I played the game a fair amount when I was a kid (12-14), about 35 years ago :-) Came back to the game a couple of years ago because my nieces had interest but we never really played it properly.
A couple of months ago I started it back up with a couple of family members and I am currently DMing them in some homebrew content I have created (I’m also something of a writer).
I joined a group as a player about a month back (Discord +) because I wanted to be able to gain some experience learning how to play properly and re-familiarizing myself with the game, as a player. I basically consider myself someone who understands the general concepts of D&D but really isn’t that great (or even highly interested) in the nuts & bolts of the rules. I’m probably more into character development, story and interacting with my fellow players than I am getting bogged down in the minutia of the rules. I know there are a lot of different ways to play this game and I think the DM I was with (who was very good) is just very strict with the rules and perhaps not as forgiving towards an inexperienced player as I think I need right now.
So anyway, I’m a talkative, intelligent, personable guy who enjoys socializing. I’m still learning the nuts & bolts of the rules of the game so I should be considered very inexperienced in that area. But I’m very familiar and comfortable with all the other stuff (character development, role-playing, etc.).
I’m looking for a group I can join that is friendly to new players and probably weighted a little more towards story, character development and interactions, although I certainly want there to be combat, etc. :-) It is D&D after all.
I should emphasize that I have no problem learning the rules as I go, I just don’t know them in great detail right now so maybe a DM who takes that into consideration and is a little more forgiving would be the best fit for me right now.
Thanks. And I’m open to all kinds of content (such as homebrew, or whatever).
I guess I’ll add that I’m not as much into the demonry, the other planes and interactions with (and the influence of) the gods as some players might be. I guess I prefer a world that’s kind of LOTR/GoT-y in that regard – like there is magic but it’s not all over the place and the influence of the gods (if any) seems removed and something that the players can’t really be 100% sure about. Having said that, I will play in almost any D&D environment. Just listing my preferences.
Thanks for reading my lengthy post :-) And I look forward to your replies.
