Game: D&D 5e Group type: Online Experience: a few years Location/Timezone: EST Schedule: Saturday night, 6pm (EST) to about 10pm. this is the most consistent day I have off. Roles sought: 2-3 players Edit: (I should mention I already have 2 players) Game style: roleplaying and action heavy, heroic people doing heroic things.
Hi, welcome to my tedtalk. the platform I'll be using is Fantasy Grounds, no need to worry about buying any of the source books on there as I have the ultimate subscription and all the books like Xanathar's and what not. as for myself, Ive been a DM for a little under 2 years and would like to start again, and as I haven't been finding players in my area, I've made the shift to online play. I haven't run a game yet with Fantasy Grounds, so if you haven't played with it, this will be a learning experience for everyone.
as for the campaign itself, Queue Nox Arcana's Defenders of the realm.
Chromatic dragons are on the rise, kingdoms have fallen time and again as a horde of dragons and their allies. refugees that have managed to make it this far are heading for the sword coast where legend has it that there is a powerful and ancient gold dragon, Avalon. Sire of the golden age, it is said that the dragon that resides atop this mystical peak will sire in a new age. for as long as anyone can remember, the dwarves and elves speak of Avalon and The Dragon Riders protecting the innocent. however, The Dragon Riders haven't been seen in nearly a decade now and the only metallic dragon anyone has seen is Avalon, and those are just rumors.
you are one of the many refugees on your way to the sword coast. you've seen the brutality of the white wyrms, the cruelty of the skull dragons, the trickery and deceit of the greens, the majesty of the blues, and the might of the reds. even you're starting to doubt that with Avalon's help this unending horde of dragons will be stopped. but there is hope, Bahamut still answers prayers, even if his children are nowhere to be found.
More troubling news still, Burned out villages have been found. While unfortunately not an uncommon sight with red dragons, the strangest details are that the villages haven't been looted, and there were neither survivors of bodies...
Hope is on the horizon, you're but a few days march to a port city, hopefully you can catch a ship to Baldur's gate or perhaps Waterdeep where Steel Dragons have been rumored to live.
Now, as a slight P.S. there are a few character outlines I'd like to offer to any interested players who would like to join the game, starting with the most rigid as there are quite a few people involved with this character and LORE.
now, the first session starts in a week and I intend to play through everyone's backstory in more detail than I have written below. campaign starts at lv 2 but admittedly should be like lv 5 based on some backstory stuff. I look forward to hearing from any potential players out there!
(insert clever name here) Drathok, human Dragon Sorcerer (blue or silver) Noble that takes the elemental adept feat at lv 1 for the other color they didn't pick. yeah, its basically a premade with plot hooks built in. first name and sex are up to the player in question. the backstory goes a little something like this...
You are the Heir to the famed Quavia Drathok, the heroine who is at this point, most famed for having founded the Dragon Riders as the chosen of Silvana, Bahamut's most faithful of Archangels. however, your mother has been gone since you were a child, leaving you in the care of two loving guardians, an elven couple. raised by them, its not long before you're taken to Silverymoon to meet Lady Alustriel who personally sees to most of your magical teaching. one day, nearly twenty years or so old, you're on one of your Mother's vast estates, part of your inheritance as you are her singular heir, you discover a book in her study that wasn't a book, it was a lever. it opened a passage down into a secret room you'd never seen before. stepping down the steps into the darkness, torches of blue and silver flame lit your way as they flared to life. there you found a journal on a pedestal, and just behind it, a glimmering white stone. no... not a stone, an egg... it was on some sort of pillow that held it in place. the pillow was warm to the touch, and in Draconic, it read, "None above, none below, we bring down the tyrants and bring up the people. we are fools one and all, with valor and strength of arm and heart. Yet we are nothing without our friends and steeds." on the pedestal itself, it reads, "Long have I waited, long will I continue to wait, in legend I dwell, in the hearts of righteous and the corrupt, Fear I inspire." as you lifted the egg, there was a commotion and yelling upstairs...
Next up, the Human Paladin (oath of the dragon rider, made by yours truly (https://homebrewery.naturalcrit.com/share/HkBGi5Dqs4)) while the background is a lot more open to more paths, LORE says its just humans that are allowed to be dragon riders because they are the only ones that the dragons would allow to ride them.
As a child, you grew up with the legends of the Dragon Riders always never far from thought. as a child it was easy to play the part of the knight with sticks or wooden swords, but you did something special. one saw the spark in you, and your family was offered a choice to let you join the order. of course you went, it was a dream come true, how could you not? the flight there on dragon back was exhilarating and terrifying. the world below as you flew toward the city in the sky. at first, it was easy to get lost in the study, the training, the magic, the dragons, when you were ready to graduate, a young dragon would select their rider and as time passed, that day came ever closer. Proud and excited, it wasn't difficult to make friends, and the closest of these was a girl your age named Sophia. she excelled right along side you and the two of you were inseparable. finally, the day had arrived, the entire class was making their oath as one. most of the Dragon oath might never have a dragon partner, but you were sure that at the very least, Sophia and yourself would be riding a dragon, just like the stories, the legends. Then... a strange violet star flickered to life. a shooting star..?
And last but not least, an elf.
that's it, please leave a message if you're interested and- what? you've read this far and you want more??? okay okay, while this one is very loose in every regard, the backstory has a lot to do with age, the only other restriction being the age of the elf is around 120 years or so.
Dreams, Elves in their meditation like state rarely had them, and the ones they did have, they were reliving moments of their past lives. your past life, a sun elf named... Rohan. how many times had that woman said it? how many times had you seen that woman? had Rohan seen that woman? "Quavia!" you'd- he'd call back. he was young in some of the memories, and older in others... and she was there, she was always there. she was a human, but she was there..? one of the later memories, looking into a mirror and seeing the crescents under his eyes that marked him as aged and ready to pass. he was an old elf, and he went to see her again. she was in a clearing in the light of the full moon, and she was... crying... into her journal.. she was still there, and when she saw the tell tale marks under your- his eyes... she knew what was coming. "not you too..." she wept. you held her, and you knew you had to find this woman. you knew you had to see this Quavia Drathok, but as you grew out of your first century of life, the visions of your past life became more and more rare and this woman you knew so well in your memory was a recluse now. one night, you thought you had found her. but as you made your way to her estate, the sound of running and something- no, someone crashed into you. a... dark elf with lavender eyes. he was carrying two young children, no older than three years old, they were terrified, a young boy burying his face in the elf's chest, and the other hidden in his forest green cloak...
heyo! I'm happy to hear that you'd like to play and actually find one of my outlines interesting. I'd love to talk it out more when you have the chance, as for myself I'll be heading out shortly for an hour or so.
I would love to be apart of this game it sounds wonderful! I have not played on Fantasy grounds but I am willing to learn! I got a lot of ideas in terms of characters for this awesome world!

Oh and curious, are we making our own character/backstory or taking one that you have above? If that is the case, I am highly interested in the Sorcerer! But I also have one or two characters that would work as well!
as for your question, Either or, but seeing as its already set up and it would be silly, to me at least, for the heir of the Drathok blood to not be a player character, I'd have to retcon it out or something or just hold it in reserve as another potential PC.
I recall something about writing a potential Folk hero backstory on Reddit that never got used. I'd happily try to meet you half way on another backstory idea though! and a slight note, I as much as I love sorcerers, I think they needed a little power boost and sooooo.... https://terminallynerdy.com/giving-the-sorcerer-some-love-with-bloodline-bonus-spells when I saw this, I adored the idea of giving the sorcerer a bonus spell list and I intend to always implement this.
I'm very interested! Looks like everyone is vying for the sorcerer. If there is a name-in-a-hat draw to be had for the sorcerer, I would like to have a chance. If not, I would like to be the paladin. By the way, the elf plot reminds me of Robert Jordan's books
Robert Jordan? "wheel of time, epic fantasy" huh... might want to swing in for a read at some point, but I'm glad to hear you're interested! honestly, I thought the Sorcerer would be the least popular as its technically the most restrictive, if quite involved in the plot. I thought people were going to look at this and be all, "Rail road!" and say that I should write a book, but I recall, one of my players wanted to take a level in fey pact warlock. I thought, "hey, you know what'd be cool? lets have this player actually go into the feywild and they've been in there 6 months but for the rest of the party, its been one night." SO I LET THE WIZARD ROLL PERCEPTION LIKE A DINGUS, wakes up, follows the rogue into the feywild but doesn't wake the last member of the party. needless to say, it was so off the rails in the feywild that for the next month I was improvising everything. like, if I was a railroad GM that wouldn't have happened and it ended up being one of the most memorable arcs of the last campaign.
First, sorcerer. But it looks like it is probably taken. So, paladin.
Robert Jordan's books are a staple in the high fantasy genre (next to Tolkien), but most people don't bother reading because he takes like 2 pages to describe a tree.

I would like to play the elf. Chaotic good rogue assassin or lawful open hand monk.
I have not played before, but have dmed.

the sorcerer or the paladin? they're both supposed to be humans.
