Hi all, I've never played dnd before but always wanted to, I just created my bard, Hoyhoy, modeled after an old EverQuest char of mine. Any body with some experience here could help me?
My boy's story:
Hoyhoy hails from a large port city, his parents are unknown. As a baby he was dropped off at an orphanage to be raised by Grelda, who was human, but many folk thought there to be some orc in there, judging by here strict "ruthlessness".
Hoy grew up thin and rangy, malnurished.
At the age of seven he was sent to work at the quarry hauling water and supplies for the workers. They were all rather mean and demeaning to little Hoyhoy. This was a town of men, and the dirty little elf boy was a prime target for some ragging. Often spit on and thrashed when something was amiss.
After a few years of this, around the age nine or so, Hoy learned that, when he wasn't yelled at to keep quiet, that he could get by on a whistle. Hoy's delighting playful whistle, while quiet and forgettable, seemed to change the attitudes of those around him. Soon workers stopped being so aggressive and hurtful, even saying things like "hey Elroy's here, you got the water little buddy?"
Hoy's whistle did nothing to effect Grelda. Who at every chance would smack Hoyhoy on the back of the head and tell him to stop that this instance. His patience for the orphanage was growing very thin. He yearned to be free.
So one night, Hoyhoy stayed up until everyone was asleep, crept out of bed and began to whistle a soft melodic tune of drearyness. The children we're all dead asleep and all hoy had to do was get past Grelda. She was normally a very light sleeper , awake at moments notice of misbehavior among the orphans. That night though, she had a few drinks with some of the workers from the quarry and Hoyhoy was able to carry her slumber with his tune.
Hoy stopped for a moment at Grelda's bedside and pondered grabbing her strait razor and cutting her throat. His whistle became more aggressive and she started to react in her sleep. Maybe she was dreaming of the same thing. After a long moment hoy decided that could make things worse for the other kids and resolved to just grabbing her coin purse and a Sapphire ring on a chain which she usually wore that was now on here bedside table.
Now Hoyhoy, twelve years old, was free, yet reluctant to find somewhere to go. He wandered to the far edge of town where no one was likely to recognize him. In the dead of night, hoy happened upon a man in dirty scraps of cloth tending a small fire. Ranjer, Ray, was friendly, enjoyed hoy's story of escape, but was very weary and relented he wouldn't sleep with out a drink. Hoyhoy whistled a relaxing tune and Ray had the best rest he's had in years.
Ranjer was a beggar and the next day, took Hoyhoy to his best spots. By evening time Ray was estatic, they made out well. Hoyhoys whisting seemed to make townsfolk more generous. Hoyhoy still hated it, begging, he wanted to earn his keep. "We made out pretty good boy" said Ranjer, "we're eating good tonight!"
So Ray took Hoyhoy to his favorite spot, Hagor's Hideout, upon entering:
"Get the hell out beggar!"
Hagor relented from behind the bar. Hagor a tall sturdy man in an apron with a short white beard and big arms that matched his big gut.
"Hey I got money" replied Ranjer
"I don't want ya stinkin' money" shouted Hagor, brandishing a large butchers knife.
"What about this" said Hoyhoy producing his stolen coinpurse, which amounted to more than the begging bounty, surprising both men.
Stunned Hagor looked over Hoyhoy, noticing the sapphire ring on a chain around his neck.
"Come with me" he grabbed house by the arm and dragged him to the back room, Ray started ordering pints. The ring had once belonged to Hagor, who once belonged to Grelda. They were once lovers due to be wed. The ring though, came from someone else, a secret love of Hagor, who was scared out of town when Grelda discovered her.
Hoyhoy and Hagor bonded over their disgust for Grelda. Soon Hoyhoy was living in a small town in room above the tavern working as a bar back for room and board. Eventually preforming for the patrons carjoling them to spend more. This went on for years, until the patrons got wise to the magical antics going on, causing them to willfully hand over their earnings. Word eventually got around to Grelda, of a singing half elf altering those around him with song, at Hagor's no less. Of course.....Hagor!
Grelda set out with a mob of old stern working men with pick axes, and a few hired mercenaries. They stormed Hagor's amid Hoyhoy's performance, Grelda commanding:
"You men take the boy, the old man is mine!"
Being charged at, Hoyhoy managed to let out an ear piercing shriek, stunning every one in the room, and slipped away. Hagor was cornered in his room, Grelda was as furious as furious gets. With her stilletto dagger she lifted Hagor's hand, eyeing the Sapphire ring on his little finger. "You still love her, don't you....."
From the window, Hoyhoy watched his only mentor and father figure get cut down like a beast. Horrified, he fled into the night. After days of wandering down the road, hey meet up with a traveling merchant party and pursuaded them to take him to the next town..............
