1. D&D at it's heart is a game of "what would you do if...?" You play by joining a group and creating a character/ avatar. Then a Game Master gives you scenarios that your avatar would encounter, and asks you what your character would do. Then you play it out, using dice to handle the probabilities of success at attempted actions. Those are the most basic mechanics.
2. In D&D you create the aforementioned Character/ avatar using an agreed upon set of parameters. YOU then decide what that character's profession, history, personality, desires and goals would be. Then you Playact all of that out with others who are doing the same thing.
3. All of the various Players/ Characters form a team and go on adventures together.
4. As a New In Person Player you can look for ads on D&D Beyond for In Person games in your area and check out local Facebook groups, or go to any game store in your town and look for a bulletin board or ask the folks at the counter how to find local games.
5. As a new Online Player you will look for online game ads on D&D Beyond or other sites that are at the time/day that you can play, that sound interesting to you, that are the genre you want to play (Medieval fantasy, Sci-Fi space, Horror, etc) and that are willing to let brand new Players join. Those ads will usually state the requirements. Pay attention to whether or not they are Free games or Paid ones.
Some people will tell you that you should watch YOUTUBE D&D shows. They can be fun, but they are not necessarily 'real' D&D, games. as most DMs and Players are professional actors
I wish you the best of luck.
