I was scrolling through YouTube one day and stumbled across Critical Role. I love the show, and thought it might be fun to try it out myself. I’ve never played a game of D&D before, but I have rp’d before. Fair warning for anyone it may bother, I swear and joke a lot and my jokes can be pretty offensive. I also play hockey, so scheduling conflicts may occur throughout the winter. If you’re still interested, my Discord is Yikes#9038.
Hockey fan from Florida here. Go Bolts! Also a Jets and Devils fan.
I see a Dwarf fighter or Barbarian in your future. Perhaps a half orc that just wants to smash face and be vulgar. D&D is just about anything you can dream up if your DM allows it.
Do you read high fantasy? Do you have a kindle or other e reader? If so, try to get hold of a 5e players handbook and take a look through that. A hardcover version can be picked up pretty cheap and could be a good read if you're a traveling player. Maybe go on youtube and watch some real games outside the scope of Critical Role. I would say Critical Role is probably 80% RP with house rules and 20% combat / entertainment.
I'm more a story driven RP casual myself. There are games for us out there but a foundation in the rules could help some. You could also contact your local comic book store and ask them if they are running any current D&D campaigns for new players. It may not be as glorious as Critical Role but it could be a lot of fun. Have you tried making a character sheet on this website?
I might be able to talk you through a few things. If I have time I'll try contacting you on Discord.
Hey! Bruins fan here. Sharks too, oddly enough. Thanks man. I have been messing around with the character sheets on here, and I bought a few of the books yesterday. I’ve been reading and watching as much stuff as I can, it’s just a little overwhelming. I appreciate the help and advice and I’ll keep looking for a campaign to hop into.
If you have some books and vids you're pretty much on your way. Something to keep in mind. Some DM's use fantasy grounds or Roll20 to host their games. Fantasy grounds offers a bit more and Roll20 is a bit easier I think for newer players. Also check out some vids on those if you haven't already. I'm sure you're learning how time consuming all this is. Kinda like earning credits in college. It's all worth it though if you can land a decent group or long campaign with a solid DM.
Yeah, I definitely wasn’t expecting this much stuff. I had seen some stuff about Roll20 on here but I hadn’t heard of Fantasy Grounds. I’ll have to check them out. Thanks for all your help, I think I have a pretty good foundation based on what you’ve pointed me towards. Cheers!
