Whatever Group preferred: Online Experience: veteran Location/Timezone: Texas / CST Availability: Sun, Mon, Wed, Thu evenings 7pm CST - whenever Preferred role: Player (DM is not out of the question, see below) Game style: Any (see below)
I have not played 2024 version yet, but I've played and DM'd every version of D&D prior. Also quite a few other systems and genres. But you definitely don't need to worry, I don't live in the past. We're all here to enjoy the new game and that's what I'll do. That said, it's sometimes easy to forget what rule went with what edition, just know it's not on purpose. And it shouldn't need to be said, but I'll say it anyway - DM is the boss. I don't argue.
I can play in just about any style of group, except power gaming. FOTM builds are not for me. My characters are typically single class with deep backstories, of just about any race/class/role. I don't have favorites, so much as a few "least favorites", so I should be able to shoehorn a character into just about any setting. I'll confess that "role-playing" is my weakness and I often play more through actions than words. But I try nonetheless.
I'm looking for weekly online games, mostly played through Discord. I have no issues with Discord and D&D Beyond, but I've had trouble with Roll20 recently. Haven't tried many others. Don't get me wrong, I love a tactical game, but it's been pretty much exclusively theater-of-the-mind for several years now, and I'm okay with that. I'm an experienced DM, but I'd rather play and learn any new rules (and remember forgotten ones) first.
I'm not a great DM, definitely wouldn't make money at it. But my players seem to have fun and we get by. I generally lack the discipline to prepare, doing something like 95% of it in my head then winging it. So I'm not looking for any full time DMing, but I can pinch hit for a burning out DM that just needs a couple weeks rest.
Some personal info that may or may not matter - I'm older, in my 50's, and can still get along with any age adults. I'm educated (PhD), and a former educator, I have a great deal of patience both teaching and learning new concepts. So new players/groups are fine. I keep religion and politics out of games, as player and DM. We live in a boiling over period, but we also all enjoy the same hobby. What I'm saying here is that if other players at the table are constantly going off about current events, I won't fit in.
If it seems like I might be a good fit, let me know!
I may have a server you may like, ages 20-60. Its a homebrew server, but there are a couple games that are standard dnd. message me on here and we can talk.
We have a good group on my server, ages ranging from mid 20s to 50s. All different levels of experience, but all incredible role players who would love to dig into your characters' deep backstories, myself included.
With your wealth of experience and thoughtful approach, The Nexus sounds like a community that would really suit you. We’re an 18+ LGBTQAI+ friendly global group running daily online sessions across multiple time zones, so your availability Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings CST fits well.
We play using the 2014 5e ruleset with all official content released for it, with a Westmarch-style format where each DM runs their own world. Our games focus on collaborative storytelling and tactical play, mostly theater-of-the-mind, or using owlbear for maps, but with room for whatever style fits the table. Power gaming and FOTM builds are not actively encouraged, but i'd lie if i said there aren't players that enjoy that side of thigs too. that said i am sure you'd find a group to fit in with in time.
We offer free games, use Discord and D&D Beyond with full content sharing, and support Play-by-Post for added flexibility. If you want to pinch-hit DM occasionally, the community is welcoming to that as well, as we have an apprenticeship program to help you get comfortable with DMing within our community.

Hey there IAmLegion,
Are you looking for Free or Paid games?
I'm starting up a new Spelljammer mini-campaign on Thursdays next week. It's going to be super silly but should also tug on some heart strings.
Here's a link to my Startplaying Profile. The Spelljammer game is "Escort the Great Hamurabi"!
Escort the Great Hamurabi, the original space hamster, to his sanctuary in this wild Spelljammer quest full of chaos, heart, and weaponized moon toads. https://startplaying.games/adventure/cmdyjkj2k00klkz04v6oq3g02

Give me a shout if you have any questions. :)
