Game: D&D 5e Group preferred: Online / Face-to-face / either Experience: New to 5e but played original AD&D back in the day Location/Timezone: Eagan Minnesota / Central time Availability: I work a rotating 12 hour shift so availability varies from week to week Preferred role: Player Game style: casual, some roleplay, hack'n'slash
I'm 50+ year old male, semi nerd. I like Scifi / Fantasy/ Post apocalypse. Play video games and board games. Other interests include outdoors, weight training, kayaking, woodworking. I also love miniature painting, more so than actual miniature gaming.
I'm looking to get back into the DnD world I remember so fondly, I can do either FTF or online. I have FG license and materials, also DnD beyond. I am new to the online RPG world so might need a little bit of coaching depending on what tools are utilized.
Any help finding a local group with a flexible schedule would be awesome.
We have a group of over a dozen folks in the Twin Cities that play 5e about once or twice a month. Our game is a West Marches style game, where there's no set campaign or even DM. It's a style of play conducive to people with busy lives who want to play when they can as opposed to a regular weekly scheduled game. Essentially, it's the pick-up basketball version of D&D. We always have room for 1 more. Let me know if this is something you might be interested in.
We got (stole) the idea after seeing this video last year.
Sounds interesting. Do you guys do FTF or online? What tools do you use? How do you coordinate a game session?
My initial thoughts were to find a group that was just starting a campaign/adventure, as I wanted to start at level 1 and progress a new character to help learn the new system. What is the level range in your group? I was also hoping to find a party that is fairly consistent group of characters, but the West March style sounds like it could be fun, with characters mixing into different parties and still sharing their experiences with the whole group. I am leery of jumping into a story line and not having any idea of back story or history that all the other players/characters have. Do you guys have a way of communicating between the different parties and their adventures so that all the players can review sessions that happened without them?
Are there other noobs, as I wouldn't want to be a hindrance to the group? My wife also might be interested, but she has absolutely no RPG experience.
Our group plays face to face. The games rotate location depending on who can get permission from their spouse, but typical spots include St. Paul, Eagan and St. Louis Park.
Our group is made up of some players who can trace their lineage to first game of D&D played on the Mayflower and some players whose first game of any rpg was a month ago. We started playing this style of game around the New Year, so some characters have hit 7th or 8th level and we still have some players at 2 or 3. It sounds weird, but all new characters start at level 1 and we have found no real issues in a game with disparities in level. We think it actually helps new players the most as they aren't overwhelmed by all the options that come with higher level play. New players are absolutely not a hindrance and are more than welcome.
As to communicating, players are encouraged to do a write-up after each adventure that sums up what happened. It allows all the players to see what's going on in the different sessions and also gives different DM's adventure hooks to tap into later.
I reached out to some of the other players in our game and the only thing they asked was that you not turn out to be a serial killer as that would be "disappointing". Apparently we set a pretty low bar.
If you'd like, I'll send you a PM with my email and we can connect offline. There's talk of a game this Friday or Saturday night. If you're interested...
Sounds like you might be just what I am looking for, The flexibility of this style game seems like it would be perfect for my schedule. I would love to meet up and see how things work out. Unfortunately I work this weekend so I would be unavailable. PM me and we can figure out how to get together. thanks, and I promise not to Kill disappoint anyone :) PM sent to you with contact info
I also have plenty of room to host a game at my house sometime.
