Casual game with mixed combat and opportunity for RP.
Looking for players to test out a new world as I try my hand as a DM. This will be a classic D&D adventure in a custom world following official rules and mechanics. The atmosphere will be laid back as I familiarize myself with the VTT, but we will try to stay focused and moving along. Characters will be starting at level 1 and the campaign will last for 4-5 sessions with the option to extend if everyone is having fun. The intent is for this to eventually turn into a long-term persistent world with the opportunity to grow characters from level 1-20. This first session will allow me to work out the kinks from a tech perspective, so it is great opportunity for new players to learn along side. That said, players of all experience levels are welcome. I expect to run weekly sessions Sundays at 7pm EST using the D*D Beyond VTT and Discord. I anticipate each session finishing up by 10pm although I'm sure some sessions could finish a little early or late as I grow as a DM. This will be an adult game, although I don't anticipate any intentionally crude, graphic or distasteful scenarios.
Interested players should post a short description of their experience and the type of character they would like to play. I will reach out to players and hope to start the game in 2-3 weeks depending on how fast we can form a good party. Once party members are selected I will have an individual session with each player to help with character creation and confirm backstories via discord.
The game will be set in the world of Oros as described below:
This is the First Record of Oros, a brief distillation of the geography, politics, and peoples of the realm.
I. The Great Landscape
The world exists upon a singular, vast continent, bounded on three sides by the Odyssey Range—an immense, continuous U-shaped mountain barrier. To the south lies the Azurean Sea, the only gateway to the distant horizon.
At the center of the northern range, a great spur of stone known as The Warden’s Finger reaches south into the heart of the realm. At its base lies Lake Verity, the source of the Silverflow River. This river, named for the natural silver deposits washed down from the Finger, bisects the land and serves as the lifeblood of human civilization before emptying into a wide, swampy estuary at the southern coast.
II. The Three Seats of Man
The human race is the dominant force of the current age, centered around three distinct city-states:
Oros-Ghal (The Central Spire): The largest metropolis in the known world, built at the base of the Warden’s Finger. It is a city of order, wealth, and rapid growth, fueled by the free-flowing silver of the river and trade with the mountain dwarves. While clean and well-governed, it is a hive of bureaucracy, competing merchant guilds, and a powerful Wizards' Circle.
Port Aethel (The Western Jewel): Born from a fishing village, the now prosperous coastal city is the center of maritime culture and magical research. It enjoys a temperate climate and a relaxed pace of life. Though its military is modest, it is the primary destination for the best thaumaturges and alchemists who seek wisdom away from the noise of the capital.
Bastion’s Reach (The Naval Fortress): Isolated in the southeast by the impassable Fey-Fens (a vast, alligator-infested swamp), this city is a naval powerhouse. All trade to Bastion’s Reach must go by sea or up the Silverflow. This reliance on water has birthed a gritty culture of sailors, a massive Navy, and the most formidable Thieves’ Guild in the land.
III. The Elder Races & The Hidden War
While humans hold the plains and coasts, the elder races occupy the literal and metaphorical edges of the world.
The Dwarven Holds:
Iron-Deep (Mountain Dwarves): Keepers of the northern peaks, masters of silver and steel.
Gold-Hollow (Hill Dwarves): Wealthy miners of gems and gold in the west.
Gloom-Forge (Duergar): The "Gray Dwarves" of the eastern mountains. A seedy and dangerous race that trades in the black markets of Bastion’s Reach.
The Elven Spires: Both dwell within the northeastern Verdant Wilds. They are isolated, producing exquisite art and magic, and trade with humans for reasons only known the themselves.
Aethelgard (High Elves) : Magical and egotistical. The high elves create the highest quality metalwork and magical enchantments. They are powerful and unforgiving.
Silvanus (Wood Elves): The wood elves are free spirits and seek ultimate harmony with nature. They are the greatest archers and hunters of Oros. They defend their forests above all else.
The Dark Elves (Drow): Thought to be legend by most humans, the Drow dwell in the deepest and darkest tunnels of the Odyssey Range. They are the mortal enemies of the surface elves, conducting rare and terrifying raids from hidden tunnels.
IV. The Middle Ground: Gnomes & Halflings
Two races serve as the mechanical and economic glue of the Western Reach. The charm, charisma, and general lack of threat make them the premier merchant class of Oros. Their agents can be found throughout all the major trade centers
The Iron Hills (Gnomish Markets): Situated between Gold-Hollow and Port Aethel, this diverse "city" is a sprawling market and alchemical hub. Here, Gnomes, Dwarves, and Humans live in a bustling, prosperous mix, moving high-quality dwarven goods to the coast for a tidy profit.
The Green Thresh (Halfling Domain): A vast territory at the master fork of the Western roads. The Halflings have no leader per se, but their control of the crossroads and their massive trading centers make them essential to all who travel the Gilded Path.
V. The Frontier
The peace of the Reach is maintained by steel and distance, and coveted for the great herds of the prized giant elk and other large game that roam the plateaus
The High Veldt: A massive mountain plateau in the west, home to two human sects: the lithe, master-archer Horse-Lords, and the giant-blooded, tireless Veldt Barbarians. They skirmish over herd rights, leaving them vulnerable to orc and goblin raids.
The Red Belts: The Northern Wastes (Orc Hordes) and the Jagged Foothills (Goblins and Bugbears) are constant threats. They raid the trade routes, specifically the Nomad’s Ascent, necessitating the hire of mercenaries and adventurers.
The Giant Kingdoms: To the south of the elven woods, the Giants remain a silent mystery. They are indifferent to humans, but their Bugbear minions aggressively patrol their borders.
The Estuary Pests: The southern deltas of the Silverflow are infested with Kobold Clans on the west and Lizardfolk to the east who harass the merchant ships of Bastion's Reach.
VI. The Arteries of Trade
The Gilded Path: The only professionally patrolled highway, running from Oros-Ghal to Port Aethel. A 3-5 week journey guarded by the Silver Shields.
The Silverflow Passage: The naval route connecting the Azurean Sea to the heart of the continent. It is the only way to move mass goods from the isolated East to the thriving West.
This is the world as it stands. A realm of silver and shadow, held together by the thin lines of trade and the vigilance of those who walk the roads.
Hey there, Herth! Oros sounds like a fantastic bespoke realm, and I think it'd be an honor to be among the first to party up and explore it. I'm an experienced player, have access to Discord and most of the VTTs out there, and know my way around Maps here at D&D Beyond (I've DMed a few campaigns on it myself). In terms of the type of character I'd like to play, I'm pretty flexible. That might seem like a wishy-washy answer, but it really boils down to enjoying playing a character that meshes well within the party and the world, in whatever forms they take. Or, to put it another way, I probably wouldn't be looking to play a brooding loner type, or the bully-esque action forcer. Love me some support heroes and a party of fast friends, rather than a constant one-upsmanship contest. Also a big fan of letting the DM tell the story they intend to tell; I'm not likely to shank your questgiving NPC, burn down your starting tavern, or veer off the map...especially if it's one as detailed as Oros'.
I'm also in the Eastern US, and my Sunday evenings are largely free.
Hey! This seems like an interesting play, and would love to join. Regarding experience, I have only played 2 combats as an activity for school a while ago (with a little exploration and roleplay in between), but I have been exposed to D&D for a lot of my life. Recently I have been following campaigns from Legends of Avantris and Dimension 20, and have watched/read/played media that is based on D&D. As for the type of character I would want to play I always like playing supporting roles in games so I want to try that type of character. This looks really intriguing, and I'm excited to play together if I'm selected!
Hi, I haven't played d&d since version 3.5 so I'm very rusty. I might as well be completely new. I would like to be a rouge or sorcerer. idk if I would cause problems for the story, maybe a little but nothing to major. a picked pocket here, start a bar fight there. who knows
Seems interesting. I’m game. My experience is around 6 years, half of which being a DM for both homebrew and 5e books but I’m more of a player nowadays. Potential characters for me are usually Clerics of some sort of flavor since I always usually end up as designed healer most of the time but I’m always open to switching things around depending on the partys needs. Reach out to me on discord with the same name @valalecha. I don’t check here very often but I do try.
Hello! If you are still looking for players I would love to join! I have about 8 years of experience playing 3.5e in home-brew worlds. The games mostly consisted of roleplaying with occasional combat. I haven't played DnD in several years but have kept up on 5e's rules (basically by reading the player's handbooks). As for character ideas, I tend to gravitate towards Druids but I enjoy playing any class with magic. That said I am always happy to fill a role that the party needs and to explore roles beyond my comfort zone. If you have any further questions feel free to message me.
