I am looking to run a Lost Mine of Phandelver game intended for new players only. The game will run weekly on Saturday (Sunday if you're in Australia) and be based in a homebrew world we build. I have not been a DM or played D&D before, so this will be an opportunity for all of us to learn and enjoy the game together. We will be using Roll20 for encounters, and may also use D&D Beyond for campaign management. If we all have fun, we might continue on to another adventure afterward completing LMoP.
To make sure that we're all on the same page and everyone can enjoy themselves, I thought it would be a good idea to introduce myself and set out what I'd like to get out of this game and the kinds of players I'd like to play with. Please read this before asking to join the game!
About Me
I'm a 28 year old Australian nerd, lawyer and (when I can find the time) gamer, and this will be my first time playing D&D or DMing a game. I've spent a little time playing other RPGs in the past, and enjoyed myself. Like some of you, I was introduced to D&D by Critical Role and other streamed/podcasted games. I find the creative freedom that comes with being a DM very appealing (and a little daunting!), so I've decided to start this game and give it a try.
The Game
We will be playing the Lost Mine of Phandelver (LMoP), which is the adventure included in the D&D 5e starter kit. The game will be played weekly. I own the relevant books on D&D Beyond and in paper. You don't have to own any of the books, but it would be helpful and convenient if you had a copy of the Player's Handbook. If we all enjoy ourselves and want to keep going, I might continue to run another adventure after LMoP.
I will be making some minor changes to the LMoP setting. In particular, the campaign will take place in our own homebrew world that we build together as we play, not in the Forgotten Realms. Before our first session, I'd like to spend some time with each of the players creating your character and backstory. Homebrew items/classes/etc will generally not be allowed, so that players can generally use the Player's Handbook as a reliable reference.
Player applications will be open for one week. Over the following week, I'd like to have one on one sessions with each of the players to set up backstories. If everything goes according to plan, our first session will be in two weeks' time.
Some rules and expectations
I would really like this game to be an enjoyable experience for everyone, and see it as a chance to make new friends doing something fun. To avoid unnecessary conflicts and unpleasantness, I've decided to set out some basic expectations and rules. If any of the rules of expectations below are a problem for you, this is not the game for you.
Be respectful, courteous and understanding. This is a game for new players, run by a new DM. Different people will have different personalities and abilities. Some might not be supremely confident, masterful roleplayers, rules experts, make choices you agree with, or do things you like. If you are not okay with that, you do not belong in this game. Please remember that this is a game, and our goal is for everyone to have fun.
Be consistent. It's important to me that we aren't constantly losing players and adding new ones. The game will be played weekly, and each session will run for several hours. Losing one or two party members in a week could mean we have to cancel the session and disrupts the game for everyone. If you don't think you can commit the necessary time consistently, this is not the game for you.
Play in character and keep meta-gaming to a minimum. "Meta gaming" is essentially when players talk about the game, or things they want to do in the game, while out of character, or using information they got out of character. I think a little bit of metagaming is to be expected from new players who aren't familiar with the rules, but I'd like to keep it to a minimum. Whenever possible, when talking about in-game events, interactions should be in-character.
Sex etc. will cut to black. I'm not going to be puritanical and stop your character doing their thing if that's what you want, but to avoid what I imagine would be spectacular awkwardness, any sex scenes will cut to black (i.e. will not be roleplayed out). Sexual violence (i.e. **** etc) is strictly not allowed. I am spelling this out because I have heard some horror stories from other games that I'd like to avoid.
DM's call is final. I encourage questions and discussion about the rules and the game, since we are all new and will be learning together. It is entirely possible (and even likely) that I will make mistakes, and if you spot one, feel free to raise it. However, to keep the game running smoothly, once I make a call it is final. No arguing or brooding, please.
Have fun! That's what we're here for!
If you're a new player who would like to join, head over to the campaign's Roll20 page and post in the player applications thread!
There are already 24 applications on Roll20 so in a hopes to stand out a bit thought I would also post my application here!
Good day all, The Name is Keill (Keill Storm Gray for the more formally inclined, that require ones full name), My friends have been known to affectionately call me Kill (or mockingly Kelly) but my parents stand by the fact that my name is indeed pronounced Kyle (despite only like 5 people ever getting that on their own without my interjection).
Any Super Nerds out there that might recognize the Origins in my Name will realize My parents where huge Fiction Readers, A love they past on to me and which I morphed into a Fantasy addiction. I am 26 years old (but if it comes up in conversation again expect me to get it wrong as I constantly forget how old I am) And I live in Cape Town, South Africa (born and bred). I studied a Bsc Zoology at University so Naturally I work as a Store manager/Surf Instructor at a Local store (because as a lecturer pointed out early on in my degree a Bsc stands for Behind the Shop Counter as that's where the degree always ends up). No need to be intimidated by my educational pedigree though as I can assure you I am no intellectual giant - A life of being lost in my own fantasy world has left me rather absent minded with a predilection of not having any clue what is happening in the world as a whole -> which meant I did a rather convincing job of playing a Mad/autistic Teifling Bard in my first Campaign (That was on a quest to find a song that could cure his madness and to whom the dm naturally gifted a cursed flute at the first chance he got!).
To date I have been in 2 separate D&D 5e campaigns (home brews) in which I played a Teifling bard (above mentioned) and an Oath of Conquest Aasimar Paladin - Totally in about a year of me being involved in the D&D scene but the sessions started off weekly, then become every second week, then every month, every 2 months to never (much to my chagrin) so in total probably dont have all that much actual play time but understand the basics of D&D 5e.
Would like to play a Wild Magic Sorcerer but I prefer building a character to fit in with the party composition and campaign theme so can easily go any which way and given Im rather late to the application process think that will be for the better. I love making new characters and am rather adept at quickly coming up with new fully fleshed characters in a short time. Im also wanting at some point to make the switch to Dm'ing so trust me I will be very understanding of a new DM.
