Game: D&D 5E, plus other game on an alternative weekly basis Group type: Online (Roll20) Experience: Not required, but some familiarity with playing RPGs would be a better fit for the group. Location/Timezone: Perth, GMT+8 Schedule: Monday, 7:00PM - 10:00PM Roles sought: Player Game style: Take the game seriously, but it's a game and we're here to enjoy ourselves. Elements of role-play are frequent and often extend beyond just playing your PC, and outstanding contributions are rewarded in-game. However, subtlety (and "wise" decision making) are not this party's strong suit... see example below.
I am inviting expressions of interest for one player to join a group that has been regularly playing online together for four and a half years. We have two members in Perth, two in Queensland (one currently on extended absence) and one in Japan.
Game night is Monday, from 7:00PM - about 10:00PM AWST (Perth timezone), playing D&D 5E roughly every second week and filling out the alternate week with whatever else is agreed - we've recently started Vampire the Masquerade, but Call of Cthulhu, Warhammer 40k, Coriolis, cyberpunk and some Middle Earth flavour have all either been on our schedule or likely will be, one day. We also occasionally play board games online, or even cooperative computer games if some players are unavailable for the session. In short: D&D 5E is the staple of our game schedule and likely will be for quite a while, but there's something being played almost every week.
The group was formed from LFP posts like this one but, as might be presumed from the length of time we've been gaming together, we've built a fabulous dynamic with strong bonds of friendship and the primary objective is having a good time playing games together. Accordingly, there is trepidation about bringing someone new onboard so, if you wish to express interest in joining, please understand that all members must unanimously accept you as a good fit - while I am usually the GM and will vet all candidates, I will not be the sole arbiter of the final decision.
Additionally, to be suitable, you must:
be reliable and able to make a commitment to be on time and available most every week. While we all have real life influences that occasionally interfere, recurring tardiness or failure to attend sessions will not be tolerated. Further, you must be in GMT+8 or similar (i.e. Australian) time zone; for those in different zones who believe their current lifestyle suits this scheduling, I regretfully advise I've been burned too many times by predecessors making that claim.
demonstrate a suitable degree of maturity. We are all 30+ (a couple of us 30+++) and, while there is no "age criteria", fitting comfortably into the group is the top priority. An old-school RPGer looking to revitalise their habit, or a ripened gamer seeking a regular online gathering with very long term prospects, will find like-minded players in this assembly, but we're looking for appropriate attitude, not age.
contribute to an enjoyable experience playing games together. While our new foray into Vampire the Masquerade has deliberately introduced darker themes into our storytelling, respect, collaboration and friendliness between players is utterly essential and any actions that create disharmony or are disruptive to the group will result in expulsion. It should go without saying that this includes, but is not limited to, harassment, bullying or other antisocial behaviour in any form, or anything else that any sensible adult should know the better of.
be able to communicate effectively and show some of attention to it. If spelling or basic grammar is too much trouble, forming a cohesive sentence is a struggle, or scattering emoticons and netspeak throughout your message is essential to conveying thoughts, it's unlikely your stylistic choices will appeal to us.
have passion and enthusiasm for creating and contributing to our stories. One of the first tasks for every player for every campaign or new game we play is developing a character that goes well beyond just the mechanical structures of the rulebook. It is likely (in fact, it's certain in the 5E game) that you will be assigned other tasks to bolster the game experience, such as improvising a NPC or even being assigned one to play in parallel with your PC over the course of multiple sessions, plus we maintain an online narrative log of our main campaigns for which it is expected (read as: compulsory) that all players contribute to as "homework".
accept the Golden Rule: that rules, articles of setting and/or any other matter pertaining to the game being run are what the GM says they are, regardless of what is written elsewhere. Questions, suggestions and discussion are welcomed, but argument is not. If that is likely to not sit well with you then I am not the GM you're looking for, and it similarly applies to any games being run by other members of our group.
Knowing the rules in advance is not essential - we're very happy to teach, although we'd expect some effort put towards learning them as we play, and anticipate that you at least know the rules related to your character choices and not rely on the GM to remind you or enforce them. No or limited experience with 5E, or even D&D entirely, is not a problem. but it's unlikely you'll be comfortable if you have no RPG experience whatsoever.
The 5E campaign mostly uses an adapted mix of published material. Specifics can be discussed privately, but know that character progression is slow; by design, we play lengthy campaigns, and XP is not used (levelling occurs at milestones in the campaign - i.e. when the DM says so). While there are multiple opportunities for varying approaches to challenges, this is a group who ended their first campaign as level 5 characters by striding brazenly and blindly into the the black dragon's cave, after being warned a couple of times and explicitly told by the NPC guide: "It's really a very, very bad idea for you all to brazenly and blindly walk into that cave, which is almost certainly a dragon's lair."
For better or worse (and more often the latter than not), this is not atypical behaviour of the party. If playing a character to be what the character is, and being able to enthusiastically retell the consequences later, good or bad, is your preference in play-style then you understand ours.
