Some may find "Oriental Adventures" offensive, but once we get past that label, there is a lot of useful and exciting material that represents a fantastical East Asian setting more thoughtfully than some might first assume. This is the world of noble samurai, gritty yakuza, elusive ninja, and transcendent Wu Jen spellcasters. The campaign will begin with the first Oriental Adventures module, "Swords of the Daimyo" (OA1).
The campaign and its partner Discord channel are part of a larger study of RPGs with East Asian themes, which seek to determine how these games can be played in a way that is respectful to the cultures they are based on.
The DM is a long time AD&D player who teaches university courses on the history of the samurai.
AD&D 1st Edition Oriental Adventures
Online: Foundry via The Forge with voice on Discord
Experience: background in AD&D 1e or willingness to learn; knowledge of East Asia a plus
Time zone: US Central (GMT -6)
Schedule: Mondays 8:00-11:00 AM
Seeking: 3-4 mature players
Game style: I like to keep things moving. That does not mean that there will be a constant parade of monsters for you to kill: you will have some time to flesh out your characters as you play, but those discoveries will be made during gameplay not in long soliloquies or tedious shopping trips and especially not in inter-party conflicts. Characters should focus on collaborating instead of individual grandstanding. Players who want to play intoxicated homebrew-murder-hobo half-things who ride dragons should not apply.
DM me with the following information:
A character idea that follows the Oriental Adventures rules (1e)
Your background in AD&D 1e
The titles of a few novels that you found enjoyable, inspirational, or informative for your RPG playing.
