I just signed up on D&DBeyond, and I downloaded and signed up for Discord (with the same username).
My server on Discord is "BoinsterPsi's server" .
I have intermediate experience playing AD&D in person. I have used video chat in Zoom and Facebook Messenger.

The quick answer is to spend a lot of time scouring and watching for LFP posts to show up on here and jump on the slots quickly, as they can fill up fast. Otherwise, it can be difficult since DMs are in short supply in ratio to players. I've been looking for months, but then I also have a wacky schedule so if you're going for afternoon EST then that shouldn't take long.
A google search for D&D Discord servers can get you straight to some communities. The "jump on a game fast" and DM to player ratio is about the same, but at least there's live chat going on so it can be a little easier to get to know people and then get into a game from there. Some servers have scheduled events and stuff to get people rolling.
Most of the D&D games outside of theatre of mind aren't played through Beyond itself, as there's no virtual tabletop here. Beyond is more of for character management and depository for digital manuals... Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds are good VTTs, but require separate subscriptions (mostly just for the GM). Some use Beyond in tandem with those. Personally, I prefer Tabletop Simulator as it's just a one-shot $20 purchase for software and you don't need to deal with subscriptions, but you can't simply purchase modules on TTS and have them already set up. You pretty much have to mod it. Got lots of time but little money? Go D&DBeyond w/TTS and Disco. Got money but little time? Go D&DBeyond and Disco with Roll20 or FG. Perfectly happy with theatre of mind? Just Beyond and Discord should do it.
Of course, those are just the most common avenues. Some do the same combos as above but swap out Disco with Skype or Zoom or Google Hangouts or whatever. One of the campaigns I'm currently running is on Disco while using Gimp as a VTT. /shrug
Anyway. Dunno if that helps at all or if I totally misunderstood the question. Either way, good game hunting to ya!
Your understanding appears correct. Probably via Zoom for me. I've used the other two, but not enough to matter.
Are YOU interested in joining a game together? With me as a player and probably you? A lot would depend on gaming style and personality mix, but it's worth exploring.
My niece told me she was on this site. She might be able to help in some ways, but I doubt it.
I can't afford any of it right now. I might have to build my own website for it. :) Hahaha.

Haven't tried Zoom yet. I suppose I should have it downloaded already since I've been passively lfg. Lol. My only concern would be that I'm in the boonies with satellite internet. Incoming looks fine but up-speed is terrible so I'd have to see if it doesn't robot out for everyone else. Still, nothing ventured and all that.
I'd definitely be down for joining a game. Been at the "research" stage of 5e for a while while dming the pbp one for some family and friends (read: guinea pigs), but haven't really had a chance to be a player so it'd be great to get the derp out of my mechanics. Plus I bought these dead trees irl and unlocked a few Beyond things on here, so now I'm ready to fire up that grung archer! Haha
